Dens invaginatus: review, relevance, and report of 3 cases.

Dens invaginatus is a rare developmental morphoanatomical variation resulting from the infolding of the dental papilla before biological mineralization that allows the invagination of inner dental epithelium. Permanent maxillary lateral incisors are most commonly affected, and the condition is frequently bilateral, but it may also prevail in permanent maxillary central incisors. The purpose of this paper was to provide an overview of the etiopathogenesis, frequency of occurrence, and clinical and radiographic features and to discuss 3 dens invaginatus cases.

Root canal morphology of mandibular first premolars in an Indian population: a laboratory study.

AIM: To determine the root canal morphology of mandibular first premolar teeth in an Indian population using a decalcification and clearing technique. METHODOLOGY: One hundred extracted adult mandibular first premolar teeth were studied following decalcification and clearing. The shape of the canal orifice, root canal pattern and length of the teeth were determined. RESULTS: The mandibular first premolars were identified to have a round orifice (38%), oval orifice (44%), flattened orifice (17%) and C-shaped orifice (1%). The canal patterns were classified as Type I (72%), Type II (6%), Type

Reduction of the hypocone of the maxillary first molar and Class III malocclusion.

This study was conducted to examine the incidence of evolutionary changes of the maxillary molars in orthodontic patients and to investigate the association of this event with craniofacial growth. Among 4,892 Japanese patients treated at the orthodontic clinic of Hiroshima University Dental Hospital, 59 patients presented with a defect of the distolingual cusp of the maxillary first molar. They consisted of 52 female patients and seven male patients with a mean age of 14.7 years. Eruption of the maxillary first and second molars was delayed and the third molar was congenitally missing in all o

Treatment of a previously placed autogenous masticatory mucosa graft (free gingival graft). A case report.

The autogenous masticatory mucosa graft (free gingival graft) has been used to treat various mucogingival conditions. Unfortunately, the esthetics of the procedure are often less than ideal. This case report examines the treatment of an unesthetic free gingival graft. The goal was to create a result so that it was impossible to tell there had ever been a free gingival graft or any surgery performed to correct a problem. To achieve this goal, 3 periodontal plastic surgical procedures were utilized and a crown was placed. This integration of multiple surgical procedures and prosthetics produced

Growth considerations in planning treatment of avulsion in an adolescent.

Reimplantation failure of avulsed anterior teeth in an adolescent patient requires removal of the attempted-reimplanted teeth and consideration of several restorative options. These options may include a removable partial denture, as well as a transitional bridge or permanent fixed prosthesis. In all cases, the potential effects of the adolescent's expected amount and directions of maxillary and mandibular growth must be considered. A case is presented examining how maxillary growth may affect the restorative treatment options for avulsed anterior teeth replacement for an adolescent boy. Unfor

Simple approach for correcting an entrapped ectopic permanent mandibular first molar caused by poor marginal adaptation of a preformed metal crown on an adjacent primary second molar: a case report with a 5-year follow-up.

Ectopic eruption of the permanent first molar can lead to malocclusion if left untreated. Despite several reported etiologic factors and treatment options, ectopic eruption caused by an improper restoration on an adjacent tooth and a simple solution have never been documented. Case report: An 8-year-old boy presented with an entrapped ectopic permanent mandibular first molar under the poorly adapted margin of a preformed metal crown (PMC) on the adjacent primary second molar. Replacement with a PMC that had well-contoured margins followed by inserting a separating module between the proximal c

The influence of different soft-tissue grafting procedures at single implant placement on esthetics: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Soft-tissue grafting to thicken the soft tissue around dental implants was proposed to ameliorate the esthetic outcome. Traditionally, connective tissue is used as a grafting material, but a xenogeneic collagen matrix was introduced as an alternative to reduce patient morbidity. METHODS: A total of 60 patients randomly received either no graft (n = 20, NG group), a connective tissue graft (n = 20, CTG group), or a xenogeneic collagen matrix (n = 20, XCM group) when an implant was placed in a preserved alveolar ridge. Changes in mid-buccal mucosal level (MBML) at 1 (T1 ) and 12 (T1

Full Coverage Crowns and Resin-bonded Bridge Combination for Missing Mandibular Anterior Teeth.

