Management of extensor tendon injuries.

Extensor tendon injuries are very common injuries, which inappropriately treated can cause severe lasting impairment for the patient. Assessment and management of flexor tendon injuries has been widely reviewed, unlike extensor injuries. It is clear from the literature that extensor tendon repair should be undertaken immediately but the exact approach depends on the extensor zone. Zone I injuries otherwise known as mallet injuries are often closed and treated with immobilisaton and conservative management where possible. Zone II injuries are again conservatively managed with splinting. Closed

Association Between a 3D-Printed Simulation Model and Self-Assessed Confidence in Dental Trauma Management.

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: Simulation-based learning using 3D-printed models offers a promising approach to improve confidence in complex procedures. Dental trauma can lead to severe functional and esthetic consequences if not managed promptly and effectively. This study aimed to assess the impact of a novel 3D-printed simulation model on self-reported confidence in dental trauma management among undergraduate students. METHODS: An observational comparative study was conducted at the Department of Dentistry, Faculty of Health, Toulouse, France. Two cohorts were included: fifth-year students who tr

Greater deformation and lower stiffness, but similar ultimate failure strength with fixed-loop cortical suspensory device compared to metal interference screw for femoral fixation of bone-patellar tendon-bone grafts in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare a contemporary fixed-loop cortical suspensory devices (CSDs) with metal interference screws (IS) for femoral bone-patellar tendon-bone (BPTB) graft fixation in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). METHODS: Seven matched pairs of fresh-frozen human cadaveric knees underwent anatomical ACLR with BPTB grafts. Femoral fixation was randomized to a fixed-loop CSD or metal IS. Specimens underwent cyclic loading at 50 and 100 N at 1 Hz until failure or up to 1000 cycles. Comparison between the fixation methods for cyclic displacement, dis

Age-Associated Variation in Documented Emergency Department Analgesia Among Pediatric Trauma Patients in a Painful Injury Cohort.

OBJECTIVES: Young children may be at risk for less frequent analgesic administration after injury because pain assessment and communication are more difficult. We evaluated whether age younger than 6 years was associated with less frequent ED analgesic administration among pediatric trauma registry patients with painful injuries. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of trauma registry patients aged 18 years or younger evaluated in an emergency department from May 2022 through April 2025. The primary painful injury cohort included patients with injury descriptors consistent with

Anatomical reconstruction of the patellar tendon with coverage using a perforator LGAP flap in ballistic trauma: The importance of interdisciplinary collaboration.

INTRODUCTION: Ballistic injuries to the knee present a complex reconstructive challenge due to associated bone, tendon, and soft tissue loss. Early coordinated management between orthopedic and plastic surgery teams is essential to optimize functional outcomes. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 22-year-old male who sustained a Gustilo IIIb open fracture of the proximal tibia following a gunshot wound, with avulsion of the tibial tuberosity and complete patellar tendon rupture. Initial debridement and negative pressure therapy were followed, 48hours later, by anatomical reconstruction of th

Management Strategies of Fingertip Injuries: A Case Series.

Fingertip injuries are among the most frequently encountered hand traumas in clinical settings and often result from occupational, recreational, or domestic incidents. These injuries range from simple lacerations and avulsions to more complex presentations involving severe tissue loss, exposed bone, fractures, and nail bed disruptions. Given the intricate anatomy of the fingertip, comprising soft tissue, bone, nerves, and the nail unit, these injuries can significantly compromise hand function, sensation, dexterity, and aesthetic appearance. Prompt and appropriate management is crucial to mini

Osteohistological analysis of metatarsals reveals new information on pathology and life history of troodontids from the Campanian Dinosaur Park Formation, Alberta, Canada.

Troodontidae is a family of small-bodied theropods known predominantly from Asia but are comparatively scarce in North America. In the Dinosaur Park Formation (DPF) of Alberta, Canada, they are known predominantly from isolated material, precluding taxonomic and ontogenetic precision for this clade. Previously never sampled histologically within the DPF, here we attempt to fill in gaps in our knowledge about the life histories of the clade in this formation by histologically surveying metatarsals, which are among the most abundant and identifiable troodontid elements in the DPF. We sampled 11

Development of patient-specific finite element model for study of composite dental implants.

Traumatic dental injuries can occur due to various reasons such as accidents, sports injuries, fights, falls, and others. These injuries can affect the teeth, gums, and surrounding tissues, and can range from minor chips and cracks to severe fractures, dislocations, and avulsions (when the tooth is completely knocked out of the socket). The most common way to address this is by replacing affected teeth with dental implants. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the use of composite materials in dental implants and compare them with the traditionally used materials using a patient specifi

Forensic Death Investigations of Dog Bite Injuries in 31 Cats.

