Ancient Yersinia pestis and Salmonella enterica genomes from Bronze Age Crete.

During the late 3rd millennium BCE, the Eastern Mediterranean and Near East witnessed societal changes in many regions, which are usually explained with a combination of social and climatic factors.1-4 However, recent archaeogenetic research forces us to rethink models regarding the role of infectious diseases in past societal trajectories.5 The plague bacterium Yersinia pestis, which was involved in some of the most destructive historical pandemics,5-8 circulated across Eurasia at least from the onset of the 3rd millennium BCE,9-13 but the challenging preservation of ancient DNA in warmer cli

Geo-climatic factors and prevalence of chronic toxoplasmosis in pregnant women: A meta-analysis and meta-regression.

In this study, we evaluated the effects of geo-climatic parameters and other potential risk factors on the prevalence of chronic toxoplasmosis (CT) in pregnant women. We searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, EMBASE, Scopus, and SciELO databases for seroepidemiological studies published between January 1988, and February 2021. We performed meta-analysis and meta-regression by using a random effect model to synthesize data. A total of 360 eligible datasets, including 1,289,605 pregnant women from 94 countries, were included in this study. The highest and lowest prevalence rates were estimated

Identifying correlates of Guinea worm (Dracunculus medinensis) infection in domestic dog populations.

Few human infectious diseases have been driven as close to eradication as dracunculiasis, caused by the Guinea worm parasite (Dracunculus medinensis). The number of human cases of Guinea worm decreased from an estimated 3.5 million in 1986 to mere hundreds by the 2010s. In Chad, domestic dogs were diagnosed with Guinea worm for the first time in 2012, and the numbers of infected dogs have increased annually. The presence of the parasite in a non-human host now challenges efforts to eradicate D. medinensis, making it critical to understand the factors that correlate with infection in dogs. In t

Freshwater discharges drive high levels of methylmercury in Arctic marine biota.

Elevated levels of neurotoxic methylmercury in Arctic food-webs pose health risks for indigenous populations that consume large quantities of marine mammals and fish. Estuaries provide critical hunting and fishing territory for these populations, and, until recently, benthic sediment was thought to be the main methylmercury source for coastal fish. New hydroelectric developments are being proposed in many northern ecosystems, and the ecological impacts of this industry relative to accelerating climate changes are poorly characterized. Here we evaluate the competing impacts of climate-driven ch

Landscape, demographic and climatic associations with human West Nile virus occurrence regionally in 2012 in the United States of America.

After several years of low West Nile virus (WNV) occurrence in the United States of America (USA), 2012 witnessed large outbreaks in several parts of the country. In order to understand the outbreak dynamics, spatial clustering and landscape, demographic and climatic associations with WNV occurrence were investigated at a regional level in the USA. Previous research has demonstrated that there are a handful of prominent WNV mosquito vectors with varying ecological requirements responsible for WNV transmission in the USA. Published range maps of these important vectors were georeferenced and us

Present and potential future distribution of common vampire bats in the Americas and the associated risk to cattle.

Success of the cattle industry in Latin America is impeded by the common vampire bat, Desmodus rotundus, through decreases in milk production and mass gain and increased risk of secondary infection and rabies. We used ecological niche modeling to predict the current potential distribution of D. rotundus and the future distribution of the species for the years 2030, 2050, and 2080 based on the A2, A1B, and B1 climate scenarios from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. We then combined the present day potential distribution with cattle density estimates to identify areas where cattle a

The effects of meteorological factors on hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in Yichun, China: a major Apodemus-type endemic city.

Historically, Yichun City has borne the highest burden of Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS) in China, with incidence exhibiting marked fluctuations between 2005 and 2023. Despite this, HFRS-weather associations in Yichun remain poorly characterized. We analyzed weekly time-series data on HFRS cases and meteorological factors (mainly temperature, humidity, and precipitation) from 2005 to 2023 using random forest models to identify optimal lags, distributed lag non-linear models, and generalized additive models. We identified a symmetric unimodal relationship for temperature (peak ris

A district-level ensemble model to enhance dengue prediction and control for the Mekong Delta Region of Vietnam.

The Mekong Delta Region (MDR) of Vietnam faces increasing vulnerability to severe dengue outbreaks due to urbanization, globalization, and climate change, necessitating effective early warning systems for outbreak mitigation. This study developed a probabilistic forecasting model to predict dengue incidence and outbreaks with 1-3-month lead times, incorporating meteorological, sociodemographic, preventive, and epidemiological data. A total of 72 models were evaluated, with top performers from spatiotemporal models, supervised PCA, and semi-mechanistic hhh4 frameworks combined into an ensemble.

Staple diets and duodenal ulcer prevalence.

The prevalence of duodenal ulceration in India, Africa, China and other developing countries is high in some regions and low in others, despite a high prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection throughout the areas. This variation is related to the staple diet of the regions involved. In regions where, because of the climate, the staple food is milled white rice, wheat or maize, or cassava, yams, sweet potato and green bananas the prevalence of duodenal ulcer is higher than in regions where the staple diet is based on unrefined wheat or maize, soya, certain millets or pulses. These differences

Gross primary production responses to warming, elevated CO2 , and irrigation: quantifying the drivers of ecosystem physiology in a semiarid grassland.

Determining whether the terrestrial biosphere will be a source or sink of carbon (C) under a future climate of elevated CO2 (eCO2 ) and warming requires accurate quantification of gross primary production (GPP), the largest flux of C in the global C cycle. We evaluated 6 years (2007-2012) of flux-derived GPP data from the Prairie Heating and CO2 Enrichment (PHACE) experiment, situated in a grassland in Wyoming, USA. The GPP data were used to calibrate a light response model whose basic formulation has been successfully used in a variety of ecosystems. The model was extended by modeling maximum

Marine primary production enhances removal of hydrophobic organic contaminants from Eurasian Arctic shelf waters.

