Striking contiguous depigmentation across the lower limbs in piebaldism and its implications for understanding melanocytic migration and development.

Piebaldism is a rare autosomal dominant disorder of pigmentation that is characterized by variable patches of depigmentation on the face, chest, abdomen, and extremities. We describe two cases of piebaldism, in whom the remarkable asymmetric distribution of the depigmented patches in a connected, contiguous pattern across the legs provides embryologic insights. This finding is not explained by the traditional theory that melanocytic migration only originates in the neural crest and progresses unilaterally down each leg. We propose that our cases, and other similar cases, can be explained by a

Clinicopathologic profile of hypopigmented mycosis fungoides in India.

BACKGROUND: Hypopigmented mycosis fungoides (HMF) is an under recognized disease in India, which is often mistaken for Hansen disease or vitiligo, resulting in delayed diagnosis and treatment. AIM: To describe the clinical, histopathologic and immunohistochemical features of HMF in Indian patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All cases presenting as hypopigmented lesions that were signed out as MF between 2001 and 2009 (15 cases) were included. Clinical data and histopathology slides were reviewed. Immunostains for CD4, CD8, and CD1a were done, where tissue was available. RESULTS: The age ranged

Hypomelanosis of Ito: pigmentary mosaicism with immature melanosome in keratinocytes.

BACKGROUND: Hypomelanosis of Ito is a rare genetic disorder characterized by whorled areas of hypomelanosis. The purpose of the present study was to revisit some aspects of Ito's hypomelanosis. METHODS: Clinical observations included ultraviolet-light-enhanced visualization (ULEV) method. Histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, and electron microscopy were performed on biopsy samples from the hypopigmented areas and the surrounding skin. RESULTS: Both the ULEV and microscopic examinations revealed the heterogeneity of the pigmentation. Hypomelanosis was characterized by a reduction in melanoso

Hypomagnesemia, insulin resistance, and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis in obese subjects.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological evidence shows a strong relationship between decreased serum magnesium levels (DSML) and insulin resistance. As nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) seems to be related to insulin resistance, the aim of this study was to determine the potential relationship between DSML and NASH in obese subjects. METHODS: We compared obese individuals with the diagnosis of diabetes, insulin-resistance, and non-insulin resistance to a control group of non-obese, non-insulin-resistant subjects. Participants were required to have negative viral markers and negligible alcohol intake. O

The role of the Lumina intense pulsed light system in the treatment of port wine stains--a case controlled study.

The pulsed dye laser has been the treatment of choice for port wine stains over the past 20 years. In the past 5 years there has been increasing discussion of the role of other light treatments, such as the intense pulsed light system in the treatment of port wine stains. These systems use high-energy lamps, which emit noncoherent broad-spectrum light. Cut off filters are applied depending on the treatment modality to limit the wavelengths emitted. We present the results of a 3-year prospective within patient controlled clinical trial using an intense pulsed light system called the Lumina, dev

Colocalized nevus depigmentosus and lentigines with underlying breast hypoplasia: a case of reverse mutation?

Nevus depigmentosus (ND) is classically defined as a congenital nonprogressive hypopigmented macule, stable in size and distribution. There have been many reports of colocalization of ND and lentigines. We describe development of multiple lentigines over ND in a 9-year-old girl along with hypoplasia of the underlying breast. The case is being reported to highlight the phenotypic manifestation of reverse mutation and the coincidental breast hypoplasia that has not been reported before.

Leucoderma treated by transplantation of a basal cell layer enriched suspension.

The aim of this study was to test the usefulness of a melanocyte-enriched cell suspension for the treatment of leucoderma. After removal of a superficial (4-30 cm2) skin sample, the cells were mechanically separated in a trypsin-EDTA solution, centrifuged and washed in a melanocyte medium. The melanocyte-enriched epidermal cell suspension devoid of stratum corneum and stratum granulosum was then applied to the dermabraded depigmented skin. The 26 patients treated had piebaldism (three), vitiligo vulgaris (17), segmental vitiligo (three), halo naevi (one), naevus depigmentosus (one) and chemica

Dyadic adjustment and quality of life in Albinism: A pilot study on their shared lived experiences with their loved ones.

BACKGROUND: Albinism, a group of rare genetic conditions characterized by visual impairment and variable hypopigmentation, is extensively studied in biomedical research. However, the psychosocial aspects, particularly in France, remain under-investigated, contributing to the invisibility of this sensory disability. OBJECTIVES: The ALBIPSY project aimed to explore the lived experience of persons with albinism (PWAs) and their significant others (SOs), and to examine the role of dyadic adjustment in maintaining their quality of life. METHODS AND SETTINGS: This study employed a sequential mixed…

Alopecia Areata in Skin of Color: Trichoscopic Analysis in Black/African American Patients.

IMPORTANCE: Alopecia areata (AA) has a higher prevalence in populations with skin of color, yet the trichoscopic features in this population … ots, and tapering hairs, alongside novel features including peripilar hyperpigmentation, follicular hypopigmentation, diffuse erythema, uninterrupted honeycomb patterns, and perifollicular scale were observed. No statistical significance was noted between the presence of trichoscopic features and the correlated SALT score. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: This study un …

Strabismus and nystagmus in oculocutaneous albinism: clinical perspectives, diagnosis, and role of neurotransmitters.

The rare recessive autosomal non-communicable disorder oculocutaneous albinism causes discoloration of the eye, hair, and skin. Oculocutaneous albinism is a hereditary group of disorders with sub-differential characteristics like reduction of pilar, cutaneous, and ocular pigmentation. Clinical characteristics and symptoms include strabismus, iris hypopigmentation, nystagmus, reduced visual acuity, foveal hypoplasia, refractive errors, photophobia, and colour-visual impairment. The associated genetic mutation results in the reduced activity of tyrosine activity required for the metabolism of me…