Animal bite injuries are common in free-ranging cats in Taiwan, and most fatal animal bite events are presumed to be caused by dogs. However, speculation regarding animal abuse may occur when carcasses with prominent injuries are found by members of the general public. Local animal protection offices and veterinary clinicians sometimes face difficulties in convincing these individuals by identifying specific features of dog bite injuries in cat carcasses. Therefore, the present study analyzed injury patterns and distribution in 31 necropsied cats with animal bite injuries, and applied deoxyrib

Traumatic abdominal wall hernia caused by a low fall.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic abdominal wall hernias (TAWH) are uncommon injuries classically associated with high-energy blunt traumatic mechanisms. Motor vehicle collisions cause the highest proportion of all TAWH. Literature is currently limited, with some debate existing over surgical management strategies. CASE PRESENTATION: A 67-year-old man presented after falling from a short step stool while landscaping his yard. On exam, an exquisitely tender lateral flank mass was present with peristaltic movement. CT imaging revealed a TAWH with incarcerated large and small bowel. He was taken to the OR f

Musculoskeletal findings on MRI among postpartum women with persistent pelvic pain.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Persistent postpartum pelvic pain affects one in six women, and its source is often unexplained in the absence of obvious clinical findings. Musculoskeletal injuries during childbirth are common and can be detected using MRI or US; however, pelvic imaging is not standard of care in evaluating women with persistent pain. We hypothesize that clinical symptoms in women with unexplained persistent postpartum pelvic pain will correlate with musculoskeletal abnormalities identified on MRI in > 50% of cases. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of women with persistent po

Magnetic resonance imaging and short-term clinical results of severe frozen shoulder treated with manipulation under ultrasound-guided cervical nerve root block.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the magnetic resonance (MR) imaging findings and short-term clinical outcomes of severe idiopathic frozen shoulder treated with manipulation under ultrasound-guided cervical nerve root block (MUC). METHODS: The subjects were 30 patients (average age, 55.2 years; 12 men, 18 women) with severe frozen shoulder. Severe idiopathic frozen shoulder was defined as follows: a range of motion (ROM) of ≤ 100° in forward flexion, ≤ 10° in external rotation, and at or below the fifth lumbar vertebral level in internal rotation. Before the manipulation, all patients had continued g

Surgical treatment of posterior cruciate ligament injury.

Successful posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) reconstruction is challenging because of the complex structures and difficult reconstruction techniques that are required. The reported results have been inconsistent. Variables that affect the results of surgery to restore PCL function include combined associated ligaments injury, difficulty to duplicate PCL anatomy, wide variation in broad femoral insertion footprint, difficulty in accurate placement of the transtibial tunnel, tunnel erosion, high internal graft stresses and graft elongation. The outcome of conservative treatment of isolated PCL i

Acute shoulder dislocation. Indications and techniques for operative management.

The acute management of the initial, anterior shoulder dislocation is dependent on the age and activity demands of the patient. After a thorough examination and appropriate radiographs, a gentle closed reduction is the initial treatment. Previous authors have recommended a period of immobilization followed by a rehabilitation program emphasizing rotator cuff strengthening. Restricting return to athletic activities to allow adequate soft tissue healing is also recommended. This will effectively treat the vast majority of patients with this injury. In patients older than 25 years of age, one wou

Motorcycle-Associated Ocular Injuries: A Narrative Review.

PURPOSE: Motorcycle-related injuries involving the eye and orbit are not well characterized, with a paucity of prospective studies focusing specifically on motorcycle-associated eye injuries nor literature reviews having been conducted on the subject. To better understand the injury types and descriptive characteristics of patients experiencing motorcycle-associated eye injuries, we sought to conduct a narrative review. METHODS: The research team utilized the following databases: PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science to query for English articles from peer-reviewed journals that provided some pa

A national questionnaire survey on knee manipulation following total knee arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Adequate range of knee motion is critical for successful total knee arthroplasty. While aggressive physical therapy is an important component, manipulation may be a necessary supplement. There seems to be a lack of consensus with variable practices existing in managing stiff postoperative knees following arthroplasty. Hence we aim to determine the current practice and trend among knee surgeons throughout the United Kingdom. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Postal questionnaires were sent out to 100 knee surgeons registered with British Association of Knee Surgeons, ensuring that the whole o
