We report here complications of percutaneous transhepatic catheterization of the portal venous system in 170 Japanese patients with portal hypertension. All patients underwent percutaneous transhepatic portography and percutaneous transhepatic obliteration of oesophagogastric varices was also performed in 29 patients. After retraction of the catheter, the puncture canal was plugged with gelatin sponge in 150 subjects and with one steel coil in 20 others. The overall complication rate was 16.5%. Procedures involved in grooming, bathing, and other pet services can often lead animals to death. Of the necropsies of 1391 animals carried out at a private diagnostic laboratory in Sao Paulo, Brazil from 2004 to 2009, 94 were dogs that died during the above-mentioned procedures. The linear dependence of the intraabdominal pressure and the volume of retroperitoneal bleeding was revealed in 34 patients with the aortic aneurism rupture. In patients with the blunt abdominal trauma, treated conservatively and laparotomized (each group consisted of 26 patients), the intraabdominal pressure is higher in the operated group during the first day after the operation. The main factors of the intraabdominal hypertension seem to be shock and massive infusion and transfusion therapy.
