Pyogenic granuloma is a frequently diagnosed, benign vascular lesion common in children and young adults. Treatment of pyogenic granuloma consists of removal of the lesion for therapeutic as well as diagnostic purposes. Current treatment modalities include curettage with electrodesiccation, cryosurgery, chemical cauterization, and argon laser therapy. Seventeen patients with 22 areas of postsclerotherapy hyperpigmentation lasting from 1 to 7 years were treated with a flashlamp-excited pulsed dye laser at 510 nm with a pulse duration of 300 nanoseconds between 2 to 3 J/cm2. Depth of hemosiderin pigmentation ranged from 0.2 to 2.8 mm. Forty-five percent of lesions lightened after treatment with significant lightening occurring in 27% of lesions. Four lesions in two patients developed postinflammatory hyperpigmentation after treatment. There was no significant difference in treatment response to pigment location or laser energy.

Hypoxic stimulation was added to local therapy of periodontitis in 26 adolescents with the initial manifestations of this condition. Analysis of the results has shown that hypoxic stimulation enhanced the body adaptive and compensatory potentialities, was conductive to recovery of the disordered oxygen metabolism and normalization of the regional hemodynamics and periodontal microcirculation.

A new technique of hyperopic correction similar to radial thermokeratoplasty is presented. A pulsed Holmium:YAG laser was used, emitting a wavelength of 2.06 microns. The laser light was guided by a quartz fiber and focused by means of a handpiece. Eight of 16 coagulations located on rings concentric to the pupil resulted in central corneal steepening. The amplitudes of the EPs during monopolar and bipolar stimulation of the acoustic nerve were analysed in the cat auditory cortex. Increasing number of trains of 0.2 and 0.5 msec duration of short (5 mu sec) electric pulses were delivered to the streptomycin-damaged cochlea. The comparison of the two types of stimulation revealed a larger dynamic range and a higher increase in the amplitude at the bipolar stimulation. The average value of the stimulation current was lower for the monopolar stimulation.

Pulsed Doppler sonography was performed in six patients with hepatic outflow obstruction (five with Budd-Chiari syndrome and one with hepatic venocclusive disease) to assess its usefulness in evaluating the altered hemodynamics in this disease. Using pulsed-field gradient-gel electrophoresis (PFGE) we compared two fragile X (fra(X] chromosomes from individuals in families that exhibit linkage heterogeneity between fra(X) and coagulation factor IX (F9). The analysis of very large restriction fragments indicated that there is a structural difference in the interval between fra(X) and F9 near the locus DXS105. Pulsed Doppler sonography and liver panangiography were performed in 43 patients with cirrhosis. Pulsed mode Doppler findings in the left atrium were studied in 18 patients with moderate to severe catheterization-proven mitral regurgitation, four with and 14 without flail mitral valve. Atypical markedly turbulent antegrade flow in the left atrium was observed in all four patients with flail mitral valve, whereas the typical retrograde mitral regurgitation pattern of flow was observed in the 14 patients without flail mitral valve. This Doppler pattern appears to be indicative of a flail mitral valve.

To assess the prevalence of valvular regurgitation in the aged, we studied 176 apparently healthy volunteers with no history or physical evidence of cardiac abnormality. Their ages ranged from 40 to 90 (66 +/- 14, mean +/- SD) years. In this study a new pulsed Doppler spectral analysis system was used for the evaluation of extracranial carotid disease.
