Are costs optimized as scale-up of Choose to Move-an effective health-promoting intervention for older adults-proceeds?

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined costs of implementing evidence-based interventions (EBIs) as scale-up proceeds. Across four phases, we co-adapted and scaled up an effective EBI designed to promote older adults’ health (Choose to Move; CTM). Following formative evaluation (2015), Phases 1–2 (2016-17) comprised the CTM pilot and early scale-up. For Phase 3 (2018-20), we adapted CTM to establish “best fit” and support broad scale-up. In response to COVID-19 (2020), we adapted CTM for virtual delivery. For Phase 4 (2020-22), we adapted CTM to reduce resource use. We aimed to (1) identify, me

Dissemination of an evidence-based motivational interviewing brief intervention for substance use disorders to HIV service organizations across the United States: protocol for a national-level cluster-randomized adaptive parallel-groups superiority experiment.

BACKGROUND: Given the high prevalence of substance use disorders (SUDs) among people with HIV, integration of evidence-based SUD services within HIV service settings is needed. Federally-funded training and technical assistance centers, such as the Health Resources and Services Administration-funded AIDS Education and Training Center (AETC) network, are part of the support system that deliver strategies to promote the uptake of evidence-based interventions. Previously, our program of research supported (1) the effectiveness of facilitation for improving both the implementation and effectivenes

How to create accessible research summaries for the developmental language disorder community.

BACKGROUND: Eighty-five percent of medical research goes to waste, partly because it is not appropriately communicated to stakeholders. This represents a critical issue for the research community, especially because individuals who are impacted by research should be able to readily access that research. Making research findings accessible to key stakeholders is an important step in implementation science and in enabling research to have meaningful impacts. Plain language summaries are a tool to make research more accessible to individuals with communication disorders. While guidelines exist to…

Computer-Aided Discovery of Drugs Against Chagas Disease.

Chagas disease affects around 6-8 million people worldwide. The available treatments have considerable limitations, including their uncertain efficacy in the chronic phase of the disease in adults, their unfavorable safety profile that usually compromises adherence to treatment, their long duration, and the emergence of resistant strains. All these considerations justify the continuous search for improved therapies.Informatics has been increasingly integrated into all levels of biomedical sciences, including the discovery and development of new drugs. In silico methods are relevant in all doma

Asthma and Participation: A Scoping Review.

Asthma is a widespread pediatric chronic disease, but there is limited understanding of its impact on participation (other than physical activity) and the conceptualization of participation. We conducted a scoping review to explore the evidence on the relationship between pediatric asthma and participation in several domains of occupation outlined in the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework 4th Edition. A structured literature search was implemented in PubMed/MEDLINE, Elsevier EMBASE, CINAHL, SCOPUS, Clarivate Web of Science Core Collection, and APA PsycINFO. Data were extracted by occupati

Ig-VAE: Generative modeling of protein structure by direct 3D coordinate generation.

While deep learning models have seen increasing applications in protein science, few have been implemented for protein backbone generation-an important task in structure-based problems such as active site and interface design. We present a new approach to building class-specific backbones, using a variational auto-encoder to directly generate the 3D coordinates of immunoglobulins. Our model is torsion- and distance-aware, learns a high-resolution embedding of the dataset, and generates novel, high-quality structures compatible with existing design tools. We show that the Ig-VAE can be used wit

The Role of Artificial Intelligence in the Diagnosis and Management of Glaucoma.

Glaucomatous optic neuropathy is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Diagnosis and monitoring of disease involves integrating information from the clinical examination with subjective data from visual field testing and objective biometric data that includes pachymetry, corneal hysteresis, and optic nerve and retinal imaging. This intricate process is further complicated by the lack of clear definitions for the presence and progression of glaucomatous optic neuropathy, which makes it vulnerable to clinician interpretation error. Artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-enabled wor

Statistical finite elements for misspecified models.

We present a statistical finite element method for nonlinear, time-dependent phenomena, illustrated in the context of nonlinear internal waves (solitons). We take a Bayesian approach and leverage the finite element method to cast the statistical problem as a nonlinear Gaussian state-space model, updating the solution, in receipt of data, in a filtering framework. The method is applicable to problems across science and engineering for which finite element methods are appropriate. The Korteweg-de Vries equation for solitons is presented because it reflects the necessary complexity while being su

Applying the phenotype approach for rosacea to practice and research.

BACKGROUND: Rosacea diagnosis and classification have evolved since the 2002 National Rosacea Society expert panel subtype approach. Several working groups are now aligned to a more patient-centric phenotype approach, based on an individual's presenting signs and symptoms. However, subtyping is still commonplace across the field and an integrated strategy is required to ensure widespread progression to the phenotype approach. OBJECTIVES: To provide practical recommendations that facilitate adoption of a phenotype approach across the rosacea field. METHODS: A review of the literature and cons

Urgent global opportunities to prevent birth defects.

Birth defects are an urgent global health priority. They affect millions of births worldwide. But their prevalence and impact are largely under-ascertained, particularly in middle- and low-income countries. Fortunately, a large proportion of birth defects can be prevented. This review examines the global prevalence and primary prevention methods for major preventable birth defects: congenital rubella syndrome, folic acid-preventable spina bifida and anencephaly, fetal alcohol syndrome, Down syndrome, rhesus hemolytic disease of the fetus and the newborn; and those associated with maternal diab

Combating tropical infectious diseases: report of the Disease Control Priorities in Developing Countries Project.

Infectious diseases are responsible for >25% of the global disease toll. The new Disease Control Priorities in Developing Countries Project (DCPP) aims to decrease the burden of these diseases by producing science-based analyses from demographic, epidemiologic, disease intervention, and economic evidence for the purpose of defining disease priorities and implementing control measures. The DCPP recently reviewed selected tropical infectious diseases, examined successful control experiences, and defined unsettled patient treatment, prevention, and research issues. Disease elimination programs ag

Developing consensus: mercury science and policy in the NAFTA countries (Canada, the United States and Mexico).

The international science community has recognized methylmercury in the aquatic food chain, as a potential environmental and human health risk. As a result, countries around the world have implemented a number of mercury management initiatives. The United States, Mexico and Canada in consultation with stakeholders are developing a trilateral North American Regional Action Plan (NARAP) on mercury. Through public involvement in the decision making process, the NARAP has offered opportunities for more transparency in transactions between governments, industry and stakeholders. In spite of the ava

A survey of researchers' attitudes to preregistration in animal research reveals multiple perceived barriers to adoption.

Preregistration is arguably one of the most promising and potentially impactful Open Science practices. Defined as the a priori registration of study designs and analysis plans, preregistration has long been established as standard practice in clinical human research and is increasingly taken up in other fields of science. Despite growing evidence suggesting that preregistration can mitigate questionable research practices, and the existence of two platforms targeting animal studies, preregistration has remained uncommon in animal research. In light of a "reproducibility crisis" and calls for

Charge Your Brainzzz: the systematic development of a whole systems action program promoting sleep health in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Inadequate sleep among Dutch adolescents is a complex public health issue with detrimental effects on physical and mental well-being. Previous interventions have shown limited or no lasting effects. While systems approaches help to understand and address such challenges, effective prevention efforts require theory- and evidence-based intervention design using behavior change techniques. This study outlines the systematic development of a ‘whole systems action program’, named Charge Your Brainzzz (CYB), to promote healthy sleep in Dutch adolescents aged 12–15, by integrating theory-
