AIM: To examine the long-term effects induced by treatment with the function regulator (FR-2) appliance 7 years post-treatment compared with untreated class II subjects.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The FR-2 sample was collected prospectively and comprised 17 subjects (10 boys and 7 girls, mean age 10.8 years) who were treated with the FR-2 appliance for 1.7 years and re-evaluated 7.1 years after treatment. The step-by-step mandibular advancement was performed gradually (increments up to 3-4 mm), until a 'super class I' molar relationship was obtained. The control group consisted of 17 class II subj

Ectopically erupting permanent first molars occur in approximately 3% to 4% of children, and presentation in the mandible is very rare. When the malocclusion warrants a nonextraction treatment plan in the mandible, early correction of an impacted ectopic molar with space regaining is appropriate. The purpose of this case report was to describe and document the correction of a severely impacted permanent mandibular left first molar in the early mixed dentition along with long-term results. A bilateral lingual arch was placed on the primary mandibular second molars with a Halterman-type extensio

Congenital absence of teeth, as the most commonly known developmental dental anomaly in man, has a multitude of adverse affects that could be detrimental to normal function and esthetics. This report presents a rare case of combined agenecies of maxillary permanent first molars and lateral incisors. The management plans are highlighted, and phase I orthodontic-restorative treatment mechanics and its result are described. The benefits for early orthodontic treatment intervention for this case presented here are discussed.

Facial growth is an important factor for the orthodontists in the timing of treatment of the patient with a Class II malocclusion who has a potential for retarded growth. This patient had an isolated idiopathic growth hormone deficiency and hypothyroidism and was treated during a circumpubertal growth spurt in two phases. The first phase involved a functional appliance and the second was accomplished with fixed appliances. The case report affords one of the rare opportunities to document and analyze the multifactorial effects of surgery, radiation, growth and thyroid hormones, and orthodontic

This paper reports on previously undescribed dentofacial features a child suffering from Glycogen-Storage Disease type III with hepatomegaly and hypertransaminasemia with muscular involvement. Deficient craniofacial development, reduced width of the upper jaw resulting in posterior cross-bite, and taurodontism of the primary dentition were found. Pathogenetic basis for craniofacial abnormalities is discussed. Cooperation between pediatricians and pediatric dentists is strongly recommended for an early diagnosis and treatment of the dentofacial defects of the syndrome.

The aim of this study was to develop and apply a reliable method of measuring the effects of condylar lesions quantitatively on panoramic radiographs. Three different types of machines were tested. Two dry skulls were exposed in six positions in each machine, and the relative size of the condyle in relation to ramus height was calculated. The results showed good validity for the reference points used. The head position did not contribute to the variation in the measurements, but the type of panoramic machine had some influence. It was concluded that the method may be applied when calculating c

A case report is presented in order to illustrate the benefits of computerized video imaging in orthognathic surgery. It is suggested that superimposition of the cephalogram on the video image is helpful in treatment planning and in communication with the patient. Computerized video imaging techniques help clinicians and patients discuss the aesthetic impact of orthognathic surgery. The superimposition of the cephalogram and profile image, coupled with algorithmic predictions, allow the clinician to plan the surgery to closely match the desired result. This paper presents the planning and coun

A retrospective cephalometric study was carried out to compare the vertical dental changes between patients treated with the Andresen (30), Harvold (19), or Begg (30) appliances, and an untreated control group (24). It was found that all three appliances successfully reduced the overbite although the reduction tended to be more stable with the functional appliances. Overbite was reduced by a combination of factors which varied according to the appliance used, but included lower incisor intrusion or restraint, molar eruption, vertical growth of the face and lower incisor proclination in the fun

Treacher Collins Syndrome (TCS) is a genetic disorder with predominantly autosomal dominant inheritance, associated with different mutations in specific genes. This review aimed to evaluate the facial, temporomandibular, zygomatic and bucco-dental phenotype in TCS individuals, and describe surgical and non-surgical solutions for each case in order to improve the quality of life of these individuals. A review of the literature on the craniofacial characteristics of the TCS was carried out, using the PICO strategy, and then a systematic search method was performed in Medline, Scopus, LILACS and
