A micro-process analysis of Functional Analytic Psychotherapy's mechanism of change.

This study sought to clarify the micro-process of Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP) by using the Functional Analytic Psychotherapy Rating Scale (FAPRS) to code every client and therapist turn of speech over the course of successful treatment of an individual meeting diagnostic criteria for depression and histrionic personality disorder. Treatment consisted of cognitive behavioral therapy alone followed by the addition of FAP techniques in a unique A / A+B design. In-session client behavior improved following the shift to FAP techniques, and micro-process data suggested that client behavi

NEO-PI-R neuroticism scores in substance-dependent outpatients: internal consistency and self-partner agreement.

We evaluated internal consistency reliabilities and self-partner agreement on Revised NEO Personality Inventory (Costa & McCrae, 1992) Neuroticism (N) domain and facet scores (anxiety, angry hostility, depression, self-consciousness, impulsiveness, vulnerability) in a sample of 48 substance-dependent outpatients. Low internal consistency was seen for self-rated impulsiveness (alpha =.36). Agreement between self and partner reports was low for impulsiveness (.22) and vulnerability (.24) and was modest for the remaining facets of N (.31 to.34) and the N domain score (.31).

The Preoccupation with Alcohol Scale: development and validation.

The purpose of the present study was to develop a psychometrically sound measure of preoccupation with alcohol in a group of young, heavy drinking men and to examine some correlates of this drinking style. A brief Preoccupation with Alcohol Scale (PAS) was derived that exhibited substantial internal consistency. Data from a sample of the 67 males indicated that higher PAS scores were significantly related to alcohol consumption and frequency of intoxication within many different contextual circumstances. The PAS was also related to alcohol problems after controlling for average daily alcohol c

Parental and interpersonal relationships of transsexual and masculine and feminine homosexual men.

A group of transsexual and homosexual men was examined using the Leary Test as a psycho-sociogram, and findings were compared to those from a group of heterosexual men. It was found that the fathers of homosexuals and transsexuals were more hostile and less dominant than the fathers of the control group and hence less desirable identification models. The average mothers of transsexuals were close to the ideal person in our culture, e.g., dominant, strong and kindly, and thus an imposing identification model. Heterosexual men and transsexuals, in their behavior towards their wives, on the avera

The electric blanket syndrome. A metaphor for family dysfunction.

One pattern of dysfunctional family interaction is described as a syndrome. Four case histories are presented in which different family members take polar positions on various continua. In one instance the continuum is oral communication, with garrulousness on one side and silence on the other. Another continuum is family responsibility, where one member of the family takes total responsibility and another takes almost none. The symbolic continuum is an electric blanket with hot at one extreme and cold at the other. In all cases, family therapy was performed by a pediatrician. Guidelines are d

[Psychosomatic medicine in intensive care units (author's transl)].

Psychosomatic medicine in intensive care units is essentially characterized by problems arising from the emotional involvement of the intensive care unit team. That is why the functions of a psychosomaticist are not only the diagnostics of psychosyndromes and the psychotherapy of dangerously ill patients, but especially the study of psychological interrelations within the unit team. Hypochondriac depressive psychosyndromes caused by the experience of dread, confusion, exhaustion and communication problems, as well as psychosyndromes characterized by a reduction of consciousness and orientation

Do therapists' subjective variables impact on psychodynamic psychotherapy outcomes? A systematic literature review.

BACKGROUND: Despite growing attention to the general therapist effects in a wide range of clinical settings, little is known about the individual, cross-situational, and therapy-nonspecific variables that impact on the differential effectiveness of clinicians. The current study is a systematic review of the evidence relating to the influence of therapist's subjective characteristics on outcomes of psychodynamic psychotherapies. METHOD: A multistage and systematic search of articles published between 1987 and 2017 identified 30 relevant studies, which were organized into 6 areas according to t

School Relational Environment and Adolescent Depressive Symptoms: Insights from Latent Profile and Network Analysis.

Grounded in the bioecological model, this study examined depressive symptom profiles and their links with school relational factors (teacher-student relationships, home-school relationships, peer friendships, and bullying victimization) among 3,837 Chinese adolescents (Mage = 14.71 years; SDage = 1.42; 51.7% female). Latent profile analysis of depressed affect, somatic and retarded activity, interpersonal problems, and lack of positive affect identified four groups: low depression risk (LDR, 68.5%), moderate depression risk with low interpersonal problems (MDR-LIP, 11.6%), moderate depression

Emotion regulation difficulties in trauma survivors: the role of trauma type and PTSD symptom severity.

Two different hypotheses regarding the relationship between emotion regulation and PTSD are described in the literature. First, it has been suggested that emotion regulation difficulties are part of the complex sequelae of early-onset chronic interpersonal trauma and less common following late-onset or single-event traumas. Second, PTSD in general has been suggested to be related to emotion regulation difficulties. Bringing these two lines of research together, the current study aimed to investigate the role of trauma type and PTSD symptom severity on emotion regulation difficulties in a large

Multidimensional resiliency factors and psychopathology after acute trauma: Results from a prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Preventing posttraumatic psychopathology (e.g., depression or posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD]) following an acute traumatic event requires attention to modifiable factors that may protect against such psychopathology. In this study, we aimed to identify the relative contributions of resiliency factors across multiple domains to posttraumatic psychopathology and to delineate subcomponents that may be most influential. METHOD: This study leveraged prospective data from 2,043 trauma-exposed individuals recruited from emergency departments in the Advancing Understanding of RecOver

Condition-specific changes in gaze allocation following gaze-triggered interpersonal-distance outcomes.

Interpersonal distance is a fundamental social cue, yet it remains unclear whether repeated exposure to gaze-triggered approach or recede animations is associated with subsequent gaze allocation. This study examined whether such gaze-triggered changes in apparent interpersonal distance were associated with changes in dwell-time allocation toward face stimuli. Fifty adults completed two within-subject blocks (Approach vs. Recede), each consisting of Baseline, Training, and Test phases. During Training, fixating a designated face for a gaze-duration threshold triggered a predefined approach or r

Evaluating Impacts of Racism in Academic Departments on the Mental Health of Global Majority Students in the Midwest.

Despite increasing racial diversity in higher education in the United States (US), racially minoritized students (i.e., students from the Global Majority; GM) continue to experience stress related to discrimination and structural oppression. Evaluating and addressing racism in higher education across multiple levels (e.g., distal and proximal) is critical to student success. This study tested two complementary approaches to understand associations between departmental racism and GM students' mental health. First, Hatzenbuehler's Psychological Mediation Minority Stress Theory was tested by exam

How do victims of bullying develop depression? Testing interpersonal style to explain the victimization-depression link.

This study tested to what extent the relation between bullying victimization and future symptoms of depression could be explained by victims being more hostile and less assertive than non-involved individuals. Data came from waves 2-4 of the Dutch TRacking Adolescents' Individual Lives Survey (TRAILS). Participants' bullying experiences were assessed at age 13, interpersonal style at age 16, and depression symptoms at age 19. Mediation analyses were performed primarily on 274 self-reported victims and 1498 non-involved peers. Self-reported victims had an increased risk for depression symptoms.
