Community-based participatory research and American Indian/Alaska Native nurse practitioners: a partnership to promote adolescent health.

PURPOSE: To make recommendations for American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) nurse practitioners (NPs) and university partners who are partnering on community-based participatory (CBPR) research projects. An example of a CBPR study using focus groups to assess an important adolescent health problem is used to illustrate opportunities and challenges for AI/AN NPs. DATA SOURCES: Thirteen focus groups were held with 95 participants on the reservation where the AI/AN NP was a member and working. Results indicated that a majority of the community represented in the focus groups were concerned about

Clinical impression versus standardized questionnaire: the spinal surgeon's ability to assess psychological distress.

BACKGROUND: Psychological distress can affect spine surgery outcomes. A majority of spinal surgeons do not use standardized questionnaires to assess for psychological distress and instead rely on their clinical impressions. The ability of spinal surgeons to properly assess patients with psychological distress has not been adequately evaluated. Our hypothesis was that the clinical impressions of spinal surgeons were not as accurate as a standardized questionnaire in assessing for psychological distress. METHODS: A prospective study was performed with eight physicians, four spinal surgeons and

Clinical diagnosis of depression in primary care: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a major burden for the health-care system worldwide. Most care for depression is delivered by general practitioners (GPs). We assessed the rate of true positives and negatives, and false positives and negatives in primary care when GPs make routine diagnoses of depression. METHODS: We undertook a meta-analysis of 118 studies that assessed the accuracy of unassisted diagnoses of depression by GPs. 41 of these studies were included because they had a robust outcome standard of a structured or semi-structured interview. FINDINGS: 50 371 patients were pooled across 41 s

Refusal to eat, capacity, and ethics in stroke patients: a report of 3 cases.

Patients have the right to make decisions about their health care, including refusing a particular treatment or a life-sustaining activity such as eating. However, patients must be able to understand and appreciate the consequences of their actions. Brain injury caused by a stroke has the potential to affect people's capacity to understand and appreciate their particular medical condition or its consequences. The purpose of this report was to describe the unique medical and ethical challenges presented by 3 rehabilitating stroke patients who refused to eat. Two patients had left-hemisphere str

A continuing educational initiative to develop nurses' mental health knowledge and skills in rural and remote areas.

At a time of ever increasing mental health problems in Australian society, the nursing profession is beset by problems of an insufficient workforce specialising in this area. Not only is there a shortage of suitable trained specialist mental health nurses, but undergraduate nursing programs inadequately prepare students for practical mental health nursing. Fewer students are enrolling in mental health nursing, and many nurses are leaving the workforce. A particular problem in rural Australia is that there is a lack of specialist mental health services, and nurses are being increasingly relied

Testing the efficacy of a self-guided psychotherapy intervention for infertility-related distress: a randomized controlled trial.

STUDY QUESTION: Is the online 7-week self-help Coping with Infertility (CWI) program more effective than treatment as usual (TAU) at improving mental health for individuals assigned female at birth (AFAB) who are experiencing infertility? SUMMARY ANSWER: AFAB individuals who participated in the CWI program experienced improvements in quality of life, distress, depression, and anxiety relative to TAU; these effects were large among those with poorer quality of life or greater symptoms of depressed mood and anxiety at baseline. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Existing psychological interventions are as

Implementing a Telehealth Perinatal Depression Prevention Program: Perspectives of Rural and Urban Clinical Staff.

BACKGROUND: Nurses are key stakeholders in telehealth intervention implementation. Nurses are also instrumental in the management of perinatal depression, a common complication during pregnancy and postpartum. Telehealth interventions are a promising approach to addressing perinatal depression; however, its successful integration into routine maternal care remains challenging, particularly across diverse clinical settings. This qualitative study examined how registered nurses in the United States and other clinical staff perceived and navigated the implementation of a telehealth perinatal depr

Perceptions and Experiences of Patients Across All Skin Tones Living with Psoriasis in Canada.

INTRODUCTION: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that significantly impacts patients' quality of life. Patients with skin of colour (SoC) often face unique barriers related to gaining access to care, diagnosis and treatment, which can contribute to health disparities. The aim of this study was to assess patient-reported experiences across the psoriasis care continuum in Canada, comparing white and non-white populations. METHODS: A 15-min online survey was administered between 9 December and 19 December 2022 to patients ≥ 18 years with a confirmed psoriasis diagnosis. The survey

Factors Influencing Psychological Help-Seeking Intention for Women with Perinatal Depression and Their Spouses: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Professional psychological help can significantly improve outcomes for women with perinatal depression (PND), yet many delay or avoid seeking it. Spouses significantly influence women's help-seeking decisions. However, comprehensive reviews synthesizing factors affecting both women's and their spouses' intentions, particularly regarding spousal support, remain lacking. AIM: This scoping review synthesises current evidence on the factors influencing the psychological help-seeking intentions of women with PND and their spouses. METHODS: This scoping review adhered to the framework

Psychoactive drug use among athletes: motives and risk factors beyond sports performance - A scoping review.

