Gender similarities in somatic depression and in DSM depression secondary symptom profiles within the context of severity and bereavement.

BACKGROUND: Most population studies report higher rates of depression among women than men, and some researchers have observed gender differences in depression symptoms overall, or in sub-groupings (e.g. somatic depression). However, gender symptom differences have been inconsistent, prompting this investigation of gender differences in secondary DSM symptom profiles in the context of bereavement status, age, and depression severity. METHODS: Individuals with symptoms of core depression (flat affect or anhedonia) were selected from a large survey of adults in the Alberta, Canada workforce. An

Ethical dilemmas and intervention strategies in doctor-patient-family communication in end-of-life pediatric oncology: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Communication in end-of-life pediatric oncology involves ethically sensitive exchanges among healthcare providers, children, and families. The main dilemmas include how to disclose prognosis without abandoning hope, how to balance parents' surrogate authority with the child's evolving participation, and how to align treatment decisions with family values, developmental capacity, and the child's best interests. This narrative review clarifies the conceptual scope of these dilemmas, synthesizes evidence on their psychological, institutional, and sociocultural determinan

Identification of Behavioral, Clinical, and Psychological Antecedents of Acute Stimulant Poisoning: Development and Implementation of a Mixed Methods Psychological Autopsy Study.

BACKGROUND: Despite increasing fatal stimulant poisoning in the United States, little is understood about the mechanism of death. The psychological autopsy (PA) has long been used to distinguish the manner of death in equivocal cases, including opioid overdose, but has not been used to explicitly explore stimulant mortality. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to develop and implement a large PA study to identify antecedents of fatal stimulant poisoning, seeking to maximize data gathering and ethical interactions during the collateral interviews. METHODS: We ascertained death records from the California Ele

Provider perspectives on the impact of COVID-19 on treatment of substance use and opioid use disorders among American Indian and Alaska Native adults.

INTRODUCTION: American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities are more likely to suffer negative consequences related to substance misuse. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the opioid poisoning crisis, in combination with ongoing treatment barriers resulting from settler-colonialism, systemic oppression and racial discrimination. AI/AN adults are at greatest risk of COVID-19 related serious illness and death. In collaboration with an Indigenous community advisory board and Tribal leadership, this study explored AI/AN treatment provider perceptions of client-relatives' (i.e., SUD treatment re

Understanding the sexual health perceptions, concerns, and needs of female partners of prostate cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer (PCa) and its treatments can have a significant negative impact on the sexual health of survivors and couples, but few studies have specifically examined the impact of PCa-related sexual dysfunction on female partners of survivors. AIM: Our objective was to perform a qualitative study to comprehensively characterize female partners' perceptions of the implications of PCa on their sex lives, as well as partners' sexual health concerns and unmet needs. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured telephone interviews about sexual health and unmet needs with female partners

Effectiveness of psychotherapeutic interventions on psychological distress in women who have experienced perinatal loss: a systematic review protocol.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal loss is a traumatic and complex experience that contributes to negative maternal psychological states and adverse outcomes impacting fetal development, maternal-fetal/infant bonding, marital/partner relationships, and child cognitive, emotional, and behavioral development. These outcomes present preventable disease burden and financial liability to individuals, families, and the healthcare system. Psychological interventions have the potential to improve outcomes for women and their families after perinatal loss. A few studies have explored the effectiveness of individual

Increased involvement of the parahippocampal gyri in a sad mood predicts future depressive symptoms.

Behavioral studies suggest a relationship between autobiographical memory, rumination and depression. The objective of this study was to determine whether remitted depressed patients show alterations in connectivity of the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC, a node in the default mode network) with the parahippocampal gyri (PHG, a region associated with autobiographical memory) while intensively recalling negative memories and whether this is related to daily life symptoms and to the further course of depression. Sad mood was induced with keywords of personal negative life events in participants

Case study of alopecia universalis and web-based news groups.

This article presents findings from an 18-month case study of a web-based news group used by individuals with alopecia universalis. Content analysis of 228 episodes of web-based communication that occurred in relation to themes of discussion was undertaken, supported by the use of concept mapping (Northcott, 1996). Analysis identified a core concept relating to that of a community of shared experience together with four supportive themes. The themes were the search for understanding and meaning, carrying on, seeking balance between past, present and future, and relating to new self, others, an

Coping in crisis: a qualitative study of stress and resilience in Ontario's long-term care workforce.

