Reporting of determinants of health inequities and participant characteristics in randomized controlled trials of juvenile idiopathic arthritis in Canada: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) is the most common form of childhood inflammatory arthritis. The disease burden of JIA is substantial as patients require specialized medical practitioners for diagnosis and chronic treatments that are both costly and time intensive. Discrepancies in access to care due to health inequities such as socioeconomic status or geographic location may lead to vastly different health outcomes. As research informs advances in care, is important to consider inclusion and diversity in JIA research. METHODS: We reviewed and synthesized randomized controlled

Duloxetine versus 'active' placebo, placebo or no intervention for major depressive disorder; a protocol for a systematic review of randomised clinical trials with meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis.

BACKGROUND: Major depression significantly impairs quality of life, increases the risk of suicide, and poses tremendous economic burden on individuals and societies. Duloxetine, a serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, is a widely prescribed antidepressant. The effects of duloxetine have, however, not been sufficiently assessed in earlier systematic reviews and meta-analyses. METHODS/DESIGN: A systematic review will be performed including randomised clinical trials comparing duloxetine with 'active' placebo, placebo or no intervention for adults with major depressive disorder. Study protocol of a randomized control trial on the effectiveness of improvisational music therapy for autistic children.

BACKGROUND: Music therapy is the clinical use of musical interventions to improve mental and physical health across multiple domains, including social communication. Autistic children, who have difficulties in social communication and often increased anxiety, tend to show a strong preference for music, because it can be structured and systematic, and therefore more predictable than social interaction. This makes music therapy a promising medium for therapeutic support and intervention. Previous clinical trials of music therapy compared to traditional therapy for autistic children have shown en

[Effects of Motivational Interview and Mobile Social Network Support on Smoking Cessation in Male Patients With Coronary Heart Disease].

BACKGROUND: Patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) who quit smoking exhibit lower rates of heart attack recurrence and mortality than their peers who continue smoking. However, most male patients with CHD resume smoking after hospital discharge. PURPOSE: To explore the effectiveness of motivational interventions and mobile social network support on smoking cessation and other predictors of smoking cessation in male patients with CHD. METHODS: An experimental design was used, and a convenience sample was recruited from a cardiology ward of a hospital in northern Taiwan. The participants w

Effectiveness of an integrated multidisciplinary geriatric rehabilitation programme for older persons with stroke: a multicentre randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Almost half of the stroke patients admitted to geriatric rehabilitation has persisting problems after discharge. Currently, there is no evidence based geriatric rehabilitation programme available for older stroke patients, combining inpatient rehabilitation with adequate ambulatory aftercare in the community. Therefore, we developed an integrated multidisciplinary rehabilitation programme that includes aftercare for older persons with stroke. We evaluated the effectiveness of this newly developed rehabilitation programme in comparison to usual care. METHODS: A multicentre randomis

Association between Sensation-Seeking Behaviors and Concussion-Related Knowledge, Attitudes, Perceived Norms, and Care-Seeking Behaviors among Collegiate Student-Athletes.

There are limited data connecting personality and behavioral tendencies and traits related to concussion care-seeking/disclosure behaviors and minimal research exists surrounding the relationship between risky behaviors, sensation-seeking, and concussion-related outcomes. This study examined the association between sensation-seeking and a student-athlete's concussion-related knowledge, attitudes, perceived social norms, and concussion care-seeking/disclosure behaviors (intention to disclose concussion symptoms, perceived control over symptom disclosure, self-removal from play due to concussion

Does heroin-assisted treatment reduce crime? A review of randomized-controlled trials.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) conclude that heroin-assisted-treatment (HAT) has a larger benefit-cost ratio than oral methadone because HAT more reliably and substantially reduces participants' criminal activity. This review: (1) summarizes results from RCTs concerning the comparative effectiveness of HAT for reducing criminal activity and (2) examines the role of different mechanisms for explaining changes in crime. DESIGN: Systematic search of five databases for RCTs evaluating comparative effectiveness of HAT on participant crime outcomes and potential me

The prevalence of foot problems in older women: a cause for concern.