Organised competitive sport represents a unique socio-cultural environment in which performance demands, social influences within sport and anti-doping frameworks shape athletes' substance use behaviours. In 2021, the World Anti-Doping Agency introduced a 'Substances of Abuse' category to address athletes' drug use outside the context of sport. Athletes may use psychoactive drugs, for example, to manage sports related pressure, stress and mental health challenges rather than to enhance performance. While doping in sport remains a widely studied phenomenon, less attention has been given to psyc

Identifying Adaptations to an mHealth Alcohol Reduction Intervention for Reducing Alcohol Use in Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Survivors: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent and young adult survivors of cancer (aged 15-39 years) frequently engage in hazardous alcohol use, which can have multiple mental and physical health effects. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was 2-fold, to identify the necessary adaptations to an existing motivational interviewing-based mHealth (mobile health) alcohol reduction intervention, called Tracking and Reducing Alcohol Consumption (TRAC), for posttreatment adolescents and young adults, and to develop a tailored intervention for this vulnerable and underserved population. METHODS: This was a qualitative study

When do health and social care practitioners consider digital healthcare to be 'good care' for people with co-occurring alcohol-use disorder and depression? a qualitative analysis of practitioners' accounts.

BACKGROUND: People with alcohol-use disorder (AUD) and depression may experience a range of barriers to accessing formal healthcare; utilising digital technologies has been proposed as one way to improve provision for this population. The COVID-19 pandemic rapidly expanded the use of digital health in mental health and substance use services, which had previously been slow to implement telemedicine or m-health approaches. This study aimed to explore when health and social care practitioners, who work with people with AUD and depression, consider digital healthcare, in particular telemedicine a

Work ability during the COVID-19 pandemic: A cross-sectional study in a low-income urban setting in Brazil.

Work ability is a subjective concept that reflects the balance between an individual's perception of the physical, mental, and social demands of work and their competence and resources to meet those demands. The COVID-19 crisis significantly impacted health, work, and socioeconomic conditions worldwide. However, few studies have examined work ability in disadvantaged urban communities during this period. To analyze factors associated with work ability within the context of social vulnerability during the COVID-19 pandemic, we conducted a cross-sectional study in a low-income neighborhood in Sa

Effectiveness and acceptability of the physical exercise and dietary therapy in a healthy life center.

OBJECTIVE: The high burden of eating disorders (EDs) and limited availability of treatment speaks of a need to explore new avenues for treatment delivery. To understand if new treatment avenues are helpful and acceptable to patients, we investigated the effectiveness of Physical Exercise and Dietary Therapy (PED-t) in participants with bulimia nervosa or binge-eating disorder, and acceptability when the PED-t was implemented in a Healthy Life Center in a municipal primary healthcare service. METHOD: Exercise physiologists and one dietitian were trained in ED literacy and to run PED-t, before

Idiopathic hypersomnia and Kleine-Levin syndrome.

Idiopathic hypersomnia (IH) and Kleine-Levin syndrome (KLS) are rare disorders of central hypersomnolence of unknown cause, affecting young people. However, increased sleep time and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) occur daily for years in IH, whereas they occur as relapsing/remitting episodes associated with cognitive and behavioural disturbances in KLS. Idiopathic hypersomnia is characterized by EDS, prolonged, unrefreshing sleep at night and during naps, and frequent morning sleep inertia, but rare sleep attacks, no cataplexy and sleep onset in REM periods as in narcolepsy. The diagnosis

Prediction of Suicide and Nonfatal Self-harm After Bariatric Surgery: A Risk Score Based on Sociodemographic Factors, Lifestyle Behavior, and Mental Health: A Nonrandomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: To identify preoperative sociodemographic and health-related factors that predict higher risk of nonfatal self-harm and suicide after bariatric surgery. BACKGROUND: Evidence is emerging that bariatric surgery is related to an increased risk of suicide and self-harm, but knowledge on whether certain preoperative characteristics further enhance the excess risk is scarce. METHODS: The nonrandomized, prospective, controlled Swedish Obese Subjects study was linked to 2 Nationwide Swedish registers. The bariatric surgery group (N = 2007, per-protocol) underwent gastric bypass, banding o
