Comparison of imaging characteristics for mortality risk analysis between young and older acute aortic dissection patients.

BACKGROUND: There are differences between young and older patients diagnosed with acute aortic dissection. We aimed to explore the differences in echocardiographic and computed tomography angiography (CTA) characteristics between the young and the older patients diagnosed with acute aortic dissection. METHODS: The data from 1220 patients with aortic dissection were collected. They were divided into the young and the older groups with the age threshold set at 45 years old. The basic information and imaging data were collected and compared between the two groups. Univariate regression was used

Resolution of severe cardiomyopathy after catheter ablation of an anteroseptal accessory pathway: A case report.

In patients with non-sustained tachyarrhythmias, left ventricular (LV) systolic dysfunction is uncommon. The role of catheter ablation (CA) in asymptomatic patients with tachyarrhythmia remains unclear. We report a 20-year-old patient without sustained tachyarrhythmia with a left ventricular ejection fraction of 20% who underwent radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) of anteroseptal accessory pathway. She achieved normalization of left ventricular systolic function noted on echocardiography performed at 4 weeks post-ablation. Our case highlights significant improvement in LV systolic functio

Cerebral haemodynamics during arrhythmia in health, ischaemic heart disease and heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, and in a preclinical swine model.

Ventricular arrhythmias are associated with neurological impairment and could represent a source of cerebral hypoperfusion. In the present study, data from healthy individuals (n = 11), patients with ischaemic heart disease (IHD; ejection fraction >40%; n = 9) and patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF; EF = 31 (5)%, n = 11), as well as data from swine surgeries, where spontaneous ventricular arrhythmias were observed during cerebrovascular examination (transcranial Doppler ultrasound in humans and laser Doppler in swine) were analysed retrospectively to investigate

Echocardiography image quality of global longitudinal strain in cardio-oncology: a prospective real-world investigation.

BACKGROUND: Left-ventricular (LV) global longitudinal strain (GLS) has been reported to be a robust and sensitive marker of chemotherapy-induced cardiac damage. Image quality is paramount for accurate GLS measurements. In real-world cardio-oncology settings, the incidence of suboptimal echocardiography quality and its significance in clinical decision-making have not been well investigated. This prospective study examined the incidence and impact of suboptimal echocardiographic image quality on detecting subtle myocardial damage by chemotherapy. METHODS: Seventy-seven consecutive patients wit

Left ventricular function by strain in uncomplicated malaria: a prospective study from the Brazilian Amazon.

We hypothesized that adults with uncomplicated malaria have lower left ventricular contractile function compared to the general population and that this improves after antimalarial treatment. We examined uncomplicated malaria and the general population from the Western part of the Brazilian Amazon Basin. All persons underwent an echocardiographic examination and peripheral blood smears. Left ventricular function was assessed by speckle tracking analysis of global longitudinal strain (GLS). Logistic regression models were used to assess the association between malaria status (yes/no) and GLS an

Three-Dimensional Global Left Ventricular Myocardial Strain Reduced in All Directions in Subclinical Diabetic Cardiomyopathy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background Three-dimensional (3D) speckle tracking echocardiography can identify subclinical diabetic cardiomyopathy without geometric assumption and loss of speckle from out-of-plane motions. There is, however, significant heterogeneity among the previous reports. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare 3D strain values between adults with asymptomatic, subclinical diabetes mellitus (ie, patients with diabetes mellitus without known clinical manifestations of cardiac disease) and healthy controls. Methods and Results After systematic review of 5 databases, 12 valid studi

Possible Association Between Body Temperature and B-Type Natriuretic Peptide in Patients With Cardiovascular Diseases.

BACKGROUND: In addition to various biological effects of natriuretic peptides (NP) on cardiovascular systems, we recently reported that NP raises intracellular temperature in cultured adipocytes. We herein examined the possible thermogenic action of NP in consideration of hemodynamic parameters and inflammatory reaction by proposing structural equation models. METHODS AND RESULTS: The study population consisted of 1985 consecutive patients who underwent cardiac catheterization. Covariance structure analyses were performed to clarify the direct contribution of plasma B-type NP (BNP) to body te

Speckle-tracking echocardiography combined with imaging mass spectrometry assesses region-dependent alterations.

Left ventricular (LV) contraction is characterized by shortening and thickening of longitudinal and circumferential fibres. To date, it is poorly understood how LV deformation is altered in the pathogenesis of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced type 1 diabetes mellitus-associated diabetic cardiomyopathy and how this is associated with changes in cardiac structural composition. To gain further insights in these LV alterations, eight-week-old C57BL6/j mice were intraperitoneally injected with 50 mg/kg body weight STZ during 5 consecutive days. Six, 9, and 12 weeks (w) post injections, echocardiographi

Cardiac MRI Reveals Late Diastolic Changes in Left Ventricular Relaxation Patterns During Healthy Aging.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac MRI is an emerging modality for evaluating left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction (LVDD), a pathological condition that is prevalent in aging populations. However, there is a lack of reports of MRI-derived LV diastolic properties in late diastole. PURPOSE: To test the hypothesis that cine MRI-derived motion/deformation indices can be used to characterize age-related changes on LV relaxation patterns in late diastole. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. POPULATION: In all, 412 participants (72.5 ± 4.6 years old, range 65-84) without a documented history of cardiovascular dise

Septic cardiomyopathy: A narrative review.

Sepsis is a systemic inflammatory response syndrome of suspected or documented infectious origin, whose outcome is multiorgan failure. Sepsis-induced myocardial dysfunction (SIMD), present in more than 50% of septic patients, is characterized by (i) left ventricular (LV) dilatation with normal or low filling pressure, (ii) right and/or LV (systolic and/or diastolic) dysfunction and (iii) reversibility. Since the first definition proposed by Parker et al. in 1984, attempts have been made to define SIMD. Many parameters are used to assess cardiac function in septic patients, sometimes making it

Restrictive cardiomyopathy: definition and diagnosis.

Restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM) is a heterogeneous group of diseases characterized by restrictive left ventricular pathophysiology, i.e. a rapid rise in ventricular pressure with only small increases in filling volume due to increased myocardial stiffness. More precisely, the defining feature of RCM is the coexistence of persistent restrictive pathophysiology, diastolic dysfunction, non-dilated ventricles, and atrial dilatation, regardless of ventricular wall thickness and systolic function. Beyond this shared haemodynamic hallmark, the phenotypic spectrum of RCM is wide. The disorders manife

Left Ventricular Thrombus Following Acute Myocardial Infarction: JACC State-of-the-Art Review.

The incidence of left ventricular (LV) thrombus following acute myocardial infarction has markedly declined in recent decades caused by advancements in reperfusion and antithrombotic therapies. Despite this, embolic events remain the most feared complication of LV thrombus necessitating systemic anticoagulation. Mechanistically, LV thrombus development depends on Virchow's triad (ie, endothelial injury from myocardial infarction, blood stasis from LV dysfunction, and hypercoagulability triggered by inflammation, with each of these elements representing potential therapeutic targets). Diagnosti
