Phosphorous-enriched knitting aryl network polymer for the rapid and effective adsorption of aromatic compounds.

A phosphorous-enriched knitting aryl network polymer (named as Ph-PPh3-KAP) was fabricated by one-step crosslinking between triphenylphosphine and benzene, with formaldehyde dimethyl acetal as an external crosslinker. The Ph-PPh3-KAP had a large surface area and good physicochemical stability. Its adsorption performance for aromatic organic compounds was evaluated by using some dyes and benzene ring-containing compounds as the model adsorbates. The results exhibited that it had a rapid and effective adsorption for the aromatic organic compounds due to the hydrogen bonding and polar interaction

Phage applications for improving food safety and infection control in Egypt.

AIMS: The study investigated the use of bacteriophages to control bacterial contamination of chicken skin, eggs, tomatoes and meat. METHODS AND RESULTS: Experiments were performed to test the host ranges and killing potential of two isolated phages, ZCSE1 and ZCEC1, with hosts Salmonella and Escherichia coli respectively. The efficacy of both phages was determined by comparing the viable counts of recovered bacteria from treatment and phage-free control samples. In vitro experiments showed that phage ZCSE1 was able to reduce the numbers of Salmonella enterica ATCC 25566 to below 4·0 log10 CFU

Dietary lycopene intake and risk of prostate cancer defined by ERG protein expression.

BACKGROUND: There is limited evidence that supports etiologically distinct molecular subtypes of prostate cancer, the identification of which may improve prevention. Given their antioxidant properties, we hypothesized that lycopene and tomato sauce may be especially protective against diseases harboring the common gene fusion transmembrane protease, serine 2 (TMPRSS2):v-ets avian erythroblastosis virus E26 oncogene homolog (ERG). OBJECTIVE: We aimed to examine associations between estimated lycopene and tomato sauce intake and the risk of prostate cancer defined by ERG protein expression subt

The tomato UV-damaged DNA-binding protein-1 (DDB1) is implicated in pathogenesis-related (PR) gene expression and resistance to Agrobacterium tumefaciens.

Plants defend themselves against potential pathogens via the recognition of pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs). However, the molecular mechanisms underlying this PAMP-triggered immunity (PTI) are largely unknown. In this study, we show that tomato HP1/DDB1, coding for a key component of the CUL4-based ubiquitin E3 ligase complex, is required for resistance to Agrobacterium tumefaciens. We found that the DDB1-deficient mutant (high pigment-1, hp1) is susceptible to nontumorigenic A. tumefaciens. The efficiency of callus generation from the hp1 cotyledons was extremely low as a resul

Allergic hypersensitivity to cannabis in patients with allergy and illicit drug users.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis is the illicit drug most widely used by young people in high-income countries. Allergy symptoms have only occasionally been reported as one of the adverse health effects of cannabis use. OBJECTIVES: To study IgE-mediated response to cannabis in drug users, atopic patients, and healthy controls. METHODS: Asthmatic patients sensitised to pollen, and all patients sensitised to tobacco, tomato and latex, considered as cross-reacting allergens, were selected from a data base of 21,582 patients. Drug users attending a drug-rehabilitation clinic were also included. Controls wer

Molecular, biochemical, and organismal analyses of tomato plants simultaneously attacked by herbivores from two feeding guilds.

Previous work identified aphids and caterpillars as having distinct effects on plant responses to herbivory. We sought to decipher these interactions across different levels of biological organization, i.e., molecular, biochemical, and organismal, with tomato plants either damaged by one 3rd-instar beet armyworm caterpillar (Spodoptera exigua), damaged by 40 adult potato aphids (Macrosiphum euphorbiae), simultaneous damaged by both herbivores, or left undamaged (controls). After placing insects on plants, plants were transferred to a growth chamber for 5 d to induce a systemic response. Subseq

Up-regulating arginase contributes to amelioration of chilling stress and the antioxidant system in cherry tomato fruits.

BACKGROUND: Arginase, which plays an important role in regulating the metabolism of L-arginine (Arg) in mammalian cells, has been reported to be involved in stress responses in higher plants. In view of the well-established roles of polyamines, nitric oxide and proline in plant tolerance to chilling stress, arginase may play an important role in fruit chilling tolerance by regulating the metabolism of Arg. However, the current information available on this is very limited. RESULTS: Cherry tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum cv.Messina) at the mature green stage were treated with Arg or N(ω)--hy

The cumulative effect of three decades of phosphogypsum amendments in reclaimed marsh soils from SW Spain: (226)Ra, (238)U and Cd contents in soils and tomato fruit.

