Gray-to-color image conversion in the classification of breast lesions on ultrasound using pre-trained deep neural networks.

Breast ultrasound (BUS) image classification in benign and malignant classes is often based on pre-trained convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to cope with small-sized training data. Nevertheless, BUS images are single-channel gray-level images, whereas pre-trained CNNs learned from color images with red, green, and blue (RGB) components. Thus, a gray-to-color conversion method is applied to fit the BUS image to the CNN's input layer size. This paper evaluates 13 gray-to-color conversion methods proposed in the literature that follow three strategies: replicating the gray-level image to all R

TUNet and domain adaptation based learning for joint optic disc and cup segmentation.

Glaucoma is a chronic disorder that harms the optic nerves and causes irreversible blindness. The calculation of optic cup (OC) to optic disc (OD) ratio plays an important role in the primary screening and diagnosis of glaucoma. Thus, automatic and precise segmentations of OD and OC is highly preferable. Recently, deep neural networks demonstrate remarkable progress in the OD and OC segmentation, however, they are severely hindered in generalizing across different scanners and image resolution. In this work, we propose a novel domain adaptation-based framework to mitigate the performance degra

Automated cornea diagnosis using deep convolutional neural networks based on cornea topography maps.

Cornea topography maps allow ophthalmologists to screen and diagnose cornea pathologies. We aim to automatically identify any cornea abnormalities based on such cornea topography maps, with focus on diagnosing keratoconus. To do so, we represent the OCT scans as images and apply Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for the automatic analysis. The model is based on a state-of-the-art ConvNeXt CNN architecture with weights fine-tuned for the given specific application using the cornea scans dataset. A set of 1940 consecutive screening scans from the Saarland University Hospital Clinic for Ophtha

Fine-Grained and Multiple Classification for Alzheimer's Disease With Wavelet Convolution Unit Network.

In this article, we propose a novel wavelet convolution unit for the image-oriented neural network to integrate wavelet analysis with a vanilla convolution operator to extract deep abstract features more efficiently. On one hand, in order to acquire non-local receptive fields and avoid information loss, we define a new convolution operation by composing a traditional convolution function and approximate and detailed representations after single-scale wavelet decomposition of source images. On the other hand, multi-scale wavelet decomposition is introduced to obtain more comprehensive multi-sca

Automated in-depth cerebral arterial labelling using cerebrovascular vasculature reframing and deep neural networks.

Identifying the cerebral arterial branches is essential for undertaking a computational approach to cerebrovascular imaging. However, the complexity and inter-individual differences involved in this process have not been thoroughly studied. We used machine learning to examine the anatomical profile of the cerebral arterial tree. The method is less sensitive to inter-subject and cohort-wise anatomical variations and exhibits robust performance with an unprecedented in-depth vessel range. We applied machine learning algorithms to disease-free healthy control subjects (n = 42), patients with stro

Weakly supervised video-based cardiac detection for hypertensive cardiomyopathy.

INTRODUCTION: Parameters, such as left ventricular ejection fraction, peak strain dispersion, global longitudinal strain, etc. are influential and clinically interpretable for detection of cardiac disease, while manual detection requires laborious steps and expertise. In this study, we evaluated a video-based deep learning method that merely depends on echocardiographic videos from four apical chamber views of hypertensive cardiomyopathy detection. METHODS: One hundred eighty-five hypertensive cardiomyopathy (HTCM) patients and 112 healthy normal controls (N) were enrolled in this diagnostic

Deafness gene screening based on a multilevel cascaded BPNN model.

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss is a common and frequently occurring condition in otolaryngology. Existing studies have shown that sudden sensorineural hearing loss is closely associated with mutations in genes for inherited deafness. To identify these genes associated with deafness, researchers have mostly used biological experiments, which are accurate but time-consuming and laborious. In this paper, we proposed a computational method based on machine learning to predict deafness-associated genes. The model is based on several basic backpropagation neural networks (BPNNs), which were casca

Development of a neural network model to predict the presence of fentanyl in community drug samples.

