Depression, Anxiety, Resilience, and Coping: The Experience of Pregnant and New Mothers During the First Few Months of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Background: It is well-documented that the mental health of pregnant and postpartum women is essential for maternal, child, and family well-being. Of major public health concern is the perinatal mental health impacts that may occur during the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. It is essential to explore the symptom experience and predictors of mental health status, including the relationship between media use and mental health. Materials and Methods: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the experiences of pregnant and postpartum women (n = 524) in the United States in th

A qualitative study on barriers to utilisation of institutional delivery services in Moroto and Napak districts, Uganda: implications for programming.

BACKGROUND: Skilled attendance at delivery is critical in prevention of maternal deaths. However, many women in low- and middle-income countries still deliver without skilled assistance. This study was carried out to identify perceived barriers to utilisation of institutional delivery in two districts in Karamoja, Uganda. METHODS: Data were collected through participatory rural appraisal (PRA) with 887 participants (459 women and 428 men) in 20 villages in Moroto and Napak districts. Data were analysed using deductive content analysis. Notes taken during PRA session were edited, triangulated

Extreme Weather Events and Linkages with HIV Vulnerabilities Among Young Sex Workers and Sexually Diverse Men in Nairobi, Kenya: Qualitative Multi-method Insights.

There is growing attention to the impacts of climate change and related extreme weather events (EWE) on HIV vulnerabilities, yet this research largely overlooks key populations such as sex workers and gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM). This is a critical knowledge gap in contexts that are greatly affected by climate change, EWE, and HIV, such as Kenya. To address this gap, this study examined the lived experiences of sex workers and gbMSM aged 18-24 in Nairobi, Kenya, regarding the relationships between climate change and EWE, resource insecurities (e.g., food, water),

Natural infrastructure in dryland streams (NIDS) can establish regenerative wetland sinks that reverse desertification and strengthen climate resilience.

In this article we describe the natural hydrogeomorphological and biogeochemical cycles of dryland fluvial ecosystems that make them unique, yet vulnerable to land use activities and climate change. We introduce Natural Infrastructure in Dryland Streams (NIDS), which are structures naturally or anthropogenically created from earth, wood, debris, or rock that can restore implicit function of these systems. This manuscript further discusses the capability of and functional similarities between beaver dams and anthropogenic NIDS, documented by decades of scientific study. In addition, we present

Vaccine hesitancy, misinformation in the era of Covid-19: Lessons from the past.

BACKGROUND: As the world has challenged/argued with the Covid-19 pandemic over the last two years, there has been an increase in vaccine misinformation. Although immunity against Covid-19 infection is limited to 4-6 months and requires at least three doses of vaccine to be maximally effective, the current vaccination campaign in industrialized countries shows that vaccinated citizens experience greater immunological protection against severe forms of the disease than unvaccinated citizens. METHODOLOGY: A perusal of the literature was performed in order to reconstruct the communication methods

Realities and challenges of breastfeeding policy in the context of HIV: a qualitative study on community perspectives on facilitators and barriers related to breastfeeding among HIV positive mothers in Baringo County, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Although recent policies have sought to increase the rates of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) and continued breastfeeding for HIV exposed infants, few programs have considered the multiple social and cultural barriers to the practice. Therefore, to generate evidence for exclusive and continued breastfeeding policies in Kenya, we examined community perspectives on the facilitators and barriers in adherence to EBF for the HIV positive mothers. METHODS: Qualitative research was conducted in Koibatek, a sub-County in Baringo County Kenya, in August 2014 among 205 respondents. A total of

Importance of fisheries for food security across three climate change vulnerable deltas.

Deltas are home to a large and growing proportion of the world's population, often living in conditions of extreme poverty. Deltaic ecosystems are ecologically significant as they support high biodiversity and a variety of fisheries, however these coastal environments are extremely vulnerable to climate change. The Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna (Bangladesh/India), the Mahanadi (India), and the Volta (Ghana) are among the most important and populous delta regions in the world and they are all considered at risk of food insecurity and climate change. The fisheries sector is vital for populations tha

How can the operating environment for nutrition research be improved in sub-Saharan Africa? The views of African researchers.

Optimal nutrition is critical for human development and economic growth. Sub-Saharan Africa is facing high levels of food insecurity and only few sub-Saharan African countries are on track to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger by 2015. Effective research capacity is crucial for addressing emerging challenges and designing appropriate mitigation strategies in sub-Saharan Africa. A clear understanding of the operating environment for nutrition research in sub-Saharan Africa is a much needed prerequisite. We collected data on the barriers and requirements for conducting nutrition research in su

[Psychopathology in eating disorders: new trends].

Self-starvation as well as binge eating appears to be far more complex than the uniformity of eating disorders clinical features let us predict. One reason is that these "body-centred" behaviours generate severe biological effects, the complications playing a great part in the recovery process. Furthermore, these disorders which origins are likely to be multi-factorial seem to arise from physiological (ephebic modifications, gene pool...), family and sociocultural factors, psychological features predominating in a synergy always leading to a specificity that cannot be ignored. The progression

Complex Autism Spectrum Disorder: Structural Determinants of Health and Their Impact on the Diagnosis.

