Subterranean rodents spend most of the day inside underground tunnels, where there is little daily change in environmental variables. Our observations of tuco-tucos (Ctenomys aff. knighti) in a field enclosure indicated that these animals perceive the aboveground light-dark cycle by several bouts of light-exposure at irregular times during the light hours of the day. To assess whether such light-dark pattern acts as an entraining agent of the circadian clock, we first constructed in laboratory the Phase Response Curve for 1 h light-pulses (1000lux). Its shape is qualitatively similar to other

Leptospirosis has been reemerging in both developed and developing countries including Europe, where, this phenomenon has notably been associated with urban transmission. However, the comprehensive data that are needed to fully understand the ongoing epidemiological trends are lacking. In this article, we report surveillance data from throughout Europe, especially in France, to have an overview of this neglected disease in temperate countries. Our results underline the important role of wild rodents as reservoir of leptospirosis, and highlight the potential danger of a reemergence of this unde

Trypanosoma evansi is responsible for the most largely distributed animal trypanosomosis, affecting a wide range of wild and domestic animals. Its surveillance requires the implementation of standardized and reliable diagnostic tools. Although the development of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tools has greatly improved our diagnostic capacity, factors affecting their sensitivity need to be acknowledged and accounted for in the interpretation of results. The targeted gene and the primer design have already been shown to greatly affect the sensitivity of a PCR, and the best-performing sets of p

The transmission of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is influenced by climatic, reservoir and environmental variables. The epidemiology of the disease was studied over a 6-year period in Changsha. Variables relating to climate, environment, rodent host distribution and disease occurrence were collected monthly and analysed using a time-series adjusted Poisson regression model. It was found that the density of the rodent host and multivariate El Niño Southern Oscillation index had the greatest effect on the transmission of HFRS with lags of 2–6 months. However, a number of climatic

Tick borne encephalitis (TBE) is endemic to eastern and central Europe with broad temporal and spatial variation in infection risk. Although many studies have focused on understanding the environmental and socio-economic factors affecting exposure of humans to TBE, comparatively little research has been devoted to assessing the underlying ecological mechanisms of TBE occurrence in enzootic cycles, and therefore TBE hazard. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the main ungulate tick hosts on the pattern of tick infestation in rodents and TBE occurrence in rodents and questing adu

Continuous isometric microfocal X-ray computed tomography (CT) scans were acquired from an AKR/J mouse, Brown-Norway rat, and Hartley guinea pig. The anatomy and volume of the paranasal sinus cavities were defined from 2-dimensional (2-D) and 3-dimensional (3-D) CT images. Realistic 3-D images were reconstructed and used to determine the anterior maxillary, posterior maxillary, and ethmoid sinus cavity airspace volumes (mouse: 0.6, 0.7, and 0.7 mm(3), rat: 8.6, 7.7, and 7.0 mm(3), guinea pig: 63.5, 46.6 mm(3), and no ethmoid cavity, respectively). The mouse paranasal sinus cavities are similar

Echinococcus multilocularis, a tiny tapeworm (2-3 mm in length) occurs in the small intestine of red foxes and raccoon dogs in Poland. Small rodents, intermediate hosts of the tapeworm can ingest parasite eggs excreted in faeces by final host. Humans can become infected by accidental ingestion of the eggs. The resulting disease, alveolar echinococcosis, potentially lethal zoonosis, typically presents as an infiltrative tumor-like growth in the liver, which may invade neighbouring organs. The objective of the study was to determine intermediate host species for E. multilocularis in Poland. Duri

Two captive agoutis (Dasyprocta mexicana) died of anemia with centrilobular hepatocellular necrosis (2/2), severe flea ectoparasitism (2/2), and cardiomegaly attributed to anemia (1/2). Other agoutis were similarly parasitized and one had anemia. Fleas were manually removed and all agoutis treated topically with propoxur and selamectin and moved to another enclosure. No additional cases of fatal anemia were seen. Cutaneous lesions suggestive of hypersensitivity were observed in three additional agoutis with dorsal alopecia (3/3), a penetrating wound associated with pruritus and self-mutilation

A study was designed to test the insect development inhibitors fluazuron and lufenuron for the control of fleas on sylvatic rodents as an adjunct to the control of plague. Historical data of flea burden from 15 prior years of study at Chuchupate Campground, Ventura County, CA, were compared to six years of treatment period data to determine if fluazuron and lufenuron were effective in controlling flea densities. The insect development inhibitors, delivered systemically via a feed cube, reduced flea loads effectively on California ground squirrels (Spermophilus beecheyi), long-eared woodrats (N