BACKGROUND: The global long-term care (LTC) sector is increasingly strained by entrenched structural vulnerabilities, including persistent workforce shortages, constrained resources, high resident-to-staff ratios, and rising clinical complexity, all of which compromise the delivery of safe, high-quality care. In Canada, these challenges are particularly acute, placing substantial psychological, emotional, and ethical strain on LTC workers. Despite this, empirical insight into their lived experiences, particularly within Ontario remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This study explores the lived experie

Barriers and facilitators to implementation of peer support after miscarriage: a systematic review using thematic synthesis methods.

OBJECTIVES: Miscarriage, defined in the UK as loss of pregnancy prior to 24 weeks gestation, can have long-term psychological implications. Clinical guidelines for perinatal bereavement care do not provide guidance on how best to support the mental health of women, and their partners, after miscarriage. Peer support (support from those who share common characteristics) is often sought, but there is little understanding of its access and use. We conducted a systematic review to understand the barriers to and facilitators of the implementation of peer support to improve mental health outcomes fo

A Mixed Methods Longitudinal Investigation of Maternal Depression Across the Perinatal Period Among Mothers Who Gave Birth During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Depression during the perinatal period is associated with negative outcomes for both mothers and children, including higher rates of chronic depression in mothers and physical, emotional, and cognitive issues in children. This study aimed to determine how the stressors of the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to prenatal and postpartum depressive symptoms among a sample of peripartum mothers who gave birth during the pandemic. This study also examined risk factors for postpartum depression, including prenatal depressive symptoms, demographic characteristics, timing of birth during the

Identifying Insomnia From Social Media Posts: Psycholinguistic Analyses of User Tweets.

BACKGROUND: Many people suffer from insomnia, a sleep disorder characterized by difficulty falling and staying asleep during the night. As social media have become a ubiquitous platform to share users' thoughts, opinions, activities, and preferences with their friends and acquaintances, the shared content across these platforms can be used to diagnose different health problems, including insomnia. Only a few recent studies have examined the prediction of insomnia from Twitter data, and we found research gaps in predicting insomnia from word usage patterns and correlations between users' insomn

The Development of Videoconference-Based Support for People Living With Rare Dementias and Their Carers: Protocol for a 3-Phase Support Group Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: People living with rarer dementias face considerable difficulty accessing tailored information, advice, and peer and professional support. Web-based meeting platforms offer a critical opportunity to connect with others through shared lived experiences, even if they are geographically dispersed, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. OBJECTIVE: We aim to develop facilitated videoconferencing support groups (VSGs) tailored to people living with or caring for someone with familial or sporadic frontotemporal dementia or young-onset Alzheimer disease, primary progressive aphasia, p

Suicide in ancient Greece.

The theme of suicide appears several times in ancient Greek literature. However, each such reference acquires special significance depending on the field from which it originates. Most of the information found in mythology, but the suicide in a mythological tale, although in terms of motivation and mental situation of heroes may be in imitation of similar incidents of real life, in fact is linked with the principles of the ancient Greek religion. In ancient drama and mainly in tragedies suicide conduces to the tragic hypostasis of the heroes and to the evolution of the plot and also is a tool

Expectant fathers' response to pregnancy: review of literature and implications for research in high-risk pregnancy.

It is evident that couvade syndrome exists in the industrialized culture. However, there are questions about the occurrence of couvade given the large range of reported incidence. Clinton found no difference in the occurrence of symptoms between expectant fathers and nonexpectant men throughout the three trimesters of pregnancy. Differences were noted, however, in the types and perceived seriousness of symptoms between these men, with expectant fathers reporting more colds, unintentional weight gain, insomnia, and restlessness. Significant differences in health deviation were reported by the n

A study of three measures of expressed emotion in a sample of Chinese families of a person with schizophrenia.

Emotional climate or expressed emotion (EE) has been examined in families of white descent who have a family member with schizophrenia but few studies have been conducted in Asian or Chinese families. This study tested the utility of the five-minute interview (FMI), adjective checklist (ACL) and family attitude scale (FAS) in a sample of Chinese family members in Beijing, in an attempt to introduce useful measures of EE into practice. A sample of 51 family members were interviewed and administered the three instruments. A total of 29.4% of families were found to be high-EE critical and 13.7% h

Therapist actions that address initially poor therapeutic alliances in psychotherapy.

The authors studied six patients treated in time-limited dynamic psychotherapy who had initially poor therapeutic alliance scores; three patients went on to have improved alliances and good outcomes, and three had unimproved alliances and poor outcomes. The therapist actions that most strongly differentiated the two groups and occurred more frequently in the cases with improved alliances and good outcomes were 1) addressing the patient's defenses, 2) addressing the patient's guilt and expectation of punishment, 3) addressing the patient's problematic feelings in relation to the therapist, and
