Machine learning-based diagnostic models for prevalent metabolic syndrome among patients with disuse muscle atrophy: a comparative study of seven algorithms.

BACKGROUND: Disuse muscle atrophy (DMA) leads to muscle loss and impaired motor function, while metabolic syndrome (MetS) increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Muscle loss exacerbates insulin resistance, accelerates MetS progression, and creates a vicious cycle. This study aimed to develop and validate an interpretable machine learning (ML) model for identifying prevalent MetS in patients with DMA. METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted using data from 1,004 patients who visited the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at four medical institutions in Urumqi, Xin

An optimal placement model of UPFC using Hybrid Taylor series-based spider monkey-teaching learning.

Due to the inconsistent nature of the system, the power system uncertainties put forward numerous operational challenges that lead to enhanced risk. Also, minimizing the predictability of the power system makes the operational decisions becomes more challenging and undesirable. Therefore, optimal location, with the real and apparent power flow of a Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC), is accomplished for enhancing the rate of predictability and minimizing the loss. In this paper, a novel Taylor Spider Monkey-Teaching Learning (TSMO-TL) algorithm is proposed which is the integration of two opt

Inaccuracy of Wolff-Parkinson-white accessory pathway localization algorithms in children and patients with congenital heart defects.

INTRODUCTION: ECG algorithms used to localize accessory pathways (AP) in patients with Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome have been validated in adults, but less is known of their use in children, especially in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD). We hypothesize that these algorithms have low diagnostic accuracy in children and even lower in those with CHD. METHODS: Pre-excited ECGs in 43 patients with WPW and CHD (median age 5.4 years [0.9-32 years]) were evaluated and compared to 43 consecutive WPW control patients without CHD (median age 14.5 years [1.8-18 years]). An integrated evolutionary optimization and machine learning framework for predicting pharmacokinetics of nanocarrier-encapsulated drugs.

This study developed a machine learning framework for predicting the pharmacokinetic behavior of nanocarrier systems using integrated molecular, physicochemical, and formulation descriptors. A Multilayer Perceptron Regressor (MLPR) was employed as the baseline predictive model, while evolutionary optimization algorithms were used to optimize the neural-network architecture and training parameters. The framework was evaluated for predicting three pharmacokinetic endpoints: maximum concentration (Cmax), time to maximum concentration (Tmax), and area under the concentration-time curve (AUC). The

A statistical review of polygenic risk scores: from heuristics to model-based inference.

Polygenic risk scores (PRS) were initially developed as pragmatic tools to aggregate genome-wide association study (GWAS) signals for individual-level prediction, relying on heuristic strategies such as clumping and thresholding to approximate independence among variants. Although computationally efficient and widely accessible, these early approaches were sensitive to tuning parameters and limited in their ability to capture the diffuse signal characteristic of highly polygenic traits. As GWAS sample sizes expanded and biobank-scale resources emerged, methodological priorities shifted toward

Genetic Predisposition to Autoimmune Diabetes Mellitus.

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a multifactorial disease wherein a genetic predisposition, upon exposure to environmental factors, triggers seroconversion and subsequent beta-cell destruction. The global incidence of T1DM has risen in recent decades, underscoring the significant role environmental factors play in actuating inherent genetic risk. However, the absence of an identifiable unique triggering factor complicates the identification of risk groups. Advances in bioinformatics and epigenetic research are opening new opportunities for early diagnosis, prevention, and novel therapies for

Overview of Multimodal Radiomics and Deep Learning in the Prediction of Axillary Lymph Node Status in Breast Cancer.

Breast cancer is the most prevalent malignancy in women, with the status of axillary lymph nodes being a pivotal factor in treatment decision-making and prognostic evaluation. With the integration of deep learning algorithms, radiomics has become a transformative tool with increasingly extensive applications across multimodality, particularly in oncological imaging. Recent studies of radiomics and deep learning have demonstrated considerable potential for noninvasive diagnosis and prediction in breast cancer through multimodalities (mammography, ultrasonography, MRI and PET/CT), specifically f

Prediction pipeline for discovery of regulatory motifs associated with Brugia malayi molting.

Filarial nematodes can cause debilitating diseases in humans. They have complicated life cycles involving an insect vector and mammalian hosts, and they go through a number of developmental molts. While whole genome sequences of parasitic worms are now available, very little is known about transcription factor (TF) binding sites and their cognate transcription factors that play a role in regulating development. To address this gap, we developed a novel motif prediction pipeline, Emotif Alpha, that integrates ten different motif discovery algorithms, multiple statistical tests, and a comparativ

[The resting heart rate].

Assessment of resting heart rate is frequently performed and is easy, reliable and inexpensive. Heart rate is used in many algorithms to assess the prognosis of acutely ill patients. Elevated resting heart rate is independently related to the development of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and premature all-cause mortality. Adding heart rate to cardiovascular prediction models does not lead to improved prediction of vascular events or mortality. Beta blockers and non-dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers decrease heart rate (and blood pressure) and lower the risk of premature mortali

Predicting maternal risk level using machine learning models.

BACKGROUND: Maternal morbidity and mortality remain critical health concerns globally. As a result, reducing the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) is part of goal 3 in the global sustainable development goals (SDGs), and previously, it was an important indicator in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Therefore, identifying high-risk groups during pregnancy is crucial for decision-makers and medical practitioners to mitigate mortality and morbidity. However, the availability of accurate predictive models for maternal mortality and maternal health risks is challenging. Compared with traditiona
