Preoperative and postoperative voice analysis of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty patients.

While clinical studies almost universally report few speech and voice complications from uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, there is a paucity of prospective studies concerned with formal acoustic and perceptual evaluation of these patients. This study compares preoperative and postoperative recordings of 32 uvulopalatopharyngoplasty patients. Fast Fourier Transform analyses were made of both long-term spectra of a reading passage and the resonant characteristics of three vowels. Fundamental frequency and reading time were quantified. Polysomnographic studies of these patients were also compared. Fina

Upper airway measurements predict response to uvulopalatopharyngoplasty in obstructive sleep apnea.

Although uvulopalatopharyngoplasty relieves obstructive sleep apnea in the majority of patients, the factors that determine a successful response are not well defined. To determine whether preoperative awake upper airway measurements predict the response to uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, presurgical lateral cephalometric radiographs were evaluated on 60 consecutive patients with symptomatic obstructive sleep apnea. Patients underwent overnight polysomnograms before uvulopalatopharyngoplasty and 3 months afterwards. Forty-eight (80%) patients had a good response as defined by a postoperative apnea

[Surgical treatment of snoring by correction of nasal and oropharyngeal obstruction].

32 patients with habitual snoring and 2 patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome underwent nasal and/or palatopharyngeal surgery. 12 patients with combined nasal septoplasty, submucous resection of the inferior turbinate bones and palatopharyngoplasty gained total relief from snoring. The same result was achieved in 10 children with removal of extremes of tonsillar and adenoid enlargement. From 7 patients with nasal surgery alone 4 experienced total improvement in the snoring, 3 perceived no long-term relief. 3 adults with PPP alone gained some change in their snoring. Carcinoma of the oropharynx. Results of megavoltage radiation therapy in 305 patients.

Three hundred and five patients with oropharyngeal carcinomas received linear accelerator radiation therapy at the Stanford University Medical Center between 1956 and 1973. All were staged by the TNM system, using the UICC Classification of 1962. Actuarial five year survival for patients with tonsil cancers ranged from 50% to 18% for those with T1 and T3 lesions, respectively. Disease-free survival was higher than actuarial survival for patients with T1 and T2 lesions, reflecting an alteration of the latter curves by deaths from intercurrent diseases and second primary malignancies. Prevalence, practices, and maternal perceptions of traditional uvulectomy among sudanese children and adolescents: A community-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Traditional uvulectomy (TU) is the removal of the uvula, either partially or totally, by the traditional healer. It is prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa, driven by cultural beliefs and perceived therapeutic benefits, despite the risks of complications such as bleeding, infections, and death, and limited data exist. Our study aimed to assess the prevalence and practice of traditional uvulectomy among Sudanese children and adolescents, along with maternal perceptions, and identify associated risk factors. METHOD: A descriptive community-based cross-sectional study was conducted betwee…

Predicting the outcome of modified tongue base suspension combined with uvulopalatopharyngoplasty.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between various polysomnographic variables and the success of modified tongue base suspension combined with uvulopharyngopalatoplasty in patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). A total of 90 patients who had apnea hypopnea index (AHI) >30 and had both oropharyngeal and hypopharyngeal obstruction were included in this prospective case series with planned data collection. All patients were assessed preoperatively and at the sixth postoperative month by polysomnography. The surgery was considered to be successful when a ≥50

Pharyngeal disturbances in OSAS patients before and 1 year after UPPP.

CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that conservative uvulopalatopharyngoplasty with tonsillectomy (UPPP) did not change the degree of pharyngeal disturbances in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). OBJECTIVES: To investigate if the symptom scores of pharyngeal disturbances in OSAS patients were changed 1 year after UPPP, by using a questionnaire pre- and postoperatively, and to compare with healthy non-snoring controls. METHODS: Fifty men and eight women, median age 46 years (range 25-75), median body mass index (BMI) 28 kg/m2 (20-38), and median preoperative oxygen desatura

Effect of cisplatin exposure on platinum accumulation and growth inhibition in human neoplastic and normal squamous epithelial cells of the mucosa of the upper-aerodigestive tract.

The aim of the present study was to investigate how normal head and neck epithelial cells (NHNEC) respond to cisplatin compared to their neoplastic counterparts with respect to intracellular platinum (Pt) levels and growth inhibition. A colorimetric assay was used to assess growth inhibition after exposure to cisplatin for 72 h. Growth inhibition did not differ between cultures of neoplastic (n = 5) and normal cells (n = 5). Intracellular Pt levels, determined with atomic absorption spectroscopy were about 30-fold higher in the normal epithelial cells. The main finding of this study is that no

[Long-term results of surgical pharyngectomy (uvulo-palato-pharyngoplasty) versus office CO2 laser (L.A.U.P.) for the treatment of uncomplicated snoring].

Two treatments are habitually proposed for snoring without obstructive sleep apnea syndrome: the surgical pharyngotomy, and the treatment by laser done in the office. Our study analyses retrospectively, by telephone questionnaire, a group of 168 snorers, without obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, treated by pharyngotomy (n = 71) or CO2 laser (n = 97) between 1989 and 1993. Results after a mean follow-up of 5 years, with a minimal of 3 years, show for the two procedures the same efficacity, and an equivalent prevalence of side effects. The rate of satisfaction for the patient and her bed-partner

Comparison between short-term and long-term post-operative evaluation of sleep apnoea after uvulopalatopharyngoplasty.

For a long time uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) has been used to treat the obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS). The diverse surgical effects, the inadequate understanding of operation effect consistency, the possibility of disease progression, and the few reported papers for long-term evaluation after UPPP aroused our interest in designing this study. Fifteen OSAS patients who had undergone UPPP with pre-operative, initial post-operative and long-term post-operative polysomnographic studies were included in this study. Long-term post-operative polysomnography was undertaken more than fiv