BACKGROUND: Painful feet are an extremely common problem amongst older women. Such problems increase the risk of falls and hamper mobility. The aetiology of painful and deformed feet is poorly understood. METHODS: Data were obtained during a pilot case-control study about past high heel usage in women, in relation to osteoarthritis of the knee. A total of 127 women aged 50-70 were interviewed (31 cases, 96 controls); case-control sets were matched for age. The following information was obtained about footwear: (1) age when first wore shoes with heels 1, 2 and 3 inches high; (2) height of heel

Participatory development and implementation of inclusive digital health communication on COVID-19 with homeless people.

INTRODUCTION: People experiencing homelessness (PEH) are disproportionally affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The realities of their daily lives have been given little consideration in the pandemic response. They are not represented in existing health information campaigns, and many are structurally excluded from digital information. The project aimed to develop inclusive COVID-19-information material to strengthen infection prevention and control of PEH. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a participatory process, PEH were involved in the planning, production, and evaluation of poster and video informa

The impact of social inequalities on cancer incidence and mortality in a Brazilian City: Data from the population-based cancer registry.

BACKGROUND: Cancer represents one of the leading global public health challenges, with its burden shaped not only by biological factors but also by social and economic inequalities. In Brazil, even municipalities with a very high Human Development Index (HDI) exhibit persistent disparities. This study assessed temporal changes in cancer incidence, mortality, and social inequalities in Campinas, São Paulo State, Brazil. METHODS: A repeated cross-sectional study was conducted using incidence and mortality rates of the most frequent neoplasms among men and women residing in Campinas, SP, Brazil

Algorithm for the Retrospective Diagnostic Assessment of ICD-10, ICD-11, and DSM-5 ADHD Symptoms in Primary School Reports Abstract: According to the German S3 guideline, diagnosing attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) requires evidence of symptom onset during childhood. This poses a particular challenge when assessing adolescents and young adults. Primary school reports can provide valuable information about earlier patterns of work and social behavior, thereby allowing a retrospective assessment of ADHD-related symptoms - specifically inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. First report of the isolation, characterization, and genotyping of Brucella abortus biovar 9 in Brazil.

Brucellosis is a globally important zoonosis that causes significant economic and social losses due to its impact on livestock productivity and the risk of human infection. Given its importance, the characterization of field isolates at the species, biovar, and genotypic levels allows for the tracking of potential new sources of infection and the introduction of new strains into a given region or herd. This study aimed to phenotypically and genotypically characterize three field isolates of Brucella abortus biovar 9 and to sequence their genomes for public availability in a genomic database. T

Adapting and Implementing an Evidence-Based Reentry Intervention for Incarcerated Transgender Women: Lessons Learned.

Incarceration is a significant public health issue that disproportionately impacts transgender (trans) women, particularly those of color. The cycle of incarceration interacts with high levels of substance use, mental illness, and HIV to produce a high disease burden among trans women, but, to date, there are no published studies of trans-specific reentry support interventions. Informed by the Model of Gender Affirmation, we systematically adapted and pilot tested the evidence-based Project START intervention to create Girlfriends Connect (GC), a reentry support intervention for trans women in

Dissociation between two aspects of procedural learning in Tourette syndrome: Enhanced statistical and impaired sequence learning.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a childhood-onset neurodevelopmental disorder that primarily affects the cortico-basal ganglia-thalamo-cortical (CBGTC) circuitry and is characterized by motor and vocal tics. Previous studies have found enhancement in procedural memory, which depends on the CBGTC circuitry and plays an important role in the learning and processing of numerous motor, social, and cognitive skills and habits. Based on these studies, procedural hyperfunctioning in TS has been proposed. However, the neurocognitive mechanism underlying such hyperfunctioning is poorly understood. Here, we i
