Orthopaedic and orthodontic treatment with hyrax, Class III elastics on mandibular miniplates, maxillary mini-implants in a Class III adolescent: A case report.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of Skeletal Class III malocclusion continues to be considered as one of the biggest challenges in orthodontics as the success of its correction is largely unpredictable. Early diagnosis and treatment are highly recommended to eliminate primary etiological factors and prevent an increase in severity of the existing malocclusion. However, if the diagnosis is delayed until adulthood, treatment becomes restricted to orthognathic surgery due to limited or no remaining growth potential left. The inherent risks involved with the surgical procedures often preclude the patient

Atrophic acne scar: a process from altered metabolism of elastic fibres and collagen fibres based on transforming growth factor-β1 signalling.

BACKGROUND: Atrophic acne scar, a persistent sequela from acne, is undesirably troubling to many patients due to its cosmetic and psychosocial aspects. Although there have been some reports emphasizing the role of early inflammatory responses in atrophic acne scarring, evolving perspectives on the detailed pathogenic processes are promptly needed. OBJECTIVES: Examining the histological, immunological and molecular changes in early acne lesions susceptible to atrophic scarring can provide new insights to understand the pathophysiology of atrophic acne scar. METHODS: We experimentally validate

Is an Elastic Ankle Support Effective in Improving Jump Landing Performance, and Static and Dynamic Balance in Young Adults With and Without Chronic Ankle Instability?

CONTEXT: In some patients, ankle sprains lead to chronic symptoms like pain or muscular weakness called chronic ankle instability (CAI). External ankle supports have shown to be effective in preventing sprains and reducing recurrence, but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. As sensorimotor variables are associated with injury incidence, an influence of external ankle support on landing performance and balance seems plausible. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the effects of an elastic ankle support on jump landing performance and static and dynamic balance in patients with CAI and healthy controls. D

Do demographic and perioperative parameters really affect the final outcomes of pediatric femur shaft fractures managed by elastic nails? A prospective study.

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric femoral shaft fractures are more commonly treated with intramedullary titanium elastic nail system (TENS). Adhering to the principles, most studies had supported excellent results with this instrumentation and attributed the variation in age, weight, immobilization protocols, technical factors like fracture pattern, reduction and complications as reasons to poor outcomes in their individual studies. Hence, we wanted to identify the potential demographic and perioperative parameters that could affect the final outcomes in this cohort. METHODS: A prospective (level III) stu

Nonlinear Buckling Analysis of Functionally Graded Graphene Reinforced Composite Shallow Arches with Elastic Rotational Constraints under Uniform Radial Load.

The buckling behavior of functionally graded graphene platelet-reinforced composite (FG-GPLRC) shallow arches with elastic rotational constraints under uniform radial load is investigated in this paper. The nonlinear equilibrium equation of the FG-GPLRC shallow arch with elastic rotational constraints under uniform radial load is established using the Halpin-Tsai micromechanics model and the principle of virtual work, from which the critical buckling load of FG-GPLRC shallow arches with elastic rotational constraints can be obtained. This paper gives special attention to the effect of the GPL

Anogenital Mammary-Like Glands: A Study of Their Normal Histology With Emphasis on Glandular Depth, Presence of Columnar Epithelial Cells, and Distribution of Elastic Fibers.

The normal histology of anogenital mammary-like glands (AGMLG) has been studied previously, but some aspects, including glandular depth, presence of columnar epithelium resembling columnar cell change/hyperplasia as defined in mammary pathology, and distribution of elastic fibers, have not been previously investigated. To address these issues, we studied 148 AGMLG identified in 133 paraffin blocks sampled from 64 vulvar wide excision or vulvectomy specimens (64 patients, various indications for surgery). The depth of AGMLG ranged from 0.64 to 3.9 mm. Epithelial columnar cell change was noted i

Dynamic arterial elastance obtained using arterial signal does not predict an increase in arterial pressure after a volume expansion in the operating room.

INTRODUCTION: Dynamic arterial elastance (Eadyn) is defined as the ratio between pulse pressure variations (PPV) and stroke volume variations (SVV). Eadyn has been proposed to predict an increase in mean arterial pressure (MAP) after volume expansion with conflicting results. The aim of the present study was to test the reliability of Eadyn in hypotensive patients (MAP<65mmHg) in the operating room (OR). PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study pooled data from 51 patients. They were included after the induction of anaesthesia and before skin incision. Eadyn, MAP and stroke volume (FloTrac™, Vigileo™,

Electromyography Activation of the Lower-Limb Muscles Adopting a Physioball and Elastic Band to Stabilize the Knee Joint During Multiple Sets With Submaximal Loads.

STUDY DESIGN: Crossover design. CONTEXT: Excessive valgus and varus force which affected the knee joint during dynamic tasks has been often associated to lower extremity injuries. Strategies to increase the resistance against these asymmetries (eg, the use of a physioball between the knees or elastic bands around the knees) are often applied in rehabilitation and conditioning programs. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of performing leg press (LP) 45° using a physioball and elastic band over multiple sets with submaximal loads on electromyographic (EMG) ampli

Elastic Stable Chest Repair as a Means of Stabilizing the Anterior Chest Wall in Recurrent Pectus Excavatum with Sternocostal Pseudarthrosis: An Innovative Fixation Device.

INTRODUCTION: Open surgical procedures in the treatment of pectus excavatum (PE) involve predetermined incisions in the parasternal cartilage and the bony ribs. For some procedures, the ribs are even dissected from the sternum for better sternal mobilization and thus better elevation of the funnel. Secure restoration of the sternocostal junction is then required, with the consequence that healing may be quite impaired. Patients may also subsequently suffer from sternocostal nonunion, for example, pseudarthrosis, and dislocated ribs, as well as pain and a recurrence of PE. MATERIALS AND METHOD
