Virtual reality-based cognitive remediation versus virtual reality control in people with mood or psychosis spectrum disorders in Denmark: a single-centre, double-blind, randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of real-life-like cognitive training programmes to bolster the transfer of treatment-related cognitive gains to daily-life functioning. We aimed to investigate the effects of 4-week, intensive virtual reality-based cognitive remediation therapy (VR-CRT) involving daily-life challenges versus an active virtual reality control treatment on cognition and functioning in patients with mood or psychosis spectrum disorders. METHODS: This was a single-centre, double-blind, parallel-group, randomised controlled trial at the Psychiatric Centre Copenhagen in Denmark. Clini…

Photography training and inhibitory control: ERP correlates and dissociable patterns from athletic training.

OBJECTIVE: Long‑term engagement in professional behavioral training and the resulting behavioral changes are known to influence human cognition. The present study investigates whether and how photography training is associated with individuals' inhibitory control. METHODS: Fifteen photographers, 15 athletes, and 15 controls were recruited to complete a Go/Nogo task with concurrent electroencephalogram recording. RESULTS: Behavioral results showed slower response times and fewer commission errors for both photographers and athletes compared with controls, with no significant difference betwee

Cognitive control and metacognitive awareness: do they shape academic achievement in university students?

Cognitive control and metacognition are important processes that significantly influence learning and academic achievement. Cognitive control facilitates goal-directed actions such as planning and monitoring, while metacognition enables individuals to effectively regulate their learning strategies. Although previous research has highlighted the importance of cognitive flexibility, inhibition and metacognitive regulation in academic performance, the interaction among these factors remains understudied. This study examined the relationship between cognitive control, metacognitive awareness (MA)

Social Determinants of Health and Cross-Sectional Cognitive Intra-Individual Variability in Adults from the Deep South Living with HIV.

Cognitive intra-individual variability (IIV) is a sensitive marker of neuropathology and is increased in people with HIV (PWH). In a sample of PWH from the United States Deep South, we examined the relationship of cognitive IIV with cognitive impairment and social determinants of health (SDoH). This secondary analysis included 131 PWH from a larger cognitive training protocol. Our primary outcome measure was the coefficient of variation (CoV). We also included the individual standard deviation (iSD), with both calculated from demographically adjusted T-scores and unadjusted sample-based scores…

Music-based and auditory-based interventions for reading difficulties: A literature review.

Remediation of reading difficulties through music and auditory-based interventions in children with impairments in reading (such as developmental dyslexia) has been suggested in light of the putative neural and cognitive overlaps between the music and language domains. Several studies had explored the effect of music training on reading development, showing mixed results. However, to date, the meta-analyses on this topic did not differentiate the studies on typical children from those on children with reading difficulties. To draw a clear picture of the remedial effects of music-based and audi

Cognitive bias modification of interpretation in children with social anxiety disorder.

Negative (or a lack of positive) interpretation of ambiguous social situations has been hypothesised to maintain social anxiety disorder in children, yet there is currently limited evidence to support this. Cognitive Bias Modification of Interpretation (CBM-I) provides a means to explore the causal influence of interpretation bias on social anxiety disorder, and has been associated with a reduction in social anxiety symptoms in adults. Seven to twelve year old children with a diagnosis of social anxiety disorder completed CBM-I training, adapted from materials designed for socially anxious chi

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction: effect on emotional distress in diabetes.

Psychological distress is common in patients with diabetes. Little is known about the impact of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), a non-traditional, cognitive behavioural intervention designed to improve stress management skills, in patients with diabetes. The purpose of this retrospective analysis was to evaluate the impact of MBSR training on mood states in 25 individuals with diabetes. All participants completed the Profile of Mood States Short Form (POMS-SF) at baseline and following eight weeks of MBSR. Overall psychological distress measured by the total mood score (TMS) and six

Individual difference variables that predict response to training in phonological awareness.

