Physical and sexual abuse in runaway youths.

This paper examines the extent of physical and sexual abuse among runaway youths and the association of that abuse with behavior, mental health, life events, and parental mental health. Of 291 youths who sought shelter at homes for runaway youths, almost half (141) reported a history of physical or sexual abuse. The results emphasize the need that these abused youths and their parents have for mental health services: One in five of the nonabused youths and one in three of the abused youths endorsed parental descriptions reflective of antisocial personality and/or drug problems, and runaways wh

Maternal Caffeine Intake During Pregnancy and Child Cognition and Behavior at 4 and 7 Years of Age.

Although caffeine is commonly consumed during pregnancy, there are few reports on the association of in utero caffeine exposure with offspring cognition or behavior during childhood. We evaluated the association of maternal serum paraxanthine, caffeine's primary metabolite, at <20 and ≥26 weeks' gestation with the child's intelligence quotient (IQ) and problem behaviors at ages 4 and 7 years among 2,197 mother-child pairs. The mothers were controls from a case-control study of caffeine metabolites and spontaneous abortion that was nested within the Collaborative Perinatal Project (multiple US …

Understanding ethnicity, identity formation, and risk behavior among adolescents of Mexican descent.

The population of adolescents of Mexican descent is growing rapidly in the United States. However, the health needs of this group are not being adequately addressed by the health care system. Understanding the factors contributing to risk behavior in adolescents of Mexican descent may help improve service delivery and use. This article presents a sociodemographic profile of this group as well as a description of how one's degree of ethnic identification, acculturation, and other risk factors may contribute to problem behavior. Recommendations are provided to increase culturally appropriate pre…

Behavioral Disinhibition Model of Addiction: A Review and New Findings from the Minnesota Twin Family Study.

We provide an historical perspective on the development, empirical support, and evolution of the behavioral disinhibition model of addiction … tent evidence for shared environmental influences on child antisocial behavior and early adolescent problem behaviors. Environmental adversity amplifies genetic vulnerability, driving an adolescent onset of substance use problems while behavioral disinhibition is key to their persistence. We also present an updated behavioral disinhibition model that spans childho …

Associations of adverse childhood experiences with mental health and behaviors among adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Mental health and behavioral problems among adolescents are growing public health concerns, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) like Bangladesh. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are key contributors to adolescent mental health and behavioral problems, yet evidence from LMIC contexts remains limited. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of mental health and behavioral problems and their associations with ACEs among Bangladeshi adolescents. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 1,159 adolescents using multistage sampling. Data were col

Developmental cascades to children's conduct problems: The role of prenatal substance use, socioeconomic adversity, maternal depression and sensitivity, and children's conscience.

This study investigated the longitudinal associations among prenatal substance use, socioeconomic adversity, parenting (maternal warmth, sensitivity, and harshness), children's self-regulation (internalization of rules and conscience), and conduct problems from infancy to middle childhood (Grade 2). Three competing conceptual models including cascade (indirect or mediated), additive (cumulative), and transactional (bidirectional) effects were tested and compared. The sample consisted of 216 low-income families (primary caretaker and children; 51% girls; 74% African American). Using a repeated-

The development of preschool children's (Homo sapiens) uses of objects and their role in peer group centrality.

The ways in which objects were used by preschool children (Homo sapiens) was examined by directly observing them across one school year. In the first objective we documented the relative occurrence of different forms of object use and their developmental growth curves. Second, we examined the role of different types of object use, as well as novel and varied uses of objects, in predicting peer group centrality. Results indicated that noninstrumental object play was the most frequently observed category, followed by tool use, exploration, and construction; sex moderated the growth curve of chil

Psychological adjustment and family functioning of boys with learning disabilities.

This study examined parent reports of behavioral and family functioning for 59 boys with learning disabilities (LD) and 65 nondisabled boys (NLD) of ages 6 to 12 years. Parents completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale (FACES III). Boys with LD were reported as having significantly more behavior problems of both the Internalizing and Externalizing types than NLD boys. Individual scales yielded group differences indicating higher scores (more problems) for the group with LD on the Hyperactive, Schizoid or Anxious, Depressed, and Obse

Adult Externalizing and Suicidal Behavior in Children Who Set Fires: Analysis of a 40 Year Birth Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: Firesetting in children is thought to be an indicator of severe conduct problems in young people. However, no research has examined whether childhood firesetting is also associated with increased risk of externalizing and suicidal behaviors in adulthood. METHOD: Data were obtained from a longitudinal study (n = 1265). Childhood firesetting/conduct problems (7-10 years) were derived from an assessment of antisocial behavior. Externalizing/suicidal behavior was derived from the Composite International Diagnostic Interview and the Self-Report Delinquency Inventory. Generalized estimat

Early-life internalizing behavioral trajectories and childhood-onset asthma: An epigenetic link.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral problems and asthma in childhood are considered related despite the debatable causal relationship and unknown mechanisms. We investigated whether early-life behavioral problem trajectories affect the risk of childhood asthma and ascertained potential DNA-methylation mechanisms. METHODS: Based on two independent birth cohorts, this study included 1041 and 1647 children aged 6-10 and 6-7 years in the Cohort for Childhood Origin of Asthma and Allergic Diseases (COCOA) study and Panel Study on Korean Children (PSKC), wherein asthma was defined by a physician's diagnosis and

Associations of the Big Five and locus of control with problem gambling in a large Australian sample.

Gambling may range from being a recreational leisure activity to a behavioral addiction. A rising number of gamblers experience adverse consequences from gambling, termed problem gambling, which may become a challenge for the individual and society. With the present research, we aimed to investigate the correlates of problem gambling. We used a large sample of more than 12,500 individuals (46% male, Mage = 48, SDage = 18) from the Household, Income, and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey and analyzed sociodemographic and personality variables (Big Five, locus of control) as well as th

Substance abuse treatment for "hazardous users": an early intervention.

A six-session cognitive behavioral protocol has been developed for substance abusers who meet the description "hazardous users." This category includes individuals evidencing mild to moderate use of alcohol or other drugs, whose lifestyles are minimally disrupted, or who are displaying signs of problem use or abuse, but are unwilling to enter intensive treatment. The treatment model is nonconfrontational and is designed to motivate the individual to recognize the problems associated with his or her substance use and initiate treatment-seeking behavior. The intervention may be particularly usef
