Computational Modeling of Neurotransmitter Release Evoked by Electrical Stimulation: Nonlinear Approaches to Predicting Stimulation-Evoked Dopamine Release.

Neurochemical changes evoked by electrical stimulation of the nervous system have been linked to both therapeutic and undesired effects of neuromodulation therapies used to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, stroke, hypertension, tinnitus, and many other indications. In fact, interest in better understanding the role of neurochemical signaling in neuromodulation therapies has been a focus of recent government- and industry-sponsored programs whose ultimate goal is to usher in an era of personalized medicine by creating neuromodulation therapies that

The contributions of Marcel Proust to psychoanalysis.

This article is about the major contribution of Marcel Proust to psychoanalysis in his seven-part novel, A La Rècherche Du Temps Perdu (translated as Rembrance of Things Past, 1934). This work spans two decades, from 1988, when Proust writing to 1927, when the last part was published 5 years after his death. Proust, a literary scholar whose knowledge dated to the early Greeks, knew nothing of Freud or psychoanalysis. His major contributions were to the emergence of memory, specifically the exquisite details of the descriptive unconscious, which we can now explain in cognitive neuroscientific t

Impulse control disorders in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The purpose of the present paper was to identify the rate of prevalence of impulse control disorders (ICD) in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and to compare patients with OCD with and without ICD with regard to sociodemographic, clinical and prognostic characteristics. Forty-five patients with OCD were assessed by means of the Structured Clinical Interview for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th edn, DSM-IV) plus additional modules for the assessment of ICD and examined using the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale, the Clinical Global Impression, the

Hypersexuality Addiction and Withdrawal: Phenomenology, Neurogenetics and Epigenetics.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Hypersexuality is now part of the DSM-V and has been defined as abnormally increased sexual activity. Epidemiological and clinical studies have shown that this non-paraphilic condition consists of "excessive" sexual behaviors and disorders accompanied by personal distress and social and medical morbidity. Hypersexual disorder is conceptualized as primarily a non-paraphilic sexual desire disorder with impulsivity. Pathophysiological perspectives include dysregulation of sexual arousal and desire, sexual impulsivity, sexual addiction, and sexual compulsivity. The nucleus accumbens, situated with

Benzodiazepines - Effects on Human Performance and Behavior.

There exist a large number of drugs belonging to the benzodiazepine family. These include the 1,4-benzodiazepines such as diazepam, temazepam and oxazepam, the often more potent diazolo- and triazolo-groups represented by alprazolam, midazolam, triazolam etc. These drugs represent a large range of potencies from submilligram doses to over 100 mg and a range of polarities. Consequently, blood or plasma concentrations associated with prescribed use range from sub-nanogram per mL to near-microgram per mL. Their medical use varies, but they are predominantly used as hypnotics and sedatives. Some m

An Analysis of Treatment-Seeking Behavior in Individuals with Gambling Disorder.

Gambling disorder affects approximately 1.1-3.5% of the population, with the rates being higher in young adults. Despite this high prevalence, little is known regarding which pathological gamblers decide to seek treatment. This study sought to examine the differences in three groups of pathological gamblers: those who did not seek treatment (n = 94), those who sought therapy (n = 106) and those who sought medication therapy (n = 680). All subjects were assessed on a variety of measures including demographics, family history, gambling history, comorbid psychiatric disorders and an assortment of

A pilot study of computer-aided vicarious exposure for obsessive-compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: This study reports the use of an interactive computer program to instruct vicarious exposure and ritual prevention for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). METHOD: Thirteen OCD volunteers and 10 non-OCD volunteers completed three 45-minute sessions at weekly intervals. Subjects with OCD completed the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS), the Padua Inventory (PI) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) 1 week prior to and 1 week after the three computer treatment sessions. Non-OCD subjects only completed these measures at baseline, allowing confirmation that they had no si

Fluvoxamine versus clomipramine for obsessive-compulsive disorder: a double-blind comparison.

The efficacy and tolerability of fluvoxamine (100-300 mg/day) and clomipramine (100-250 mg/day) were compared in a randomized, double-blind, parallel-group study of 79 patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) without coexisting major depression. After a 2-week placebo lead-in period, patients were randomized to fluvoxamine (37 patients) or clomipramine (42 patients) for 10 weeks. Efficacy was evaluated with the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS), the National Institute of Mental Health Obsessive-Compulsive scale, and Patient and Clinical Global Improvement scales. [Influence of paternal age in schizophrenia].

