OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of non-penetrating trabecular surgery (NPTS) with amniotic membrane implant in patients with juvenile glaucoma.
METHODS: NPTS with amniotic membrane implant was performed on 32 eyes of 26 patients with juvenile glaucoma aged between 12 approximately 28 years. Intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured pre- and post-operatively by CT-60 non-contact tonometer, intraocular irritations and the bleb appearances were recorded, and the anterior chamber angle of post-operation was observed by gonioscopy. Follow-up was (8.3 +/- 4.2) months after surgery.

Trabeculotomy is a well-documented procedure for reducing intraocular pressure in primary infantile glaucoma with cloudy corneas. However, the efficacy of the procedure is reduced in glaucoma associated with other ocular disorders. We report a child with lens-corneal adhesions in whom trabeculotomy produced a secondary cataract.

A case of congenital glaucoma in cutis marmorata teleangiectatica congenita (CMTC, van Lohuizen syndrome) is described. The cutaneous anomaly and heterochromia iridium were noticed at birth. Brown discoloration of one iris was due to iris anterior layer dysplasia, resulting in unilateral glaucoma. Epidemiology and etiopathogenesis of the infantile glaucoma are discussed. Presented is the particular symptomatology of: 1. glaucoma conditioned by isolated abnormalities of he Irido-corneal angle 2. glaucoma caused by an abnormal iride-corneal angle in the course of another developmental disturbances of the eye, 3. congenital glaucoma accompanying systemic diseases and 4. secondary glaucoma in children. Indications and methods of treatment of congenital glaucoma are also discussed with particular attention drawn to the results of surgical treatment.

Sixty-eight eyes presenting with congenital glaucoma and operated on by goniotomy, have been followed up for 1 to 10 years. Intra-ocular pressure was normalized in 91.18 p. cent of cases by one or more goniotomies with or without medical treatment. We have also analyzed the functional results of these operations.

We have studied among 192 patients affected by congenital glaucoma the long term efficacy of 4 interventions. Elliot's trophination, iridencleisis, goniotomy, trabeculotomy. Trabeculotomy gives the best results and is the most suitable intervention in congenital glaucoma.

Four patients developed choroidal detachment within 3 months after trabeculectomy, documented with b-scan ultrasonography (BUS) and ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM).
