Persistent effects of cognitive-behavioral stress management on cortisol responses to acute stress in healthy subjects--a randomized controlled trial.

Psychosocial stress leads to a release of cortisol. While this psychoneuroendocrine response helps to maintain physiological as well as psychological equilibrium under stress, exaggerated secretion of cortisol has been shown to have negative effects on somatic health and cognitive functioning. The study set out to examine the long-term effects of cognitive-behavioral stress management training on cortisol stress responses in healthy men and women. Eighty-three healthy subjects were randomly assigned to cognitive-behavioral stress management (CBSM) training or a control condition. Four months a

The 'medically unexplained symptoms' syndrome concept and the cognitive-behavioural treatment model.

The American Psychiatric Association's, 2013 DSM-5 abandoned the use of the term 'medically unexplained symptoms' for non-neurological disorders. In the UK, treatments for various medical illnesses with unexplained aetiology, such as chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome and fibromyalgia, continue to fall under an MUS umbrella with cognitive behavioural therapy promoted as a primary therapeutic approach. In this editorial, we comment on whether the MUS concept is a viable diagnostic term, the credibility of the cognitive-behavioural MUS treatment model, the necessity of practition

The time course of hypoxia effects using an aviation survival trainer.

INTRODUCTION: Reduced environmental oxygen levels at high altitudes can result in hypoxic hypoxia, which remains a primary threat in tactical aviation. Hypoxia broadly impairs cognition and can degrade a pilot's ability to safely operate the aircraft. Current hypoxia countermeasures include aircraft life support systems that deliver supplemental oxygen and using controlled hypoxia exposures to train aviators to recognize symptoms. To maximize the effectiveness of these countermeasures, it is critical to understand how hypoxia impacts performance and associated neurocognitive outcomes. We previ

Digital technology anxiety and teacher digital literacy development: a longitudinal examination of cognitive appraisal mechanisms.

This study examines how teacher digital technology anxiety influences digital literacy development through cognitive appraisal mechanisms. Employing a three-wave longitudinal design spanning one academic year, we surveyed 1,247 in-service teachers across urban, suburban, and rural schools in China at six-month intervals. Cross-lagged panel modeling revealed that digital technology anxiety significantly predicted subsequent decreases in digital literacy development, with this relationship demonstrating temporal precedence over reverse pathways. Mediation analyses grounded in cognitive appraisal

Hemisphericity and its validity for education, vocation, and cognitive style.

Six studies are described demonstrating practical use for individual assessment of specialized cognitive function associated with the left and right cerebral hemispheres. Study #1 demonstrates that the majority of referred reading difficulties have a cognitive profile for which verbosequential abilities are 0.5 SD below average, while visuospatial abilities are 0.5 SD above average. Study #2 also demonstrates that first degree family members of dyslexics favor visuospatial skills. Study #3 demonstrates that public school children have lower reading but not lower arithmetic scores if their cogn

Cognitive remediation for schizophrenia: it is even more complicated.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Attempts to remediate the cognitive difficulties of people with a diagnosis of schizophrenia have shown efficacy; however, existing treatment studies display huge variation, frustrating efforts to determine how best to apply this treatment tool. This review summarizes findings of induced cognitive change in schizophrenia, with reference to the remediation method, the presence of accompanying treatment(s), how cognitive change generalizes and its value. RECENT FINDINGS: Although there is strong evidence that cognitive change can be induced in schizophrenia, there is little e

Training nurses in an international emergency medical team using a serious role-playing game: a retrospective comparative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although game-based applications have been used in disaster medicine education, no serious computer games have been designed specifically for training these nurses in an IEMT setting. To address this need, we developed a serious computer game called the IEMTtraining game. In this game, players assume the roles of IEMT nurses, assess patient injuries in a virtual environment, and provide suitable treatment options. METHODS: The design of this study is a retrospective comparative analysis. The research was conducted with 209 nurses in a hospital. The data collection process of this

Teaching Surgical Model Development in Research by Using Situated Learning and Instructional Scaffolding.

Resources detailing the scope, details, and duration for teaching and learning surgical model development in research are poorly described. Situated learning and instructional scaffolding are useful skill-building tools. Herein, we discuss educational theory in the context of a training paradigm for surgical researchers, using our experience with a nonunion femoral fracture model as an example. Stages of learning include cognitive, associative, and autonomous stages. In surgical training, the cognitive stage involves the acquisition of basic knowledge, including anatomy, surgical approach, ins

Effect of physical exercise on cognitive function after chemotherapy in patients with breast cancer: a randomized controlled trial (PAM study).

BACKGROUND: Up to 60% of breast cancer patients treated with chemotherapy is confronted with cognitive problems, which can have a significant impact on daily activities and quality of life (QoL). We investigated whether exercise training improves cognition in chemotherapy-exposed breast cancer patients 2-4 years after diagnosis. METHODS: Chemotherapy-exposed breast cancer patients, with both self-reported cognitive problems and lower than expected performance on neuropsychological tests, were randomized to an exercise or control group. The 6-month exercise intervention consisted of supervised

Use of Music Therapy as an Audiological Rehabilitation Tool in the Elderly Population: A Mini-Review.

It is well known and documented that sensory perception decreases with age. In the elderly population, hearing loss and reduced vestibular function are among the most prevalently affected senses. Two important side effects of sensory deprivation are cognitive decline and decrease in social participation. Hearing loss, vestibular function impairment, and cognitive decline all lead to a decrease in social participation. Altogether, these problems have a great impact on the quality of life of the elderly. This is why a rehabilitation program covering all of these aspects would therefore be useful
