Cholera Outbreak - Haiti, September 2022-January 2023.

On September 30, 2022, after >3 years with no confirmed cholera cases (1), the Directorate of Epidemiology, Laboratories and Research (DELR) of the Haitian Ministry of Public Health and Population (Ministère de la Santé Publique et de la Population [MSPP]) was notified of two patients with acute, watery diarrhea in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince. Within 2 days, Haiti's National Public Health Laboratory confirmed the bacterium Vibrio cholerae O1 in specimens from the two patients with suspected cholera infection, and an outbreak investigation began immediately. Unmet health needs and barriers to health care among people experiencing homelessness in San Francisco's Mission District: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: People experiencing homelessness have unique health needs and barriers to medical and behavioral health care (mental health, substance use disorder, and overall well-being) compared to housed people. It remains unclear why many people experiencing homelessness do not access care when community-based homeless health care resources are available at low or no cost. This qualitative study examined perspectives of people experiencing homelessness and staff members at community-based homeless health and service organizations in San Francisco's Mission District on unmet medical and behavi

The HOME-21: A revised measure of the home environment for the 21st century tested in two independent samples.

For decades, the Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment (HOME) has been the most widely used measure of children's home environ … a more favorable family context indexed by fewer stressful life events (in FT only), less household food insecurity, lower household chaos, and more perceived social support. Higher HOME-21 scores were correlated with better parenting in the form of parental acceptance, positive parenting, warm involvement, appropriate and consistent discipline, verbal discussion …

Harmful Alcohol and Drug Use Is Associated with Syndemic Risk Factors among Female Sex Workers in Nairobi, Kenya.

Background: Female Sex Workers (FSWs) are at high risk of harmful alcohol and other drug use. We use quantitative data to describe the preva … ering risk factors including higher Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) scores, street homelessness, food insecurity (recent hunger), recent violence from clients, reduced condom use, depression/anxiety and police arrest. Qualitative interviews found that childhood neglect and violence were drivers of entry into sex work and alcohol use, and that alcohol and canna …

Associations between Obesity and Adverse Childhood Experiences in the United States.

Background: Obesity leads to serious health consequences in children and is potentially associated with increased adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Nationally representative studies examining associations between obesity and ACEs are lacking. Therefore, we aimed to determine the relationship between ACEs and childhood obesity. Methods: We performed a retrospective cross-sectional study of children 10-17 years of age, who participated in the 2018 National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH), a national population-based survey. Obesity was determined by CDC definitions using BMI calculated by

Improving Access to Maternity Care for Women with Opioid Use Disorders: Colocation of Midwifery Services at an Addiction Treatment Program.

Perinatal drug and alcohol use is associated with serious medical and psychiatric morbidity for pregnant and postpartum women and their newborns. Participation in prenatal care has been shown to improve outcomes, even in the absence of treatment for substance use disorders. Unfortunately, women with substance use disorders often do not receive adequate prenatal care. Barriers to accessing care for pregnant women with substance use disorders include medical and psychiatric comorbidities, transportation, caring for existing children, housing and food insecurity, and overall lack of resources. In…

Transcriptomics-based analysis using RNA-Seq of the coconut (Cocos nucifera) leaf in response to yellow decline phytoplasma infection.

Invasive phytoplasmas wreak havoc on coconut palms worldwide, leading to high loss of income, food insecurity and extreme poverty of farmers in producing countries. Phytoplasmas as strictly biotrophic insect-transmitted bacterial pathogens instigate distinct changes in developmental processes and defence responses of the infected plants and manipulate plants to their own advantage; however, little is known about the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying host-phytoplasma interactions. Further, phytoplasma-mediated transcriptional alterations in coconut palm genes have not yet been identi…

How deep does it really burn? Social and emotional implications of paediatric burn injuries and care on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.

BACKGROUND: Paediatric burns are highly painful and traumatic injuries that affect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children at disproportionate rates, yet their experiences are often omitted from burns research. This study aimed to better understand the social and emotional impacts and unmet support needs that paediatric burn injuries and care cause Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families. METHODS: This decolonial ethnographic study followed 20 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families' experiences of paediatric burns care at a tertiary hospital in Queensland, Australia. Thr

Material hardship in the postpartum year: Links to child maltreatment.

BACKGROUND: Millions of mothers with young children in the U.S. struggle to afford basic needs. Material hardships such as inadequate food, housing, and medical care increase risk for child maltreatment as mothers face heightened physical and emotional strain. OBJECTIVE: The present study applied a person-centered approach to understand unique subtypes of material hardship experienced by at-risk mothers in the postpartum year, and links from hardship subtypes to subsequent child maltreatment. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The sample included at-risk mothers who gave birth in one of 20 large Amer

Too healthy for their own good: orthorexia nervosa and compulsive exercise in the community.

BACKGROUND: The similarities and differences between orthorexia nervosa symptoms (ONs) and the symptoms and correlates of eating disorders listed in the DSM-5 need to be elucidated. ONs were examined in a volunteer community sample in conjunction with compulsive exercise, disordered eating, as well as emotional and behavioral correlates of eating disorders. METHODS: Participants were 561 adult volunteers (93 men, 17.09%) aged 19-72 (M = 32.7 ± 11), recruited via social media networks. Participants self-reported on the following measures online: Düsseldorf Orthorexia Scale, Compulsive Exercise

Climate change, disaster management and primary health care in Zimbabwe.

The health crises related to climate change in African countries are predicted to get worse and more prevalent. The response to catastrophic events such as cyclones, flooding and landslides must be rapid and well-coordinated. Slower adverse events such as droughts, heat stress and food insecurity must similarly be anticipated, planned for and resourced. There are lessons to be learnt by the health system following the crisis created by Cyclone Idai in Zimbabwe during March 2019, which required a massive humanitarian response to mitigate the impact of torrential rainfall on lives and livelihood…