Extraocular muscle is fundamentally distinct from other skeletal muscles. Here, we review the biological organization of the extraocular muscles with the intent of understanding this novel muscle group in the context of oculomotor system function. The specific objectives of this review are threefold. The first objective is to understand the anatomic arrangement of the extraocular muscles and their compartmental or layered organization in the context of a new concept of orbital mechanics, the active pulley hypothesis. The second objective is to present an integrated view of the morphologic, cel

The distribution and abundance of Borrelia burgdorferi, including human Lyme disease strains, is a function of its interactions with vertebrate species. We present a mathematical model describing important ecologic interactions affecting the distribution and abundance of B. burgdorferi strains, marked by the allele at the outer surface protein C locus, in Ixodes scapularis ticks, the principal vector. The frequency of each strain in ticks can be explained by the vertebrate species composition, the density of each vertebrate species, the number of ticks that feed on individuals of each species,

In the present work features of tick-bite lesions were evaluated in capybaras naturally infested with Amblyomma cajennense and Amblyomma dubitatum ticks. Gross appearance of tick bite site was characterized by a mild swelling and erythema. Microscopic examination revealed the cement cone, a tube-like homogenous eosinophilic mass penetrating deep into the dermis. This structure was surrounded in the dermis by a cellular infiltrate and free eosinophilic granules and was associated to edema of variable intensity. Necrosis was a common feature deep in the dermis particularly at the far end of the

In order to elucidate the host animals of scrub typhus in Shandong Province, epidemiological studies on host rodents of the autumn-winter type scrub typhus were carried out from 1995 to 2002 at four localities in the Shandong Province. Based upon ecological observations of the composition, seasonal fluctuation of animal hosts, isolation of Orientia tsutsugamushi, detection and identification of serotypes of antibodies to O. tsutsugamushi were conducted. Two thousand eight hundred and eighty-four rodents and insectivores were captured, including 2,055 Apodemus agrarius (71.26%), 408 Cricetulus

The paper presents the data of an epidemiological investigation on the outbreak incidence of leptospirosis in the Ulyanovsk Region. One hundred and forty-one recording forms under No. 171/y filled in for patients with leptospirosis have been examined. All the outbreaks have been found to be of seasonal nature (June to August) and to show an aqueous transmission of infection. The occupational nature of the disease was absent among the patients.

Babesiosis is a world-wide distributed protozoal zoonosis, and Babesia spp. are the most ubiquitous of the blood parasites of mammals, except the trypanosomes. The tick-transmitted protozoa infect various vertebrate reservoir hosts, like rodents, cattle and horses. Approximately 100 million cattle is exposed to the disease. In tropical and subtropical regions the infection causes considerable losses in livestock industry, but clinical cases of human babesiosis in these areas have not certainly been identified. In 1957, the first case of human babesiosis in an asplenic Yugoslav farmer was repor

Sixteen species of ectoparasites were collected from 50 wild rodents, from August 1990 to August 1991, in an area of Araucaria augustifolia forest, in the municipality of Tijucas do Sul, State of Paraná, Brazil. Ectoparasites infested 98% of the rodents, with the highest indices of infestation found in the drycool season. Species that occurred in single or multiple infestations were recorded. Ectoparasite/host associations were significant (p < 0.01) for Gigantolaelaps wolffsohni/Oryzomys nigripes, Polygenis pradoi/Oxymycterus sp. and Amblyopinus sp./Oxymycterus sp. The activity in burrows at four different sites was calculated, and it went from 80 to 98% during pretreatment. For the first time in our country, average values of days/deaths of synanthropic rodents in natural conditions were obtained, and the reached values were between 16.50 and 19.06 after applying the biorodenticide. In the statistical analysis, a significant difference was found in the set of objectives related with days/deaths averages (H = 8.60*; p < 0.05). Moreover, no significant differences were found in percentages of residual activity in burrows (G = 8,27; p < 0.05). Results obta

Two competing views have been expressed to explain ectoparasite speciation patterns, one emphasizing co-speciation and one emphasizing host-switching. Though recent authors preferred a combination of these views, the available phylogenetic trees cannot be interpreted without revisiting island biogeography theory. Parasite extinction due to a temporal decline in host population size seems to be a prerequisite of subsequent speciation by host-switch. The need for a re-evaluation of "stragglers" (ectoparasites found on non-specific hosts) is emphasized.
