Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) with TFCP2 rearrangement has been identified recently. This entity has a distinctive clinicopathologic features: a rapidly aggressive clinical course, a preference for the craniofacial bones, a spindle and epithelioid histomorphology, and positive immunohistochemistry for epithelial markers, ALK, and myogenic markers. RMS with TFCP2 rearrangement is rare and may be misdiagnosed as other spindle cell tumors. Here, we report a case of this entity arising in the mandible, which was initially diagnosed as ossifying fibroma in primary tumor in another hospital. A 26-year-old

In this clinical report, we present the management of a brain abscess that was presumed to be caused by radiation osteomyelitis of the mandible. The patient underwent chemoradiotherapy for oropharyngeal carcinoma on the left side at the Department of Otolaryngology of our hospital in 2000. Local recurrence or metastasis did not occur post-treatment. In January 2009, the patient was diagnosed with radiation osteomyelitis of the mandible on the left side, complicated by a pathologic fracture. In July 2011, numbness occurred in the left upper extremity and the patient was transferred to the emerg

Central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) is a benign, non-odontogenic bone lesion of jaw. The condition is relatively infrequent and affects mainly children and young adults with a certain predominance among females and exhibits variable aggressiveness. Giant cell lesion associated with hyperparathyroidism is known as Brown tumor. Brown tumor is one of the bony complications of hyperparathyroidism. It is a giant cell granuloma which occurs in osteitis fibrosis cystica. It represents the terminal stage of the bone remodelling processes occurring as a result of peritrabecular fibrosis and osteoclasti

Conventional ameloblastomas are rare, benign, epithelial odontogenic tumors that tend to grow slowly in the mandible or maxilla, but are locally invasive and can be highly destructive of the surrounding dental anatomy. Aggressive resection is the most effective method of eliminating the tumors, but treatment can further contribute to patient deformity and malfunction. Ameloblastomas also have a high rate of recurrence, which significantly diminishes 8 years after resection, but still requires vigilant clinical monitoring. This case report describes the complete oral rehabilitation of a postres

Approximately 5% of all malignant lesions are diagnosed as malignant lymphomas, of which 2-3% are localized in the head and neck region. After the squamous cell carcinoma and neoplasms of the salivary glands, malignant lymphomas represent the third most frequent malignant lesion in that region. Malignant lymphomas can be grouped into Hodgkin- and non- Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL) and subdivided into nodal (lymph nodes) and extranodal lymphomas. We present the case of an extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma in the left mandible of a 47-year-old woman, who was referred to our department with an unclear sw

Brown tumors are rare lesions that can develop in persistent cases of hyperparathyroidism (HPT). Therefore, identification of these lesions by diagnostic imaging is important during the follow-up of patients with HPT. This report describes a 45-year-old woman who developed HPT-induced brown tumors that appeared initially as an oral lesion. The diagnosis, treatment, and control of the disease--as well as the histopathological characteristics--are emphasized.

INTRODUCTION: In the last decade, bisphosphonates were regularly used to treat osteoporosis and bone pain from diseases such as metastatic breast cancer, multiple myeloma and Paget's disease. Currently, the influence of bisphosphonates in development of avascular osteonecrosis of the jaws has been recognized by various authors. In many cancer patients chemotherapy and medications like steroids have also to be applied. Agreement exists that these drugs can initiate vascular endothelial cell damage and accelerate disturbances in the microcirculation of the jaws possibly resulting in thrombosis o

Head and neck reconstruction after tumour ablation and radiotherapy often requires complex surgery. The need for free composite tissue transfer and the poor quality of the recipient site increase the level of difficulty substantially. We report a case in which the mandible, floor of the mouth and skin of the neck needed to be reconstructed in a heavily irradiated field. A single osteocutaneous fibula flap was insufficient to reconstruct the defect, and a free anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap was also used for external neck skin resurfacing. As the recipient vessels in the ipsilateral neck had be

The radiographical differentiation of adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) from dentigerous cysts, calcifying odontogenic cysts, calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumors, odontogenic keratocysts and amelobastomas is sometimes difficult. We attempted to differentiate AOT from other lesions similar to AOT in radiographic findings using MRI. The MRI features of AOT in our three cases included homogeneous low SI in the cystic portion and homogeneous intermediate SI in the solid portion on T1WI, homogeneous high SI in the cystic portion and intermediate to slightly high SI in the solid portion on T2

PURPOSE: Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the mandible has long been considered the most destructive complication of head and neck irradiation. Recently, therapeutic irradiation has been implicated as the cause of induced/accelerated atherosclerosis of the cervical carotid artery and subsequent stroke. Panoramic radiography, previously shown to be capable of identifying carotid artery atherosclerosis in nonirradiated individuals, was used to assess the carotid vasculature of patients being treated for ORN.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The panoramic radiographs of 61 men (mean age, 60.5 years; range, 41 t

Among non-Hodgkin's lymphomas occurring in childhood two major histologic subgroups can be identified: (1) Burkitt's lymphoma and (2) T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma, an uncommon high-grade malignant non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Although Burkitt's lymphoma with maxillofacial involvement is a well-documented disease, T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma in the perioral region is rare. An unusual case of T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma with initial oral manifestation in an 18-month-old child is presented.

Nasolabial flaps can be used for local reconstruction of moderate defects of the anterior oronasal structures. In a 10-year period 59 flaps were used in 43 patients to cover defects of the nose, lip and anterior structures of the oral cavity (floor of mouth, tongue, alveolar process). The fate of 26 of the flaps used for reconstruction of defects of the floor of the mouth in 16 patients, were reviewed. All flaps, 6 uni- and 10 bilateral, were inferiorly based. Dehiscence, which occurred twice, and loss of one flap were the main complications. The indications and the technique are discussed. Th

PURPOSE: Mandibular osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is a severe late complication affecting patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) treated with radiation therapy (RT) that significantly impacts patients' quality of life and can require costly interventions. Although radiation dose is a key factor, other clinical and demographic risk factors also influence ORN development. Previous predictive models have primarily been single-institutional, limiting their generalizability. In this first analysis from the PREDMORN Consortium, we have aimed to reproduce existing statistical association and modeling an

Ameloblastoma (AM) is characterised by local aggressiveness and bone resorption. To our knowledge, the proteomic profile of bone adjacent to AM has not previously been explored. We therefore looked at the differential proteins in cancellous bone (CB) adjacent to AM and normal CB from the mandible. CB proteins were extracted, purified, quantified, and analysed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) using samples from five patients with AM. These proteins were further investigated using gene ontology for additional functional annotation and enrichment. Proteins that met the screening

BACKGROUND: The scapular free flap has increasingly gained popularity as an alternative to the fibular free flap in osseous head and neck reconstruction. The authors evaluated its use in maxillomandibular reconstruction and examined surgical and patient outcomes.
METHODS: Osseous head and neck defects reconstructed with an angular artery-based scapular flap or fibular flap from 2016 to 2022 at 2 Swedish university hospitals were evaluated for their intraoperative execution (osseous and soft-tissue combinations) and postoperative outcomes. Facial quality of life (QoL) was assessed using the FA

We report a case of difficult nasal intubation utilizing a Pentax-Airway scope® AWS-100. A 4-month-old female with a rapidly growing melanotic neuroectodermal tumor was scheduled for resection under general anesthesia. The tumor was a large rubbery mass located in the middle of the mandible. For nasal intubation using the AWS, guidance of the tube toward the glottis was attempted using pediatric Magill forceps. Although we could hold the tube with the Magill forceps, it was difficult to insert the tube into the trachea due to the limited space in her hypopharynx. We then used a standard laryng
