Evaluation of the Impact of Serum Vitamin D Levels on the Scoring Atopic Dermatitis Index in Pediatric Atopic Dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic and recurrent inflammatory skin condition characterized by itching, eczematous plaques, and dry skin. Despite ongoing research, its exact cause remains elusive. In this study, we aimed to explore the factors that influence the severity of AD in children and assess the relationship between serum vitamin D levels and the disease's severity. We enrolled 96 AD patients in our investigation, evaluated their clinical condition using the Scoring Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD) index, and compared them to a group of 90 healthy controls. Our analysis revealed that serum v…

Prevalence of allergic contact dermatitis in children with and without atopic dermatitis: A multicenter retrospective case-control study.

BACKGROUND: As both allergic contact dermatitis and atopic dermatitis (AD) have similar clinical presentations and are characterized by spongiotic dermatitis on skin biopsy, many children with AD are not referred for patch testing and allergic contact dermatitis is underdiagnosed. OBJECTIVE: To provide updated prevalence data of common contact allergens in children with and without AD. METHODS: This is a retrospective case-control study using the Pediatric Allergic Contact Dermatitis Registry from 2018 to 2022. RESULTS: A total of 912 children were included (615 with AD and 297 without AD).…

Signs of atopic dermatitis and contact dermatitis affected by distinct H2-haplotype in the NC/Nga genetic background.

We recently advocated in favour of naming a novel H2-haplotype consisting of Kd, D/Ldm7, I-Ak and I-Ek in the atopic dermatitis (AD) mouse model NC/Nga as "H-2nc." The role of the H2-haplotype in AD development was investigated in H2 b -congenic NC/Nga mice (NC.h2 b/b and NC.h2 b/nc ) established by backcrossing. A severe 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB)-induced dermatitis in NC/Nga was alleviated partially in NC.h2 b/nc and significantly in NC.h2 b/b . The AD phenotype was correlated with thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP)-epidermal expression levels and serum levels of total IgE and IL-18/IL…

Whither... the future for contact dermatitis? A report from the 2007 International Review of Current Problems in Contact Dermatitis.

In our report we summarize presentations made at the International Review of Current Problems in Contact Dermatitis meeting which took place at the St John's Institute of Dermatology, London, on 1 June 2007, and which brought together over 100 dermatologists from the U.K., continental Europe and the U.S.A. During this small and informal meeting, the state-of-the art lectures on various aspects of contact dermatitis were followed by energetic discussions.

Contact dermatitis in hairdressers: the Italian experience. Gruppo Italiano Ricerca Dermatiti da Contatto e Ambientali.

A multicenter study was performed in 9 Italian centers by members of the GIRDCA, to evaluate the frequency and source of contact sensitization in a group of 302 hairdressers with dermatitis. Occupational habits and use of preventive measures were specifically investigated both in these 302 hairdressers and in a further group of 240 hairdressers who answered a questionnaire. The results showed the presence of an occupationally relevant sensitization in 60.9% of the 302 hairdressers. This proportion included 52 hairdressers who had negative patch tests to the hairdressers' series but showed posi…

Seborrhoeic dermatitis and Pityrosporum orbiculare: treatment of seborrhoeic dermatitis of the scalp with miconazole-hydrocortisone (Daktacort), miconazole and hydrocortisone.

Seventy patients (36 males and 34 females) with seborrhoeic dermatitis of the scalp were treated in a double-blind controlled study, for a maximum of 6 weeks, with 2% miconazole base and 1% hydrocortisone (Daktacort), 2% miconazole base, or 1% hydrocortisone. Patients who were cured were treated with the same formulation prophylactically twice monthly for 3 months or until recurrence. Nineteen of 21 patients were cured in the Daktacort group, 15 of 22 in the miconazole group and 17 of 24 in the hydrocortisone group. The number of cultured Pityrosporum orbiculare was significantly lower in all …

Follicular Atopic Dermatitis in Dark Skin.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) may present with distinct clinical features in individuals with dark skin, often posing diagnostic challenges. We report a pediatric case of follicular AD in a dark-skinned patient to highlight its characteristic clinical presentation. The eruption consisted of bilateral, symmetrical, multiple, discrete, purplish to brownish follicular scaly papules distributed over the trunk, back, and both upper and lower limbs. Dermoscopy revealed a white-brown background, normal-appearing terminal hairs in the center, perifollicular desquamation, multiple dotted vessels with heteroge…

Targeting ROCK2 for Atopic Dermatitis Relief.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) remains a significant therapeutic challenge. This Viewpoint summarizes the discovery of compound 10d, a natural product-inspired selective ROCK2 inhibitor, whose design was guided by the identification of a novel hydrophobic surface unique to ROCK2. The compound demonstrates compelling efficacy in a mouse model of MC903-induced AD, positioning selective ROCK2 inhibition as a promising strategy for this condition.

Hypogammaglobulinemia during infancy and atopic dermatitis.

Background: Hypogammaglobulinemia during infancy (HI) is often transient, resolves with time, and typically does not associate with a specific immunologic deficiency. If hypogammaglobulinemia persists, then it may be secondary to an immunologic disorder and be associated with significant clinically diagnosed infections. When phenotyping HI, any implications of associated atopic dermatitis (AD) can be clinically helpful. Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the clinical and immunologic differences between patients who have HI and AD versus those with AD alone or with HI alone. Me…

Contact Allergy Screening for Atopic Dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) and allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) are common inflammatory skin diseases in both children and adults that present similarly and often coexist. Patch testing is the gold standard for establishing the diagnosis of ACD and can often help distinct between the 2 conditions. Patch testing is more challenging in patients with underlying AD due to potential for angry back reactions. In this review, we discuss the current evidence and guidelines regarding the screening for contact allergies in patients with AD. We also discuss the most frequent relevant allergens in adults and…

Seborrheic Dermatitis-Like Presentation of Dermatomyositis.

A 49-year-old female presented with redness and scaling of scalp of 2 years duration. It was associated with photosensitivity and difficulty getting up from squatting position since 4 months. Written informed consent was obtained from the patient who agreed to take part in the study. Clinical examination revealed diffuse uniform erythema affecting scalp and its margins at forehead, temples and posterior aspect of neck. Cite this article as: Das P., Bhatnagar A, Sharma S, et al. Ocular surface disease in atopic dermatitis.

Atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC) is a severe ocular surface disease (OSD) that significantly affects patients' quality of life and can lead to blindness. AKC is associated with atopic dermatitis (AD), a common chronic inflammatory skin disease affecting both children and adults. This thesis investigates the prevalence, clinical features and underlying mechanisms of OSD and AKC in AD patients, aiming to improve the understanding and management of these conditions. Two distinct questionnaire studies were conducted to assess the association of OSD symptoms in AD patients within the general popul…
