We investigate the relationship between scalp microbiota and dandruff/seborrhoeic dermatitis (D/SD), an unpleasant scalp disorder common in human populations. Bacterial and fungal community analyses on scalp of 102 Korean were performed by next-generation sequencing. Overall scalp microbiome composition significantly differed between normal and disease groups, and especially co-occurrence network of dominant members was breakdown in disease groups. These findings will provide novel insights into shifts of microbial community relevant to D/SD.

A 5-year-old boy presented with widespread asymptomatic hyperpigmented verrucous plaques since 3 months of age. The lesions were distributed in a linear manner along Blaschko's lines on trunk and extremities and were accentuated in flexures and around joints. There was no history of blistering or redness and no other family member was affected. Carriage of Malassezia spp. yeasts in healthy Cornish Rex cats (CRC) was compared with that in Devon Rex (DRC) and Domestic short-haired (DSH) cats. Samples obtained from the left external ear canal, anus and claw fold of digit III of the left fore foot by swabbing, and the axilla and groin using contact plates, were incubated for yeasts on modified Dixon's agar at 32 degrees C for 7 days. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of an oral contraceptive (Novial) on facial seborrhea and moderate acne.
METHODS: In this nonrandomized, group-comparative trial, women aged between 18 and 30 with seborrhea were enrolled. Women used either a phasic oral contraceptive containing ethinylestradiol (35/30/30 microg) and Desogestrel (50/100/150 microg (DSG-OC)) (n = 177) or no hormonal treatment (control group; n = 77) for four cycles.

A fifty five-year old woman suffered from itching and scaling of the edge of her eyelid. She had long used topical corticosteroid for this condition. Direct examination of the scale by Parker KOH showed numerous fungal elements of spores and hyphae of Malassezia furfur. She was treated with oral itraconazole (100 mg daily or twice a week) for 8 weeks and was cured clinically and mycologically. The result suggests the possibility of treatment with an anti-fungal drug for seborrhoeic blepharitis or seborrhoeic dermatitis.

Thirty strains of the lipophilic yeast Pityrosporum ovale were isolated from patients suffering from seborrhoeic dermatitis and dandruff and tested for susceptibility both to some classic antifungal agents and to several primarily non-antimycotic drugs. Minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of altogether eleven agents were measured by the agar dilution technique. As expected, the tested imidazoles showed a good inhibition of growth of Pityrosporum. In order to analyse the humoral immune response to the commensal yeast Pityrosporum ovale, we developed a western immunoblot technique with a salt soluble extract of P. ovale cytoplasm. In the present study, we tested sera from patients with psoriasis (n = 15), seborrhoeic dermatitis (n = 10), pityriasis versicolor (n = 8), and normal controls (n = 10). Both systemic and topical application of ketoconazole (CAS 65277-42-1) have been found effective in seborrhoeic dermatitis. The topical application of 2% ketoconazole in a cream base in particular has so far only once been compared to the application of the vehicle. The hypothesis that sebum permits the growth of Pityrosporum ovale, and hence the development of seborrhoeic dermatitis, was tested by observing whether a reduction of sebum production by isotretinoin would improve the disorder. Cimetidine, a histamine H2 antagonist, seems to have anti-androgenic activity. 22 young women were studied during follicular phase prior to and after a 3 month period of treatment with cimetidine (1,200 mg daily). Three month treatment with cimetidine resulted in a significant decrease of seborrheic index (p less than 10(-4)) and casual level (p less than 10(-4)). Testosterone level, TeBG binding capacity and free testosterone were unaffected by the treatment. Cimetidine decrease sebum secretion without change in androgen parameters.

A case is reported of a forty-nine-year-old black man in whom numerous skin-colored papules and verrucoid plaques had developed on his penis over the course of fifteen years. He did not seek medical attention, and some of the lesions had become quite large. The initial clinical impression was condyloma acuminatum, and prior to therapeutic intervention histologic evaluation revealed findings diagnostic of seborrheic keratosis. Seborrheic keratoses should be considered in the differential diagnosis of penile lesions especially because of clinical similarities to condylomata acuminata.

Skin biopsies from 10 patients with seborrheic keratoses were examined by electron microscopy for the presence of Langerhans' cells. Comparing seborrheic keratoses with normal skin of the same patient and with normal skin from controls, neither an increased number of Langerhans' cells nor an increased number of specific granules, Birbeck granules, nor abnormal Langerhans' cells, was found. Melanosomes in a Langerhans' cell were observed in 2 seborrheic keratoses, suggesting phagocytic activity of the Langerhans' cell.