Global oceans store large quantities of human-made persistent hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs), driven by the organic carbon (OC) cycle. Despite diverse organic matter composition, bulk OC is typically treated as a uniform sorbent when assessing HOC fate. Significant uncertainty remains regarding the factors controlling variability in the sorption of HOCs by organic matter. Using surface sediments across the Eurasian Arctic shelves, spanning a land-to-ocean continuum of OC, we show that polychlorinated biphenyl concentrations per unit marine‑derived OC are up to an order of magnitude hi

Global climate impact of land-surface change driven by radiative effects.

A robust proportionality between radiative forcing and global-mean temperature has been established for most climate drivers. However, land-surface changes are considered an exception due to their potential to alter surface hydrology, introducing non-radiative effects that may rival those from surface albedo changes. Here, comparing Earth-system-model simulations with large-scale perturbations of surface albedo and water availability, we find that the spatially integrated biophysical climate impact is similarly dominated by radiative processes and scales approximately linearly with the resulti

Avian migration timing advances linked to season-dependent population benefits.

While migratory species can adjust their migration timing in response to climate change, it remains unclear whether these shifts can insulate them from population decline. Here we compiled a global database pairing 4,351 population-level estimates of migration timing across 549 avian species with corresponding population trends and rates of climate change at breeding and non-breeding grounds, coupled with a full-annual-cycle theoretical model. Building on evidence for an accelerating advancement in bird migration over the past century (cumulatively advanced 13.86 days from 1970 to 2019), we sh

Global biosphere productivity response to Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation collapse during Heinrich Stadial 4.

The slowdown of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) due to ongoing climate change raises concerns about its impact on the global carbon cycle. Understanding how global biosphere productivity may respond to such changes is essential for predicting the future carbon cycle, yet quantifying past global biosphere productivity remains challenging. We use triple isotope composition of air oxygen (17Δ) trapped in polar ice cores to reconstruct the global biosphere productivity over the period 40.5 to 38.6 thousand years before the present (ka B.P.), covering Heinrich Stadial 4, a pe

20th-Century hurricanes leave long-lasting legacies on tropical forest height and the abundance of a dominant wind-resistant palm.

Projected increases in hurricane intensity under a warming climate will have profound effects on many forest ecosystems. One key challenge is to disentangle the effects of wind damage from the myriad factors that influence forest structure and species distributions over large spatial scales. Here, we employ a novel machine learning framework with high-resolution aerial photos, and LiDAR collected over 115 km2 of El Yunque National Forest in Puerto Rico to examine the effects of topographic exposure to two hurricanes, Hugo (1989) and Georges (1998), and several landscape-scale environmental fac

Interventions can shift the thermal optimum for parasitic disease transmission.

Temperature constrains the transmission of many pathogens. Interventions that target temperature-sensitive life stages, such as vector control measures that kill intermediate hosts, could shift the thermal optimum of transmission, thereby altering seasonal disease dynamics and rendering interventions less effective at certain times of the year and with global climate change. To test these hypotheses, we integrated an epidemiological model of schistosomiasis with empirically determined temperature-dependent traits of the human parasite Schistosoma mansoni and its intermediate snail host (Biomph

Pathophysiology of rosacea: redness, telangiectasia, and rosacea.

The pathophysiology of rosacea involves a large number of factors that are at times difficult to correlate. There is not a single physiopathological model. Nevertheless, today it seems to have been established that two essential factors are involved: vascular and inflammatory. The disease occurs in individuals with a predisposition, mainly a light phototype subjected to substantial variations in climate. On a background of primary vascular anomaly, external factors (climate, exposure to ultraviolet rays, cutaneous flora, etc.) contribute to the development of abnormal superficial blood vessels

The influence of seasonal temperatures on the natural regulation of the screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax, in the southern U.S.A.

The incidence of screwworm cases in Texas during the 1962-82 sterile-male eradication campaign is analysed in relation to seasonal temperatures and screwworm density. The analysis shows that screwworm outbreaks occur in response to favourable seasonal conditions, especially warm winters and cool summers. The outbreaks collapse following cold winters and hot summers. Screwworm density in autumn also influences rates of increase, possibly through a shortage of wounded hosts in the autumn-winter period. The analysis provides a simple predictive model which not only accounts for the fluctuations i

Identification of maladaptive behavioural patterns in response to extreme weather events.

Human behaviour has gained recognition as a critical factor in addressing climate change and its impacts. With extreme weather events posing risks to vulnerable communities, understanding cognitive processes driving behaviours becomes essential for effective risk communication. This study focuses on the 2018 "Vaia" storm, which brought unprecedented precipitation and wind velocity to the mountainous regions of North-eastern Italy. Drawing upon the Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) framework, we employ probabilistic models to identify distinct groups with similar behavioural profiles. By admin

Future Life-Cycle Greenhouse Gas Emission Scenarios for the Austrian Building Stock: A Systematic Approach.

Building stock modeling can be used to identify trajectories that do not exceed the remaining carbon budget and support science-based pathways. A systematic approach is used from the field of prospective life-cycle assessment, which is based on systems thinking, to develop scenarios for the Austrian building stock that consider life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions. The influential parameters of the model are identified; their interactions are classified; quantitative future assumptions are adopted; and five scenario narratives are created. A maximum emission reduction of 90% from 2023 to 2050 i