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is an aetiologically heterogeneous syndrome, with a strong genetic component. Despite a reduced fertility in this disorder, its prevalence is maintained and could be explained by de novo genetic mutations. Advanced paternal age (APA) is a major source of new mutations in human beings and could thus be associated with an increased risk of developing schizophrenia in offspring. New mutations related to APA have been implicated as a cause of sporadic cases in several autosomal dominant diseases and also in neurodevelopmental diseases, autism, intellectual disabilities, a

Association of Primary Care Consultation Patterns With Early Signs and Symptoms of Psychosis.

IMPORTANCE: Primary care is an important part of the care pathway for patients with psychosis; therefore, primary care physicians need to be able to accurately identify those at clinical high risk of psychosis. The difficulty of this task is increased because clinical high-risk symptoms are frequently nonspecific to psychosis. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the consultation patterns for a prespecified set of symptoms can be used to identify primary care patients who later developed a psychotic illness. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This nested case-control study used primary care consu

A roadmap for focused ultrasound applications in psychiatry: Proceedings of the 2024 symposium on focused ultrasound in psychiatry (FUS-PULSE).

Transcranial focused ultrasound (FUS) is an emerging neuromodulation modality that enables incisionless, spatially precise targeting of deep brain structures implicated in neuropsychiatric conditions. Growing clinical applications in FUS psychiatry encompass both transient and permanent bioeffects, including focal lesioning, neurostimulation, and targeted drug delivery. In response to rapid advances in the field, an in-person multidisciplinary symposium, FUS-PULSE, was held in Toronto, Canada from June 5-7 2024. The meeting convened over 70 international experts across neurosurgery, psychiatry

Evolving perceptions of treatment helpfulness across mental illnesses in Singapore: 8-year comparison using nationally representative samples.

BACKGROUND: Singapore conducted its second nationwide mental health literacy survey in 2023, following the first survey in 2015. AIMS: This study aimed to ascertain the population's beliefs about the helpfulness of treatments for mental illnesses in Singapore, and assessed changes over an 8-year period. METHOD: A nationally representative cohort (n = 4195, aged 18-67 years) was interviewed between September 2022 and February 2024, which replicated the methods of the 2015 survey (n = 3006, aged 18-65 years). Using a vignette-based approach, 3002 respondents rated the perceived helpfulness of

Follow-up of subjects labelled with putative pre-psychotic states: Viewed from a transdiagnostic clinical high-at-risk mental state (CHARMS) paradigm.

BACKGROUND: Follow-up of subjects with putative pre-psychotic states is essential to clarify the transition process to psychosis, while "non-converters" also deserve clinical attention as many may evolve into other psychiatric disorders with diverse outcomes. This study aimed to examine help-seeking individuals who have been labelled at clinical high-risk state but not converting to full-blown psychosis during first two years of follow-up. METHODS: A retrospective observational cohort study of help-seeking subjects was conducted by reviewing medical records of participants in a previous early

Elevated cerebrospinal fluid levels of oxytocin in obsessive-compulsive disorder. Comparison with Tourette's syndrome and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: Limited neurobiological data have implicated central arginine vasopressin in the pathobiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Based on twin, family genetic, and pharmacological studies, some forms of OCD are etiologically related to Tourette's syndrome. The role of arginine vasopressin and related compounds such as oxytocin in Tourette's syndrome has not been previously explored. METHODS: To compare cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of arginine vasopressin and oxytocin, we collected CSF at midday in a standardized fashion from a total of 83 individuals (29 patients with OCD

Exploring genetic and epigenetic markers for predicting or monitoring response to cognitive-behavioral therapy in obsessive-compulsive disorder: A systematic review.

Growing evidence has identified potential biomarkers of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) efficacy in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Genetic and epigenetic mechanisms (e.g., polymorphisms, DNA methylation) contribute to OCD pathogenesis and CBT response variability, establishing them as a key research focus. To evaluate their associations with CBT outcomes in OCD, we conducted a systematic review of PubMed, Web of Science, CNKI, and Cochrane Library (from inception to January 2025), identifying eight studies that met rigorous inclusion criteria. The identified predictors included: (1)
