Unusual facial pain secondary to inferior alveolar nerve compression caused by impacted mandibular second molar.

Symptoms of inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) compression are reported during endodontic procedures, placement of implants, third molar surgeries, inferior alveolar nerve block injections, trauma, orthognathic injuries, ablative surgeries or use of medicaments. Presented is a rare case of a 15-year-old girl who reported severe pain in relation to an impacted permanent mandibular left second molar, the roots of which had entrapped the mandibular canal causing compression of IAN. Timely surgical intervention and sectional removal of the impacted molar is indicated to relieve the symptoms and avoid p

Intentional extraction and replantation: the last resort.

The importance of the first molar in the development of occlusion is well-known. The difficulties when first molar is not there during the eruption of the second molar and the premolar don't have to be explained much. The construction of a space maintainer in the area of missing first molar is difficult when seven and five are not erupted. The article highlights a case where a grossly decayed first molar with repeated endodontic failures was treated by intentional extraction and replantation as a last resort. A follow-up along with indications and considerations are documented.

Comparison of dermatoglyphic traits and dental anomalies associated with cleft lip or cleft lip and palate patients with normal healthy children.

BACKGROUND: Dermatoglyphics are considered as a window of congenital abnormalities and is known to be one of the best available diagnostic tools in genetic disorders. OBJECTIVE: The present study was conducted to observe and compare the differences in the dermatoglyphic patterns between cleft lip/palate (CL/P) and normal healthy children and evaluate their associated dental findings. SETTING: This is a cross-sectional prevalence study in which dermatoglyphic patterns and dental anomalies of 90 (CL/P) and normal healthy children aged 0-15 years were recorded under standard conditions of seati

This study was conducted to assess the changes in hemodynamic, ventilator, and electrocardiograph changes during extraction procedure among 12-15-year-old children and compare these changes with anxiety, fear, and pain. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A purposive sample of 60 patients selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria underwent study procedure in the dental OPD of a medical college and hospital. The anxiety, fear, and pain were recorded by dental anxiety scale, dental fear scale, and visual analogue scale, respectively, befor

Freeman-Sheldon syndrome: a dental perspective.

Freeman-Sheldon syndrome is a rare progressive myopathic disorder affecting the face, chest, and limbs. It is characterized by three basic abnormalities: microstomia with pouting lips, camptodactyly with ulnar deviation of the fingers, and talipes equinovarus. Presence of microstomia is always associated with practical difficulties of oral hygiene maintenance and increased susceptibility to caries. Patient as well as parental counseling is important in these cases. This case report presents a 7-year-old child with Freeman-Sheldon syndrome. Emphasis is given for the dental management of such ch

Compound odontoma associated with impacted maxillary incisors.

Odontomas are considered to be the most common odontogenic tumors of the oral cavity. Some authors consider it as malformations rather than true neoplasms. The exact etiology of odontomes is still not known. Most odontomes are asymptomatic and are discovered during routine radiographic investigations. Odontomes generally cause disturbances in the eruption of the teeth, most commonly delayed eruption or deflection. The present report describes the surgical management of a case of compound odontoma in a 10-year-old boy who presented with a complaint of swelling in the maxillary right anterior re

Epidemiology of gingival recession and risk indicators in dental hospital population of Bhimavaram.

OBJECTIVE: Gingival recession (GR) is a common manifestation in most populations, and is considered as an early sign of periodontal disease. Uranium: A Dentist's perspective.

Uranium is a naturally occurring radionuclide found in granite and other mineral deposits. In its natural state, it consists of three isotopes (U-234, U-235 and U-238). On an average, 1% - 2% of ingested uranium is absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract in adults. The absorbed uranium rapidly enters the bloodstream and forms a diffusible ionic uranyl hydrogen carbonate complex (UO2HCO3+) which is in equilibrium with a nondiffusible uranyl albumin complex. In the skeleton, the uranyl ion replaces calcium in the hydroxyapatite complex of the bone crystal. Although in North India, there is a risk

Mucopolysaccharidoses type IV A (Morquio syndrome): a case series of three siblings.

Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are a family of inherited metabolic diseases that results from the deficiency of lysosomal enzymes involved in the degradation of the glycosaminoglycans (mucopolysaccharides). Despite the well-documented oral and dental findings of MPS type IV, there is not much literature documented about the incidence of this disorder among siblings in the same family. This report outlines the clinical and radiographic findings found in three siblings with Morquio syndrome.

Rabson-Mendenhall syndrome.

Rabson-Mendenhall syndrome is a rare, autosomal recessive disorder affecting insulin receptor. This disorder is characterized by insulin-resistant diabetes mellitus, hyperinsulinemia, deficiency of subcutaneous fat, acanthosis nigrican, growth retardation, coarse and senile appearance, precocious puberty, and dental prematurity, enlarged genitalia, and pineal hyperplasia. Mutations of the insulin receptor gene affecting insulin action appear to be the basic mechanism underlying this syndrome. Herein, we present a case report on Rabson-Mendenhall syndrome in a 9-year-old girl.

Eight year follow-up dental treatment in a patient with Treacher Collins syndrome.

Treacher Collins syndrome (TCS) is an autosomal dominant disorder of craniofacial development characterized by variable involvement of the craniofacial structures derived from the first and second branchial arches. Occurrence of this syndrome is relatively rare with wide variations in the clinical expression. Aspects of speech, appearance, and social well-being along with psychological issues are hampered in these patients. Treating such disabled children poses a great challenge not only in the medical field but also in the dental meadow. We report a case of a 5-year-old boy who presented with

Bacterial intensity and localization in primary molars with caries disease.

AIM: The aim was to assess the characteristics and outcomes of infections affecting the structures of carious primary molars. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty primary molars were used and classified according to the following clinical situation: With profound caries lesion, with bone loss at the furcation region, with perforation of the pulp chamber floor, and residual roots. The teeth were demineralized, cut, and stained with both haematoxylin-eosin and Brown and Brenn staining techniques. Assessment was performed using optical microscopy. RESULTS: Statistical analysis of the data by means of t

Cemento-ossifying fibroma of maxillary antrum in a young female patient.

The cemento-ossifying fibroma is classified as a fibro-osseous lesion of the jaws. It commonly presents as a progressively growing lesion that can attain an enormous size with resultant deformity if left untreated. The cemento-ossifying fibroma is a central neoplasm of bone as well as periodontium which has caused considerable controversy because of controversy regarding terminology and the criteria for its diagnosis. This case report describes a female patient with cemento-ossifying fibroma involving maxillary antrum. The clinical, radiographic and histological features as well as the surgica

Oral leiomyoma extending in retromolar region.

Leiomyoma is a benign smooth muscle tumor that rarely affects children and occurs most frequently in the uterine myometrium and gastrointestinal tract. Its occurrence in the oral cavity is considered rare probably because of the scarcity of smooth muscle tissue in the oral cavity. The most common intraoral sites for leiomyoma are lips, palate and tongue. The purpose of this case report is to present the clinical features, diagnosis and treatment of a rare case of oral leiomyoma in a 13-year-old girl with a 4-month history of a swelling in her left mandibular area extending from first molar to