INTRODUCTION: Increasingly, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is being used as a harm reduction tool to provide people who use drugs real-time information about the contents of their substances. However, FTIR spectroscopy has been shown to have a high detection limit for fentanyl and interpretation of results by a technician can be subjective. This poses concern, given that some synthetic opioids can produce serious toxicity at sub-detectable levels. The objective of this study was to develop a neural network model to identify fentanyl and related analogues more accurately in drug

U-Net-Based Assistive Identification of Bladder Cancer: A Promising Approach for Improved Diagnosis.

INTRODUCTION: Bladder cancer (BC) is a major health concern that poses a significant threat to the population, with an increasing incidence rate and a high risk of recurrence and progression. The primary clinical method for diagnosing BC is cystoscopy, but due to the limitations of traditional white light cystoscopy and inadequate clinical experience among junior physicians, its detection rate for bladder tumor, especially small and flat lesions, is relatively low. However, recent years have seen remarkable advancements in the application of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the field

Design and Implementation of an Atrial Fibrillation Detection Algorithm on the ARM Cortex-M4 Microcontroller.

At present, a medium-level microcontroller is capable of performing edge computing and can handle the computation of neural network kernel functions. This makes it possible to implement a complete end-to-end solution incorporating signal acquisition, digital signal processing, and machine learning for the classification of cardiac arrhythmias on a small wearable device. In this work, we describe the design and implementation of several classifiers for atrial fibrillation detection on a general-purpose ARM Cortex-M4 microcontroller. We used the CMSIS-DSP library, which supports Naïve Bayes and

Increased A1 astrocyte activation-driven hippocampal neural network abnormality mediates delirium-like behavior in aged mice undergoing cardiac surgery.

Delirium is the most common neurological complication after cardiac surgery with adverse impacts on surgical outcomes. Advanced age is an independent risk factor for delirium occurrence but its underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Although increased A1 astrocytes and abnormal hippocampal networks are involved in neurodegenerative diseases, whether A1 astrocytes and hippocampal network changes are involved in the delirium-like behavior of aged mice remains unknown. In the present study, a mice model of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion mimicking cardiac surgery and various assessments

"Where does it hurt?": Exploring EDA Signals to Detect and Localise Acute Pain.

Pain is a highly unpleasant sensory experience, for which currently no objective diagnostic test exists to measure it. Identification and localisation of pain, where the subject is unable to communicate, is a key step in enhancing therapeutic outcomes. Numerous studies have been conducted to categorise pain, but no reliable conclusion has been achieved. This is the first study that aims to show a strict relation between Electrodermal Activity (EDA) signal features and the presence of pain and to clarify the relation of classified signals to the location of the pain. For that purpose, EDA signa

Neuronetwork Approach in the Early Diagnosis of Depression.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a common mental illness, with around 280 million people suffering from depression worldwide. At present, the main way to quantify the severity of depression is through psychometric scales, which entail subjectivity on the part of both patient and clinician. In the last few years, deep (machine) learning is emerging as a more objective approach for measuring depression severity. We now investigate how neural networks might serve for the early diagnosis of depression. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We searched Medline (Pubmed) for articles published up to June 1, 2023. The sear

DCNAS-Net: deformation convolution and neural architecture search detection network for bone marrow oedema.

BACKGROUND: Lumbago is a global disease that affects more than 500 million people worldwide. Bone marrow oedema is one of the main causes of the condition and clinical diagnosis is mainly made by radiologists manually reviewing MRI images to determine whether oedema is present. However, the number of patients with Lumbago has risen dramatically in recent years, which has brought a huge workload to radiologists. In order to improve the efficiency of diagnosis, this paper is devoted to developing and evaluating a neural network for detecting bone marrow edema in MRI images. RELATED WORK: Inspir
