The role of albumin in nutritional support.

Hypoalbuminemia is considered one of the hallmarks of protein-calorie malnutrition and chronic liver disease. Recently, serum albumin has also been proposed as a critical predictor of the response to nutritional support and tolerance to enteral feeding in critically ill patients. Albumin is essential for maintenance of plasma colloidal osmotic pressure, prevention of edema, and transport of certain drugs and nutrients. Experimental studies have shown that rapid plasma expansion and reduced plasma protein concentration and osmotic pressure induce a net secretion of sodium and water into the sma

Littre Hernia: A Rare Case of an Incarcerated Meckel's Diverticulum.

A Meckel's diverticulum is a remnant of the vitelline duct, which leads to the formation of a true diverticulum containing all layers of the small intestine. The diverticulum can contain ectopic gastric, duodenal or pancreatic tissue and is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract with estimates of prevalence ranging from 0.3% to 3%. The condition is usually clinically silent. In children the most common complication is gastrointestinal bleeding caused by ulceration due to the acid secretion by ectopic gastric mucosa.

[Intestinal bacteria overgrowth in chronic hepatopathies].

Intestinal bacterial overgrowth (IBD) is very frequent in patients with chronic hepatopathies. Causes of IBO, although not entirely known, principally are: the hepatopathy, the alcoholism and the alterations produced by these two factors, such as achylia (and above all hypochlorhydria), decrease in the secretion of IgA, and malnutrition. On the other hand, the IBO increases the severity of the hepatopathy and frequently produces a bacterial peritonitis. All these data suggest that the IBO play an important role increasing the hepatopathy severity and consequently is a factor to bear in mind.

Immunohistochemical localization of VIP and Met-enkephalin in the rabbit submandibular and sublingual glands.

The existence and distribution of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), and Met-enkephalin pentapeptide were investigated by means of the peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) technique in rabbit submandibular and sublingual glands. In the submandibular gland, VIP immunostaining was observed in some peripheral acinar cells, while in sublingual one VIP positive fibres surrounded semilunes. Ductal cells of both glands were also reactive. These findings suggested a role of VIP in regulating volume and composition of salivary secretion.

The versatility of Shigella effectors.

When Shigella infect the intestinal epithelium, they deliver several effectors through the type III secretion system (T3SS) into the surrounding space and directly into the host-cell cytoplasm, where they can mimic and usurp host cellular functions or subvert host-cell signalling pathways and the immune response. Although bacterial strategies and mechanisms of infection vary greatly, recent studies of Shigella effectors have revealed that Shigella possess a highly evolved strategy for infection.

Transfer kinetics of 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine and thyroxine from rat blood to large and small intestines, liver, and kidneys in vivo.

Enterohepatic circulation of thyroid hormone in the rat involves transfer of hormone to intestines in bile from the liver and absorption of some intestinal hormone, via portal blood to liver. Transfer of hormone to intestines from mesenteric arterial blood has generally been considered minimal, although this alternate pathway has received little attention. We have measured uptake kinetics of iv trace doses of radioactivity labeled T3 (T3*) and T4* from blood to intestines, longitudinally in 14 segments of total intestines in situ, with bowel contents included and bile duct ligated, and also to

Gastric secretion.

Overlapping neural, hormonal, and paracrine pathways finely regulate gastric acid secretion. In rats and guinea pigs, most of the intrinsic neural innervation to the gastric mucosa originates in the myenteric plexus. In contrast, human stomachs have a clearly defined submucosal plexus that contains a variety of transmitters including nitric oxide, vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP), substance P, and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP). Although GRP is known to participate in meal-stimulated acid secretion by releasing gastrin in a variety of laboratory anim

Hormonal mechanism of sodium oleate-stimulated pancreatic secretion in rats.

We have investigated the role of two intestinal hormones, secretin and cholecystokinin (CCK), on the pancreatic exocrine secretion stimulated by sodium oleate in anesthetized rats. Each rat was prepared with a polyethylene tube in the proximal duodenum and ligation of the pylorus. To collect pancreatic juice, the common bile-pancreatic duct was cannulated near the duodenal wall while bile was diverted to the exterior. Intraduodenal infusion of sodium oleate at doses of 0.03, 0.06, 0.12, and 0.24 mmol/h resulted in significant increases in pancreatic secretion including fluid, bicarbonate, and

Cooperative control of IgA synthesis and secretion by MZB1 and the J chain.

Immunoglobulin A (IgA) is the most abundantly produced antibody in mammals, with its secretory dimeric form playing a central role in maintaining intestinal homeostasis. Although the J chain is known to be essential for IgA transcytosis, its precise role in IgA biosynthesis and secretion is not fully understood. Here, using CRISPR/Cas9-edited J558 plasmacytoma cells, a mouse line that secretes IgA, we demonstrate that MZB1 and the J chain act sequentially to ensure proper IgA assembly. MZB1 stabilizes α-heavy chain-light chain complexes (HL complexes), thereby enabling their efficient associat

Histochemical and immunohistochemical characterization of exocrine cells in the foregut of the red-eared slider turtle, Trachemys scripta (Emydidae).

