A rare case of retropharyngeal abscess in association with tuberculosis of the upper cervical spine is presented. The disease was associated with tuberculosis of the sternum. The onset was insidious. Fever, neck pain, dysphagia and hoarseness of voice were the presenting features. Conservative treatment with anti-tuberculosis drugs resulted in good outcome. The case is discussed and pertinent literature is reviewed.

Contrary to widespread belief, abdominal tuberculosis is not rare, nor is it confined to the poor or patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis. The disease must be considered in the differential diagnosis of abdominal pain.

Aspiration cytology under CT-guidance was utilised as a diagnostic device in 112 lesions of vertebrae from January, 1985 till August, 1992. The age of the patients ranged from 6 years to 82 years. The materials were spread on glass slides, air-dried and stained by May-Grunwald and Giemsa method. In few cases part of the aspirated material was utilised for special stain and cell block preparation. Analysis of results showed metastatic tumours in 61 cases, Tuberculous lesions in 24 cases, Plasmacytoma in 6 cases, Giant cell lesion in 6 cases, Eosinophilic Granuloma in 3 cases, Chordoma in 3 case

Osteoid osteoma is a benign bone-forming tumour, seen more frequently in males than females, during the first three decades of their life. It accounts for 3% of all bone neoplasms and 10-12% of benign bone lesions. The spine is involved in approximately 10-20% of cases. A teenage boy presented with complaints of low back pain and spinal deformity for 2 years. He was previously treated for tuberculosis of that same segment empirically. A whole-body PET scan was taken, which revealed the presence of osteoid osteoma. The patient underwent complete resection of the osteoid osteoma from the L3-L4 f

BACKGROUND: Andersson lesion (AL) is an uncommon complication in ankylosing spondylitis (AS), which is characterized by nonneoplastic bone destruction and often appears as bone destruction and sclerosis in the vertebral body and/or the area involving the intervertebral disc. According to the literature, Andersson lesion commonly occur in the thoracic and lumbar spine and rarely in the cervical spine.
CASE SUMMARY: This case involved a 78-year-old man with a long history of AS who developed AL in the cervical spine (C5/6 and C6/7). One-stage anterior-posterior approach surgery was successfully

Extrapulmonary manifestations of tuberculosis (TB) are particularly frequent during childhood, and usually involve the lymph nodes and the skull. They are related to predisposing immunosuppression conditions. A patient affected by diabetes mellitus type 1 (DMT1) and congenital lamellar ichthyosis type 3 came at our attention with a 4-year history of recurrent parotitis and severe back pain and inferior limb hypomobility, which had lasted for 6 months. A diagnosis of chronic TB parotitis combined with Pott disease was performed after a suggestive spinal magnetic resonance imaging, and positive

We describe the challenges to treatment of leukemia in three cases of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected children with multiple infections and complications. Two of the three patients had acute myeloid leukemia and the other one acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Two of the patients were known with HIV infection; the third was diagnosed on admission. All patients received antiretroviral therapy with standard doses of lamivudine, stavudine and efavirenz or lopinavir/retonavir. All three were diagnosed with Mycobacterium tuberculosis on one or more occasions: pulmonary or miliary involvement

A male patient with HIV and past history of tuberculosis and suspected neurotoxoplasmosis was admitted to the hospital with vomiting and small nodules through all his body. Few of the nodules were found forming chains of enlarged lymphatic vessels, especially on lesions located on the limbs. Some of the nodules were ulcerated with a serosanguineous discharge. Collected samples from ulcerated and the nodular lesions showed the presence of Sporothrix schenckii in culture. Although all hemocultures were negative, a spinal fluid collected from this patient and cultures from the cutaneous lesions w

Tuberculosis (TB) of the spine, or Pott's disease, is a rarely encountered clinical disorder in the United States today. However, Pott's disease should be strongly suspected in a person who presents with a destructive lesion of the spine involving adjacent vertebrae or a retropharyngeal mass which extends across the midline. The most common presenting signs and symptoms are pain and spinal deformity. The PPD skin test is usually positive, but unlike TB of the larynx, the chest roentgenogram is almost always negative. Diagnosis may be confirmed by needle aspiration or incisional biopsy and cult

BACKGROUND: Severe kyphotic deformities carry high risk for neurological injuries as osteotomies are often required for correction. Surgeons often utilize a staged approach for dealing with these conditions starting with a period of halo traction to stretch tight soft tissues and partially correct the deformity, followed by surgery. Halo traction is a relatively safe procedure and complications are uncommon. We report a unique case of iatrogenic fracture of the cervical spine during gradual halo traction for deformity correction of a severe cervical kyphosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 80-year-old