Emmanuel is a 6.5-year-old boy who was referred to your evaluation clinic for concerns about his social skills and communication. He arrived in the United States (US) 1 year ago after an immigration trajectory that began in Haiti when he was aged 3 years; passed through Mexico, where the family was in various shelters for over a year; and concluded 2 years later, with the family eventually settling in an urban center in the northeastern United States. While in Mexico, the family was living in a camp without access to utilities. They faced significant food insecurity and experienced multiple re

Healthy lifestyle factors and male perpetration of intimate partner violence: a cross-sectional study in Mwanza, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: In Tanzania, nearly half of ever-married women have experienced some form of intimate partner violence (IPV), yet little knowledge of IPV from the male perspective exists. OBJECTIVE: To explore the role of essential healthy lifestyle factors, diet, sleep, and exercise, and their potential role in IPV perpetration. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 1,002 young men (ages 18-24), 754 of which were in an intimate relationship in the previous year. The study took place in Mwanza, Tanzania and used multivariable logistic regression models to explore associations betw

Progress of Eastern Mediterranean Countries towards Meeting USDA Dietary Guidelines for Pregnant Women: A Focused Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pregnant women across the globe, in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR), face various dietary obstacles during their pregnancy. In this region, characterized by diverse cultural preferences and traditions, emergencies such as conflicts, natural disasters, epidemics, and displacement continue to exist. This influences food insecurity in the region, particularly among pregnant women. This review aims to enhance maternal and fetal health by analyzing these nutritional challenges and assessing women's nutrient consumption in accordance with the USDA's 2020-2025 Nutritional Gu

The dual burden of malnutrition and its associated factors among mother-child pairs at the household level in Ethiopia: An urgent public health issue demanding sector-wide collaboration.

INTRODUCTION: The coexistence of under-nutrition and over-nutrition in developing countries like Ethiopia results in the "mother-child pair double burden of malnutrition," with children experiencing either stunting, wasting or underweight while mothers face overweight or obesity. This poses a major public health challenge, prompting global health organizations to prioritize the issue and urge governments to act quickly. Despite this, there is a lack of research in Ethiopia on the double burden of malnutrition among mother-child pairs at the household level and the factors that worsen it. OBJE

Childhood malnutrition care during the Gaza siege: aprospective program evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Childhood malnutrition in the Gaza Strip has escalated to critical levels due to prolonged blockade, conflict-related destruction of food systems, and severe restrictions on humanitarian aid. Despite widespread acute malnutrition, little evidence exists on treatment outcomes or program performance during the period of complete siege. This study evaluates the burden of acute malnutrition and documents the effectiveness of WHO-standard outpatient therapeutic care delivered during the 2024–2025 total blockade in Gaza City. METHODS: A single-group prospective program evaluation was con

Dietary Adequacy and Its Associated Factors Among Adolescents in a Rural District of Sindh.

Background: Adolescents in low- and middle-income countries face a disproportionate burden of dietary inadequacy, yet evidence on the determinants of overall diet quality remains scarce. This study assessed the prevalence of macro- and micronutrient inadequate intake and identified factors associated with dietary adequacy among adolescents in rural Pakistan. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among adolescents using multistage cluster sampling. Dietary intake was assessed through a single 24-h dietary recall; nutrient adequacy was determined using age-and sex-specific Dietary Refe

Health and Well-Being Among College Students in the United States During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Daily Diary Study.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that anxiety and stress increased among college students during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, less is known about daily experiences of affect, worry, substance use behaviors, experiences of pleasure, concern over food security, experiences of bias or discrimination, feelings of belongingness, and other indicators of well-being and how they vary across days in this population. OBJECTIVE: This study surveyed a wide range of indicators of health and well-being in daily life over 21 days with a sample of college students in a large university system in the United S

Exploring the Paradoxical Relationship of a Creb 3 Regulatory Factor Missense Variant With Body Mass Index and Diabetes Among Samoans: Protocol for the Soifua Manuia (Good Health) Observational Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of obesity and diabetes in Samoa, like many other Pacific Island nations, has reached epidemic proportions. Although the etiology of these conditions can be largely attributed to the rapidly changing economic and nutritional environment, a recently identified genetic variant, rs373863828 (CREB 3 regulatory factor, CREBRF: c.1370G>A p.[R457Q]) is associated with increased odds of obesity, but paradoxically, decreased odds of diabetes. OBJECTIVE: The overarching goal of the Soifua Manuia (Good Health) study was to precisely characterize the association of the CREBRF v

Assessing factors associated with poor maternal mental health among mothers of children born small and sick at 24-47 months in rural Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Global investments in neonatal survival have resulted in a growing number of children with morbidities surviving and requiring ongoing care. Little is known about the caregivers of these children in low- and middle-income countries, including maternal mental health which can further negatively impact child health and development outcomes. We aimed to assess the prevalence and factors associated with poor maternal mental health in mothers of children born preterm, low birthweight (LBW), and with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) at 24-47 months of age in rural Rwanda. METHODS:

Transportation cost as a barrier to contraceptive use among women initiating treatment for HIV in Tanzania.

Transportation cost is a barrier to HIV treatment, yet no studies have examined its association with contraceptive use among women living with HIV. We analyzed cross-sectional data from women attending three public healthcare facilities in Shinyanga, Tanzania where they initiated antiretroviral therapy for HIV infection in the previous 90 days; all facilities offered free contraception. Women self-reported current contraceptive use and the round-trip cost of transportation to the facility. Among 421 women aged 18-49, 86 (20.4%) were using any modern contraceptive method, of which half were usi

Barriers to substance use disorder treatment among Asian Americans in New York City: A qualitative study of provider perspectives.

Substance use disorders (SUDs) are a major mental health and public health concern in the United States, yet research and services for Asian American populations remain sparse. Although SUD prevalence among Asian Americans is not consistently higher than in other racial groups, treatment utilization is markedly lower, and the aggregation of diverse ethnic groups into a single category and the "model minority" stereotype obscure heterogeneity in needs and contribute to underdiagnosis, undertreatment, and limited culturally competent care. We conducted one-on-one, semi-structured interviews with