Phosphogypsum (PG), a by-product of the phosphate fertiliser industries, has been applied as soil amendment to reduce Na saturation in soils, as in the reclaimed marsh area from SW Spain, where available PG has a typical fingerprint of 710+/-40 Bq kg(-1) of (226)Ra, 165+/-15 Bq kg(-1) of (238)U and 2.8+/-0.4 mg kg(-1) of Cd. This work was focussed on the cumulative effects of PG amendments on the enrichment of these pollutants in cultivated soils and plants (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill L.) from the area studied, where PG has been applied since 1978 at recommended rates of 20-25 Mg ha(-1) ever

Effect of potato on acid-base and mineral homeostasis in rats fed a high-sodium chloride diet.

Excessive dietary NaCl in association with a paucity of plant foods, major sources of K alkaline salts, is a common feature in Western eating habits which may lead to acid-base disorders and to Ca and Mg wasting. In this context, to evaluate the effects of potato, rich in potassium citrate, on acid-base homeostasis and mineral retention, Wistar rats were fed wheat starch (WS) or cooked potato (CP) diets with a low (0.5 %) or a high (2 %) NaCl content during 3 weeks. The replacement of WS by CP in the diets resulted in a significant urinary alkalinisation (pH from 5.5 to 7.3) parallel to a rise

Effects of xylitol and carbohydrate diets on dental caries, dentine formation and mineralization in young rats.

Female Wistar rats were weaned at the age of 3 weeks and fed for 7 weeks either a high-sucrose diet, a non-cariogenic raw potato-starch diet, a high-sucrose diet with 5% xylitol supplement, a raw potato-starch diet with 5% xylitol supplement or a non-cariogenic, commercial, powdered rat food (Ewos R3) for reference. A low xylitol concentration reduced the progression and severity of carious lesions but did not affect dentine apposition or the width of predentine in rats fed high-carbohydrate diets. Widening of the predentine zone in rats fed a high-sucrose diet might reflect disturbed minerali

First Report of Potato Tuber Necrotic Ringspot Disease Caused by PVYNTN in Portugal.

During the last 2 years, potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) tubers displaying superficial necrotic arcs and rings were found in central Portugal. These symptoms increased during storage, and diminished tuber quality of ware (fresh-market) potatoes; however, no internal necrosis, which is typical for infections caused by tobacco rattle virus or potato mop top virus, was observed. The symptoms led to the preliminary diagnosis of potato tuber ringspot disease (PTNRD), caused by a tuber necrosis (TN)-inducing isolate of the tobacco veinal necrosis strain group of potato virus Y (PVYN) that was named PV…

First Report of the Pale Cyst Nematode, Globodera pallida, in the United States.

In 2006, a cyst nematode was discovered in tare dirt at a potato (Solanum tuberosum) processing facility in eastern Idaho. The nematode was found during a routine survey conducted jointly by the Idaho State Department of Agriculture and the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service through the Cooperative Agricultural Pest Survey program. Extensive additional sampling from two suspect fields led to the identification of the same nematode in a 45-acre (18.2-ha) field located in northern Bingham County. The morphology of cysts and second-stage juveniles and molecular analyses established t…

Machine Learning-Based Prediction of Beef Tomato Exocarp Firmness Using Physicochemical and Mineral Nutrient Profiles.

Tomato exocarp firmness (TEF) is an important mechanical quality parameter that directly affects postharvest handling, transportation, storage stability, and industrial processing performance. Conventional firmness determination methods are generally destructive, time-consuming, and unsuitable for rapid food quality monitoring systems. This study investigated the relationship between physicochemical composition and TEF and developed machine learning-based models for data-driven firmness prediction. A total of 163 beef tomato samples were analyzed using 11 physicochemical and mineral nutrient v

3-Methyl pentanoic acid suppress gray mold disease potentially targeting cell-wall integrity (CWI) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways in Botrytis cinerea.

BACKGROUND: Botrytis cinerea, a notorious fungal pathogen, is responsible for causing grey mold in fruits and vegetables during the postharvest period. The use of environmentally friendly natural compounds presents a viable alternative to synthetic fungicides for managing postharvest diseases. 3-methyl pentanoic acid (3MP), a short-chain fatty acid widely employed as a flavoring agent and in agrochemicals, has not been explored for its potential in controlling postharvest diseases or its underlying mechanisms of action. RESULTS: This study aimed to evaluate the antifungal activity and elucida
