Hypoxia increases vertical translation thresholds in patients with unilateral vestibular hypofunction.

Hypoxia when breathing air with the percentage of inspired oxygen (% O2) reduced has been shown to diminish sensory, motor, and cognitive function. We recently showed that hypoxia experienced while inspiring air with 15.4% O2 decreased sensitivity to upward and downward motions (Z-Translations). Here, we follow-up with similar Z-Translation perceptual threshold testing in 5 patients with unilateral vestibular hypofunction. All testing was completed at an altitude of 820 ft (249 m). Each patient completed Z-Translation vestibular threshold testing with inspired % O2 set to 20.9%, 17.9%, 16.6%,

Hereditary auditory, vestibular, motor, and sensory neuropathy in a Slovenian Roma (Gypsy) kindred.

Members of a Roma (Gypsy) family with hereditary motor and sensory peripheral neuropathy (HMSN) and concomitant auditory and vestibular cranial neuropathies were identified in Kocevje, Slovenia. The illness begins in childhood with a severe and progressive motor disability and the deafness is delayed until the second decade. There are no symptoms of vestibular dysfunction. The family structure is consistent with an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance and the genetic locus for the disorder is linked to the same region of chromosome 8q24 as other Roma families with HMSN and deafness from

Unusual visual stimulation in dynamic balance conditions: proposal for a space motion sickness test.

We previously demonstrated the efficiency of normal vision/unusual vestibular cues conflict to induce motion sickness. In the present study, we investigate whether, inversely, unusual visual information/normal vestibular function conflict also elicited motion sickness. The experiments were again carried out in dynamic balance conditions to increase proprioceptive input. Circular translation of the visual field with diplopia were produced by rotating Fresnel prismatic glasses. The stimulation triggered SMS-like symptoms and dynamic balance disturbance. A positive relationship was found between

Physiological and psychological correlates of motion sickness.

Motion sickness (MS)has been inconclusively associated with personality and physical vestibular functioning in both males and females. The present work consisted of six tests: test of field dependency; pure balance test; motion sickness questionnaire; body steadiness test; primary suggestibility test; resistance to disturbance test. In addition the EPI was completed by a proportion of subjects. Male and female data for the 15 male and 15 female subjects in an age range 20 to 30 years, obtained from within Bedford College, University of London, were factor analysed separately. The results show

Novel ATP6V1B1 mutations in distal renal tubular acidosis and hearing loss.

CONCLUSION: Novel ATP6V1B1 mutations were found in a patient with distal renal tubular acidosis (dRTA), hearing loss (HL), and enlargement of the vestibular aqueduct (EVA). The deterioration of HL and vertiginous attacks may be associated with the disruption of the endolymph pH homeostasis. OBJECTIVES: To study the audiovestibular functions and to identify the causative gene. METHODS: This study enrolled a Japanese family, where the proband showed type 1 dRTA, early onset HL, and bilateral EVA. A deterioration of HL occurred several times in both ears. Vertiginous attacks were always associa

Somatosensory shift of postural control in dizzy patients.

CONCLUSIONS: Postural control is dependent on the visual system in normal conditions. Shift from visual to somatosensory dependence in dizzy patients suggests that utilizing the stable visual references is recommended for the rehabilitation of dizzy patients. OBJECTIVES: To investigate which of the visual or somatosensory system is mainly used for substitution of the impaired spatial orientation in dizzy patients. METHODS: We recruited 189 consecutive patients with or without dizziness and vestibular dysfunction. Dizzy patients were divided into three groups: acute, episodic, and chronic diz

Horizontal head-shaking test: pathophysiological mechanisms and clinical interpretation.

The horizontal head-shaking test (HST) is a simple, rapid, and non-invasive bedside maneuver that provides valuable insights into both peripheral and central vestibular function. Originally described in the late 19th century and standardized in the 1970s, the HST predominantly stimulates the lateral semicircular canals (LSCs) at high frequencies. Its diagnostic power lies in revealing dynamic asymmetries of the angular vestibulo-ocular reflex (aVOR) and uncovering central abnormalities involving the brainstem and, above all, cerebellum. The pathophysiological basis of post-head-shaking nystagm

Anterior Canal benign paroxysmal positional Vertigo following surgical Management of superior canal dehiscence.

OBJECTIVE: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a common post-surgical finding in patients managed for superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD). The posterior semicircular canal has been reported as the involved canal in the majority of cases of post-surgical BPPV, with only two cases reported of lateral canal involvement. The objective of this report is to present a case in which an anterior semicircular canal BPPV response was identified in a patient following surgical management for SSCD. METHOD: This case report presents an adult with residual dizziness following surgical m

Probable vestibular paroxysmia mimicking benign paroxysmal positional vertigo of the superior semicircular canal in the presence of a neurovascular conflict: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Positional vertigo is a frequent complaint in otology and vestibular physiotherapy, arising from functional or structural causes affecting the peripheral or central vestibular systems. Although benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common form, other etiologies such as vestibular paroxysmia (VP), central positional vertigo, or vertebrobasilar insufficiency should be considered. Recognizing the specific features and differential diagnosis of these conditions is crucial for accurate assessment. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of a 52-year-old French woman p

[Triple semicircular canal occlusion with cochlear implantation for delayed endolymphatic hydrops: a case report].

A 46-year-old female with profound sensorineural hearing loss in her left ear from childhood developed tinnitus and fluctuating hearing loss on the right side 8 years ago. Four years later, paroxysmal episodes of rotatory vertigo occurred with gradually increased frequency, lasting from half an hour to 2 hours and accompanied with nausea and vomiting. Audiometric test revealed severe sensorineural hearing loss in both of her ears. The tympanograms showed type A on both sides. The threshold of auditory brainstem response was 97 dBnHL in her right ear while no waves could be educed on her left s
