Outcomes of Pediatric ABO-incompatible Living Kidney Transplantations From 2002 to 2015: An Analysis of the Japanese Kidney Transplant Registry.

BACKGROUND: Extensive data have been accumulated for adults who have undergone ABO-incompatible (ABOi)-living kidney transplantation (LKT). In contrast, available published data on pediatric recipients who underwent ABOi-LKT from the early to middle 2000s is very limited. Thus, pediatric ABOi-LKT has remained relatively rare, and there is a lack of large, multicenter data. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Japanese Kidney Transplant Registry to clarify the patient and graft outcomes of pediatric recipients who underwent ABOi-LKT from 2002 to 2015. A total of 102 ABOi and 788 ABO-compatible (

ABO blood group barrier in allogeneic bone marrow transplantation revisited.

Reports have shown a worse outcome for donor-recipient pairs mismatched for ABO blood groups in bone marrow transplantation (BMT). These studies, however, included small and heterogeneous study populations, and not all considered bidirectional ABO incompatibility separately. Because the issue remains controversial, we analyzed the effect of ABO mismatch on the overall survival, transplant-related mortality, and occurrence of acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) in a large homogenous group of patients undergoing allogeneic BMT. A total of 3103 patients with early-stage leukemia wh

A computer match program for paired and unconventional kidney exchanges.

The number of renal transplants can be increased by implementing an exchange program involving donor-recipient pairs for whom the donors are each incompatible with their original patient but compatible with each other's patient. The number can be further increased if the exchanges are not limited to ABO incompatible pairs or combinations of two donor-recipient pairs. However, as the number of donor-recipient pairs willing to participate in such a program increases, there is a substantial increase in both the time taken to identify such matches and the potential for error. We have developed a c

ABO incompatibility as an adverse risk factor for survival after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Graft ABO incompatibility has not been thought to affect patient survival after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation, although it may be associated with prolonged erythroid aplasia and immediate or delayed hemolysis. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of a cohort of 292 allogeneic transplant recipients measured survival in a subgroup of ABO-incompatible bone marrow graft recipients. RESULTS: Patients with acute myelogenous leukemia or myelodysplastic syndrome receiving non-T-cell-depleted bone marrow grafts had an 85-percent greater risk of death within 100 days

West Nile virus nucleic acid persistence in whole blood months after clearance in plasma: implication for transfusion and transplantation safety.

BACKGROUND: Previous reports of West Nile virus (WNV) RNA persistence in blood compartments have raised concerns around the remaining risk of WNV transfusion transmission. This study characterized the dynamics of WNV viremia in blood compartments in a longitudinal cohort of 54 WNV-infected blood donors. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Blood samples were collected throughout the year after WNV RNA-positive blood donation (index) and characterized for WNV immunoglobulin (Ig)M and IgG antibodies and for WNV RNA by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. WNV viral loads were compared

Human antibody responses to bovine (Newbury-2) norovirus (GIII.2) and association to histo-blood group antigens.

Serum antibodies to bovine norovirus have been found recently in about 22% of humans. Whether this prevalence reflects limited virulence properties of the virus or that inherited host factors provide protection against bovine norovirus infection in humans remains to be established. To investigate whether histo-blood group antigens correlate with the presence of bovine norovirus (GIII.2) antibody, plasma (n = 105) from Swedish blood donors, genotyped and phenotyped for secretor, Lewis and ABO, were tested and compared for the frequency of IgG antibody and antibody titer to Bo/Newbury2/76/UK. Non-O blood groups as independent predictors of chronic subdural hematoma recurrence in antithrombotic-naive patients: risk mitigation by prior aspirin use and new perspectives for stratification.

OBJECTIVE: Recurrence after surgical treatment of chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) remains insufficiently understood. Microvascular pathology of the CSDH membrane is a suspected driver of this recurrence, supported by reduced recurrence following middle meningeal artery embolization. Given the known differences in clotting propensity among ABO blood groups and the frequent use of antiplatelet and/or anticoagulant therapy (AAT) in the CSDH population, this study aimed to investigate the impact of ABO blood groups on postoperative recurrence risk. METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective

Blood Group O-Dependent Cellular Responses to Cholera Toxin: Parallel Clinical and Epidemiological Links to Severe Cholera.