The cognitive abilities that predicted growth in response to a 12-week training program in phonological awareness were investigated with a sample of 100 kindergarten children. The children were selected from two elementary schools with historically low achievement in reading. Sixty children received training in both analytic and synthetic awareness skills, and 40 children constituted a no-treatment control group. Pretest measures included assessment of phonological awareness, phonological memory and naming rate, letter knowledge, reading and spelling, and general verbal ability. Growth in phon

Frontal brain activity assessment during basic life support skill acquisition and transfer in serious game based learning environments.

Basic Life Support (BLS) is a crucial life-saving skill, and the effectiveness of different training methods for acquiring and transferring BLS knowledge and skills remains an important area of investigation. Traditional methods, such as lectures, may be less engaging and lack the practical application necessary for optimal skill transfer. New training modalities, including serious games on tablets and in virtual reality (VR) environments, offer interactive experiences, enable personalized feedback, and repetitive practice, potentially enhancing the learning process. However, the effectiveness

First Application of a Novel Brain Template: Motor Training Improves Cortico-cerebellar Connectivity in Cerebellar Ataxia.

People with cerebellar degeneration show characteristic ataxic motor impairments. Despite cerebellar dysfunction, they can improve motor performance through sensorimotor training. Yet, how such training changes functional brain networks affected by cerebellar degeneration is unknown. We here investigated neuroplastic changes in the cortico-cerebellar network after a 5-d forearm training in 40 patients with mild to severe cerebellar degeneration and 40 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Human participants (41 female) were assigned to one of four motor training conditions, varying online vis

Are people with mild dementia able to (re)learn how to use technology? A literature review.

OBJECTIVE: There is growing evidence that people with mild dementia can benefit from using tablets and apps. Due to their cognitive decline, people with dementia need support in learning how to use these devices. The objective of this review was to identify which training interventions work best to help people with mild dementia (re)learn how to use technologies, including handheld touchscreen devices. Because the uptake of these devices in people with dementia is quite new, training interventions for the use of other technologies were also included, such as technologies assisting people in In

EXPRESS: Bayesian networks to estimate prognosis in vascular cognitive impairment and small vessel disease: integrated analyses of interdependent contributors to multiple outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) and small vessel disease (SVD) involve interconnected factors influencing multiple outcomes, also beyond cognitive decline. Bayesian networks (BNs) can help unravel these complex interrelations, which we demonstrate in this proof-of-concept study in the Heart-Brain Connection cohort, including memory-clinic patients with SVD, patients with heart failure, carotid occlusive disease, and reference participants. METHODS: We trained BNs and jointly modelled cognitive decline (Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) increase) and major adverse cardiovascular e

Elevated cerebral perfusion and preserved cognition in elite Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu athletes: Evidence for neuroprotection.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a popular martial art that exposes participants to recurrent intermittent asphyxiation due to controlled application of neck chokes. To what extent the sport impacts the regulation of cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cognition has not been examined. This study compared eleven elite Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu athletes (aged 30 ± 8 y) who trained 12 ± 6 hours/week for 8 ± 4 years against eleven cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF)- and age-matched controls. Internal carotid (ICA) and vertebral artery (VA) blood flow were measured via duplex ultrasound to determine global cerebral b

A fuzzy-based system reveals Alzheimer's Disease onset in subjects with Mild Cognitive Impairment.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is the most frequent neurodegenerative form of dementia. Although dementia cannot be cured, it is very important to detect preclinical AD as early as possible. Several studies demonstrated the effectiveness of the joint use of structural Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and cognitive measures to detect and track the progression of the disease. Since hippocampal atrophy is a well known biomarker for AD progression state, we propose here a novel methodology, exploiting it as a searchlight to detect the best discriminating features for the classification of subjects with

Cognition, Health, and Social Support of Formerly Homeless Older Adults in Permanent Supportive Housing.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Formerly homeless older adults residing in Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) represent an invisible subsector of two distinct, yet related populations: the homeless population and the elderly population. Little research is focused on the complex health concerns facing this aging population within the homelessness response system. Of particular concern is the identification and support of individuals with cognitive impairment and co-occurring chronic conditions. We collaborated with a leading housing services provider to develop a systematic screening system for case