The morphofunctional organization of the exocrine cells in the foregut of the red-eared slider turtle, Trachemys scripta, was investigated by histochemistry (PAS, AB pH1.0 and pH 2.5, HID-AB, Bowie), lectin-histochemistry (WGA, SBA, UEA, ConA, PNA, DBA, sialidase-SBA, sialidase-PNA, Paradoxical ConA), and immunohistochemistry (antipepsin, anti-alpha-H+,K+ ATPase) to detect regional differences and verify the existence of an oro-aboral gradient in gastric juice secretion. Observations showed that pharyngeal goblet cells have mucins with terminal residuals of GalNAc and sialic acid. In the oesop

MEK inhibits secretin release and pancreatic secretion: roles of secretin-releasing peptide and somatostatin.

We investigated the mechanism of action of methionine enkephalin (MEK) on HCl-stimulated secretin release and pancreatic exocrine secretion. Anesthetized rats with pancreatobiliary cannulas and isolated upper small intestinal loops were perfused intraduodenally with 0.01 N HCl while bile and pancreatic juice were diverted. The effect of intravenous MEK on acid-stimulated secretin release and pancreatic exocrine secretion was then studied with or without coinfusion of naloxone, an anti-somatostatin (SS) serum, or normal rabbit serum. Micro/nanoplastic-mediated gut dysbiosis and its impact on cardiac and neuroimmune function in zebrafish model: A multi-omics approach.

The pervasive distribution of micro- and nanoplastics (M/NPs) across ecosystems necessitates a mechanistic investigation into their toxicological consequences. Chronic exposure to M/NPs through combined intestinal uptake and branchial contact in aquatic animals disrupts epithelial barrier integrity, alters gastric secretions and luminal pH, and induces microbial dysbiosis, evidenced by the depletion of commensal taxa and expansion of pathogenic strains. These local perturbations trigger systemic sequelae, including neurotoxicity and cardiotoxicity. Consequences on cross-species analyses demons

Neuronal selectivity of botulinum neurotoxins.

Botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) are highly potent toxins responsible for a severe disease, called botulism. They are also efficient therapeutic tools with an increasing number of indications ranging from neuromuscular dysfunction to hypersecretion syndrome, pain release, depression as well as cosmetic application. BoNTs are known to mainly target the motor-neurons terminals and to induce flaccid paralysis. BoNTs recognize a specific double receptor on neuronal cells consisting of gangliosides and synaptic vesicle protein, SV2 or synaptotagmin. Using cultured neuronal cells, BoNTs have been estab

Dipper and non-dipper blood pressure 24-hour patterns: circadian rhythm-dependent physiologic and pathophysiologic mechanisms.

Neuroendocrine mechanisms are major determinants of the normal 24-h blood pressure (BP) pattern. At the central level, integration of the major driving factors of this temporal variability is mediated by circadian rhythms of monoaminergic systems in conjunction with those of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal, hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid, opioid, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone, plus endothelial systems and specific vasoactive peptides. Humoral secretions are typically episodic, coupled either to sleep and/or the circadian endogenous (suprachiasmatic nucleus) central pacemaker clock, but exhi

A Mini-Review of Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli with a Specific Target on the Virulence Factors Controlled by the AggR Master Regulator.

Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (EAEC) strains have been linked to several outbreaks of severe diarrhea around the world, and this bacterium is now commonly resistant to antibiotics. As part of the pathophysiology of EAEC, the characteristic pattern of adherence looks like stacked bricks on the intestinal epithelium. This phenotype depends on an aggregative adhesion plasmid (pAA), which codes for a regulatory protein named AggR. The AggR protein is a master regulator that transcriptionally actives the main virulence genes in this E. coli pathotype, such as those that encode the aggregative

[Calcium homeostasis and diabetes mellitus].

Diabetes mellitus is associated with various organ dysfunctions through hyperglycemia, insulin deficiency, or advanced glycation end products, which can also cause impaired calcium homeostasis such as the reductions of parathyroid hormone secretion, vitamin D receptor (VDR) number, and 25- (OH) vitamin D-1 alpha-hydroxylase activity in the parathyroid gland, intestine, and kidney, respectively. On the contrary, abnormal calcium homeostasis such as vitamin D deficiency/insensitivity and hyperparathyroidism can cause glucose intolerance or diabetes. Vitamin D deficiency/insensitivity induces typ

Astroviruses use mucus secretion as a novel form of viral egress.

Viruses rely on coordinated host pathways to exit the cell and propagate infection. We have come to appreciate that non-enveloped enteric viruses can use both lytic and non-lytic strategies to exit host cells. However, it remains unclear how astroviruses, a major causative agent of pediatric diarrhea, facilitate this final step in their replication cycle. Because astroviruses infect small intestinal goblet cells, we investigated whether mucus secretion could enable a pathway of non-lytic viral egress. Using the murine astrovirus model, we found that virus release co-occurred almost exclusively