Because O blood group has been associated with more severe cholera infections, it has been hypothesized that cholera toxin (CT) may bind non-O blood group antigens of the intestinal mucosae, thereby preventing efficient interaction with target GM1 gangliosides required for uptake of the toxin and activation of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) signaling in target epithelia. Herein, we show that after exposure to CT, human enteroids expressing O blood group exhibited marked increase in cAMP relative to cells derived from blood group A individuals. Likewise, using CRISPR/Cas9 engineering, a

ABO blood group antigen mismatch has an impact on outcome after allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation.

ABO blood group antigen incompatibility (ABO mismatch) is not an obstacle to allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT). However, the impact on clinical outcome after allo-SCT remains controversial. We analyzed 512 patients after allogeneic peripheral blood SCT (allo-PBSCT) for an association of ABO mismatch with transfusion requirements, myeloid and platelet engraftment, the incidence of GvHD, relapse, transplant-related mortality (TRM), and overall survival (OS). A total of 260 patients underwent ABO-mismatched transplantation and the control group consisted of 252 patients with ABO-mat

Prevalence of Red Blood Cell Major Blood Group Antigens and Phenotypes among Omani Blood Donors.

OBJECTIVES: Most literature on the frequencies of red blood cell (RBC) phenotypes are published in Europeans and Africans countries, with the frequencies in the Omani population unknown. We sought to determine the prevalence of RBC blood group phenotypes among Omani blood donors. METHODS: Blood group ABO, RhD type, and phenotyping were performed for 21 blood group antigens on enrolled blood donors. The following antigens were assessed serologically: Rh (C, c, E, e), Kell (K, k, Kpa, Kpb), Kidd (Jka, Jkb), Duffy (Fya, Fyb), Lewis (Lea, Leb), Lutheran (Lua, Lub), MNS (M, N, S, s), and P1. RESU

Case Report of an ABO-Matched Post-Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant-Associated Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia: A Diagnostic and Therapeutic Challenge.

Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is a rare complication of ABO-matched hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Post-HSCT AIHA is diagnosed by a positive hemolysis laboratory work-up and positive direct antiglobulin testing with usually a pan-reactive antibody in indirect antiglobulin testing. In this case report, we describe the diagnosis of post-HSCT AIHA in a 62-year-old male patient and its management with combined immunosuppressive therapy with steroids, rituximab, and intravenous immunoglobulin to achieve transfusion independence and disease remission. Post-HSCT AIHA is generall

ABO Blood Type and Short-Term Mortality in Patients With Infection-Associated Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation.

BACKGROUND: Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a devastating disease of the coagulation system. We examined the association between ABO blood type and short-term mortality in patients with infection-associated DIC. METHODS: The study cohort was drawn from the Danish Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DANDIC) cohort. Our subcohort was restricted to patients with infection-associated DIC. All-cause 30-day and 90-day mortality were computed by Kaplan-Meier estimates and odds ratios between ABO blood types were examined using logistic regression analysis adjusted for age, sex, c

Human ABO Blood Groups and Their Associations with Different Diseases.

INTRODUCTION: Human ABO blood type antigens exhibit alternative phenotypes and genetically derived glycoconjugate structures that are located on the red cell surface which play an active role in the cells' physiology and pathology. Associations between the blood type and disease have been studied since the early 1900s when researchers determined that antibodies and antigens are inherited. However, due to lack of antigens of some blood groups, there have been some contentious issues with the association between the ABO blood group and vulnerability to certain infectious and noninfectious diseas

Possible Link Between the ABO Blood Group of Bioprosthesis Recipients and Specific Types of Structural Degeneration.

