Scratch tests with common spices were performed in 1,120 atopic and 380 non-atopic patients. Positive skin test reactions were seen almost exclusively in atopics. Curry and paprika produced reactions most frequently, and when the components of curry were tested separately, coriander, caraway, cayenne and mustard were responsible for the vast majority of the skin reactions. A high correlation between positive skin test reactions to spices, especially to curry and its components, and tree pollens, fruits and vegetables was demonstrated, suggesting that there may be a group of cross allergies. Arecoline is an alkaloid isolated from the plant betel nut, which exerts a wide range of physiological effects by stimulating muscarinic receptors. To explore the effect of arecoline on the flesh quality of fish, grass carp were fed different levels of arecoline (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 mg/kg diet) for 63 days. BACKGROUND: Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a potentially malignant, persistent, and progressive condition that is closely linked with the use of areca nut. As the prevalence and malignant potential of OSMF continue to rise, it is urgently necessary to develop some reliable biomarkers of progression and prognostication.
