Dietary management of patients with diabetes treated by hemodialysis.

Early experience with the treatment of patients with insulin-dependent diabetes and renal failure by chronic hemodialysis indicated a high mortality and increased incidence of medical complications. Since 1972, a marked improvement in survival and reduction in incidence of complications has been attributed to more rigorous control of fluid overload, hypertension, and blood sugar levels by insulin therapy and careful dietary management. A diet has been developed which combines the diet used by dialysis patients with suitable modifications for the insulin-dependent patient with diabetes. The imp

Planning, implementation, and evaluation of a fortification program. Control of vitamin A deficiency in the Philippines.

In a three-year pilot project in the Philippines, the magnitude of vitamin A deficiency and its clinical manifestation (xerophthalmia) was determined, and three alternate programs for eliminating and preventing it in various ecologic zones were designed and implemented concurrently in separate areas in each ecologic zone. Results were evaluated, and costs and benefits of each program were determined. The results of the fortification program are reported. Monosodium glutamate (MSG) was selected as the ideal carrier was fortified at a level which provided 15,000 I.U. retinol palmitate to the ave

Milk consumption by black and by white pupils in two primary schools.

It is heartening to note that relatively well nourished black children in the United States, a number of whom are, in all probability, lactose intolerant and most of whom are destined to become lactose intolerant adults, are able to consume nutritionally valuable quantities of milk with meals and, on the whole, do not report suffering from any abdominal pain or discomfort. It is also encouraging that this population of over two hundred primary school children consumed, on the average, 75 per cent of the 1/2 pt. milk served with lunch, reported drinking an average of three glasses of milk daily

Nutritional implications of renal disease. IV. Nutritional aspects of chronic renal insufficiency in childhood.

Nutritional treatment of children with renal insufficiency presents special problems related to undernutrition, i.e., insufficient caloric intake to permit normal growth, vitamin D intake, and protein needs, as well as depressed appetite. With regard to energy, it is suggested that uremia may lead to increased caloric requirements, thus exacerbating growth depression. Protein requirements, which actually may not be as important as caloric needs, have not been determined for uremic children. Another factor in growth failure in such children involves vitamin D metabolism and its role in renal os

Ascorbic acid and fractures in children with myelomeningocele.

Ascorbic acid intake of sixty-seven patients with myelomeningocele, ages one through eight years, was evaluated in two groups, fracture and non-fracture, to compare their intake of ascorbic acid from food-plus-supplement, food-only, and supplement-only with the recommended allowances. Intake from food-plus-supplement exceeded the allowance for 90 per cent of the fracture and 83 per cent of the non-fractured patients. Intake from food-only exceeded the recommended allowance in 79 per cent of the fracture and 75 per cent of the non-fracture subjects. All supplementations exceeded 100 per cent of