Background Pigs/bovines share common antigens with humans: α-Gal, present in all pigs/bovines close to the human B-antigen; and AH-histo-blood-group antigen, identical to human AH-antigen and present only in some animals. We investigate the possible impact of patients' ABO blood group on bioprosthesis structural valve degeneration (SVD) through calcification/pannus/tears/perforations for patients ≤60 years at implantation. Methods and Results This was a single-center study (Paris, France) that included all degenerative bioprostheses explanted between 1985 and 1998, mostly porcine bioprostheses

Allocation and matching in kidney exchange programs.

Living donor kidney transplantation is the preferred treatment for patients suffering from end-stage renal disease. To alleviate the shortage of kidney donors, many advances have been made to improve the utilization of living donors deemed incompatible with their intended recipient. The most prominent of these advances is kidney paired donation (KPD), which matches incompatible patient-donor pairs to facilitate a kidney exchange. This review discusses the various approaches to matching and allocation in KPD. In particular, it focuses on the underlying principles of matching and allocation appr

Are laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma incidence and patient mortality a function of ABO blood grouping? A retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: Few studies have examined the association between ABO blood grouping and head and neck cancer. This retrospective review examined the association between blood group and laryngeal cancer incidence and patient mortality. METHODS: Of 271 patients treated for squamous cell laryngeal carcinoma (1997-2002), 143 patients with supraglottic, glottic and subglottic tumours were included; 128 patients were excluded. The blood group characteristics of patients and healthy blood donors were compared. RESULTS: There was no significant correlation between blood type and laryngeal carcinoma inci

Biliary tract complications after liver transplantation: a review.

Biliary complications continue to be a major cause of morbidity in liver transplant recipients with an incidence of 10-30% following whole-organ transplantation and a mortality rate of up to 10%. Biliary leaks and strictures are most common but sphincter of Oddi dysfunction, hemobilia, and biliary obstruction are also observed. Biliary complications may be related to various factors such as hepatic artery patency, preservation injury, cytomegalovirus infection, chronic ductopenic rejection, ABO incompatibility, and technical reasons. The latter include imperfect anastomosis, T-tube-related com

Blood group AB is associated with increased risk for severe dengue disease in secondary infections.

Why certain individuals progress to severe dengue disease is unknown. In this study, blood groups associated with dengue disease were investigated. ABO phenotypes were identified by use of serum from 399 patients with dengue-virus infection who participated in a cohort study. ABO blood-group frequencies were similar in primary versus secondary dengue-virus infections. However, in secondary infection, individuals with blood group AB were likely to have dengue hemorrhagic fever grade 3 than either grades 1 and 2 combined (corrected P value, <.0001; odds ratio, 0.097 [95% confidence interval, 0.0

Molecular basis for para-Bombay phenotypes in Chinese persons, including a novel nonfunctional FUT1 allele.

BACKGROUND: The para-Bombay phenotype is characterized by H-deficient or H-partially deficient red blood cells (RBCs) in persons who secrete ABH antigens in their saliva. The studies that determined the genotypes for two Chinese individuals with the para-Bombay phenotype are described. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: RBC phenotypes were characterized by conventional serologic methods. Exons 6 and 7 of the ABO gene were amplified, as well as the entire coding region for FUT1 and FUT2, with four independence polymerase chain reactions (PCRs) from genomic DNA. PCR products were excised, purified from

Does donor-recipient ABO incompatibility protect against relapse after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation in first remission acute myeloid leukemia?

It is not known if donor-recipient ABO blood group incompatibility contributes to graft-versus-leukemia after allogeneic BMT. One hundred and nineteen patients with acute myeloid leukemia in first remission underwent non-T cell-depleted marrow allografts from HLA-identical siblings after TBI and cyclophosphamide (n = 72) or melphalan (n = 47). GVHD prophylaxis comprised cyclosporine alone or cyclosporine-methotrexate. Twenty-two patients relapsed at 3-46 months (median 7): 18 of 76 patients with ABO-matched donors and four of 43 patients with ABO-mismatched donors (actuarial 5-year probabiliti
