In this investigation, a new design based on a PANDA ring resonator as an optical trapping tool for tangle protein, molecular motor storage, and delivery is proposed. The optical vortices are generated and the trapping mechanism is controlled in the same way as the conventional optical tweezers. The trapping force is produced by a combination of the gradient field and scattering photons. The required molecular volume is trapped and moved dynamically within the molecular network. The tangle protein and molecular motor can be transported and delivered to the required destinations for Alzheimer's

The dorsolateral column of the mesencephalic periaqueductal gray (PAG) is a separate part of the PAG. Its afferent sources, efferent targets, and neurochemical properties differ from the adjacent PAG columns. The dorsolateral PAG is thought to be associated with aversive behaviors, but it is not yet understood how these behaviors are brought about. To elucidate the function of the PAG further, in the present study we investigated which brainstem regions project to the dorsolateral PAG. Wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP) injections involving the dorsolateral PAG, but extendi

The Edinger-Westphal nucleus (EW), anteromedian nucleus (AM) and adjacent neurons in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) are sources of preganglionic parasympathetic innervation of intraocular smooth muscle, including blood vessels, pupillary muscle and the ciliary body in mammals. They also have central connections that are believed to affect parasympathetic outflow indirectly. This study utilized anterograde transport of biotinylated dextran amine and Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin to demonstrate direct projections from the vestibular nuclei to the Edinger-Westphal and anteromedian nuclei i

Accumulating evidence suggests that the piriform cortex (PC) plays a critical role in the development of limbic motor seizures. In the anterior piriform cortex (aPC), a functionally defined, discrete epileptogenic site has been previously identified by unilateral microinjection of bicuculline in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats and termed the 'area tempestas' (AT). Compared to this site in the aPC, more posterior PC sites, particularly a site in the transition zone between the posterior and aPC (central PC) exhibited a greater susceptibility to electrical stimulation. However, it is not known whether

The distribution of the retrogradely-transganglionically transported lectin soybean agglutinin (SBA) and of SBA conjugated to horseradish peroxidase (SBA-HRP) has been examined in the L4-5 dorsal root ganglia, lumbar spinal cord and gracile nucleus at 2, 6 and 14 weeks after sciatic nerve transection and ligation. Cell size analysis showed there were no changes in the mean area of labelled DRG profiles after injury. In the spinal cord, terminal labelling was restricted to laminae I and II with no evidence of labelling in novel territories such as the deeper laminae after injury. At 2 weeks, th

An immunohistochemical and immunoelectron microscopic study was used to demonstrate tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and dopamine beta-hydroxylase (DBH) immunoreactivities in the rat pancreas. Small TH immunoreactive cells were found in close contact with large TH immunonegative ganglion cells among the exocrine glands and were occasionally found in some islets. Some of these TH immunoreactive cells were also DBH immunopositive. The immunoreaction product was seen diffusely in the cytoplasm and in the granule cores of TH immunoreactive cells. All intra-pancreatic ganglion cells were immunoreactive fo

This study used neuroanatomical techniques to investigate sources of afferents to the Edinger-Westphal nucleus (EW) of the pigeon. The EW contains the parasympathetic preganglionic neurons that, by way of the oculomotor nerve, project to the ciliary ganglion (Narayanan and Narayanan, '76; Lyman and Mugnaini, '80). The ciliary ganglion, in turn, innervates the internal musculature of the eye; the ciliary body, the iris sphincter muscle, and the smooth muscle of choroidal blood vessels (Marwitt et al., '71; Pilar and Tuttle, '82). In the bird, the neurons in the ciliary ganglion that innervate t

The thalamic projections to the hippocampal formation and to the subicular and entorhinal areas in the cat have been studied with retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) or wheat germ agglutinin conjugated to HRP (WGA-HRP) and anterograde transport of WGA-HRP. Retrograde transport tracers injected in various parts of these cortices resulted in labeled cells in the midline, anterior, and lateral dorsal nuclei. Injections into the hippocampal formation or the subiculum led to retrograde labeling of cells in the reuniens nucleus of the ipsilateral thalamus throughout its rostrocaudal

A double labeling technique employing retrograde labeling of vagal neurons with horseradish peroxidase from injections into the stomach wall and immunocytochemistry for dopamine-beta-hydroxylase revealed catecholaminergic neurons in the medulla oblongata which project into the abdomen. The great majority of such neurons were located in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus, particularly in its rostral third.

It has been proposed that the drugs (6-hydroxydopamine, guanethidine, vinblastine) which are known to destroy sympathetic neurons in neonatal animals do so by preventing the accumulation of retrogradely transported nerve growth factor (NGF). It was found, consistent with the proposal, that administration of 6-hydroxydopamine (100 mg/kg s.c.) or vinblastine (0.4 mg/kg s.c.) 16 h prior to the administration of [125I]NGF complete prevented the accumulation of retrogradely transported [125I]NGF in superior cervical ganglia of neonatal rats. Administration of 6-hydroxydopamine or vinblastine to adu

BACKGROUND: Acetylation of α-tubulin is an important post-translational modification that helps maintain microtubules' stability and dynamics, including axonal transport, cell signaling, and overall neuronal integrity. This study investigates sex-based differences in alcohol-induced acetylation of α-tubulin in mouse cerebellum.
METHODS: Adult, 3-month-old male and female C57BL/6 mice were administered 20% ethanol intraperitoneally. The cerebellum was dissected at 30 min, 1 h, 2 h, and 4 h post-injection. Expression levels of cerebellar acetylation of α-tubulin and enzymes mediating acetylatio…

Hypoxic-ischemic brain damage (HIBD) is one of the main causes of disability in middle-aged and elderly people, as well as high mortality rates and long-term physical impairments in newborns. The pathological manifestations of HIBD include neuronal damage and loss of myelin sheaths. Tau protein is an important microtubule-associated protein in brain, exists in neurons and oligodendrocytes, and regulates various cellular activities such as cell differentiation and maturation, axonal transport, and maintenance of cellular cytoskeleton structure. Phosphorylation is a common chemical modification …