Most often the anterior teeth and those that are visible when a patient speaks or smiles are chosen for esthetic restorations. The mandibular anterior fixed bridge often presents problems to the dentist due to the size of the natural teeth and their visibility. In addition, due to high cost factor, many patients are not able to afford fixed partial denture for missing anterior teeth. This article describes a cost effective technique for the restoration of missing mandibular anterior teeth by fabrication of full coverage crowns and resin-bonded fixed bridge combination.

Treatment of altered passive eruption: periodontal plastic surgery of the dentogingival junction.

Excessive gingival display, frequently seen in adults and resulting in short clinical crowns, has been described in the literature by several authors as "altered passive eruption." It is defined as a dentogingival relationship wherein the gingival margin is positioned coronally on the anatomic crown and does not approximate the cementoenamel junction due to the disruption in the development and eruptive patterns of the dentogingival unit. This article describes how periodontal plastic surgery can remodel the attachment apparatus, reestablish the correct biologic width, eliminate the excessive

Treatment for predictable multidisciplinary implantology, orthodontics, and restorative dentistry.

Multidisciplinary treatment has improved the clinician's ability to restore patients with partial anodontia using implant, orthodontic, and restorative disciplines for aesthetics and functionality. When considering biological principles and--in particular--patient anxiety, the use of a combination treatment approach may facilitate predictable success. When partial anodontia is evident, the primary rehabilitative options include fixed prostheses, recontouring of teeth, or placement of a single implant. This article discusses treatment planning for restoration of partial bilateral anodontia and

Residual root preparation
for socket-shield procedures:
a facial window approach.

Two common complications that occur following immediate implant placement and provisionalization procedures in the anterior maxilla are changes to the facial periimplant soft tissue levels and the facial contours. To counteract these changes, different techniques and treatments have been recommended. The recently introduced socket-shield technique (SST) appears to be a viable treatment option for stabilizing the facial osseous and gingival architecture; however, preparation of the root fragment can present challenges. This article describes a surgical approach designed to facilitate preparatio

Multiple dentoalveolar traumatic injury: a case report (3 years follow up).

Dental trauma with children and adolescents is a serious dental public health problem. Traumatic injuries on permanent teeth are common, and dramatic episodes can occur during childhood. Cases of dental avulsions and reimplantations, dentoalveolar fractures, several forms (lateral, extrusive and intrusive) of luxations, concussion, subluxation, gingival lacerations and hard, pulpal dental tissue lesions have been extensively reported. This case report presents the therapy for severe trauma caused by multiple traumatic injuries to the dentoalveolar complex of a patient.

Coronectomy (intentional partial odontectomy of lower third molars).

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the rate of infection of retained lower third molar roots after coronectomy in teeth judged to be in intimate relation to the inferior alveolar nerve. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective study of 52 patients who were operated on over a 10-year period. RESULTS: Only 3 of 52 patients had to have roots removed because of pain or infection. Postoperative findings and aspects of the surgical technique are also discussed. CONCLUSIONS: Coronectomy is a worthwhile option to extraction where a lower third molar is judged to be in close proximity to the inferior alv

Cuspal reinforcement in endodontically treated molars.

UNLABELLED: This in vitro study compared the ability of horizontal pins and a dental adhesive to reinforce the facial cusps of endodontically treated mandibular molars. Seventy-two mandibular molars were divided into six groups and mounted in acrylic blocks (n = 12). In Groups 1-5 standardized endodontic access and instrumentation in the coronal one-third of each root canal were completed. In Groups 1-4 the lingual cusps were reduced, leaving the buccal cusps intact. The facial cusps of the teeth in each group received one of the following modes of reinforcement: Group 1--no reinforcement; Gro
