Aspirin eugenol ester (AEE) is a novel medicinal compound synthesized by esterifying aspirin with eugenol using the pro-drug principle. Pharmacological and pharmacodynamic experiments showed that AEE had excellent thromboprophylaxis and inhibition of platelet aggregation. This study aimed to investigate the effect of AEE on the liver of thrombosed rats to reveal its mechanism of thromboprophylaxis. Therefore, a multi-omics approach was used to analyze the liver. Transcriptome results showed 132 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the AEE group compared to the model group. Proteome results

Ghrelin represents a key hormone regulating energy balance. Upon activation of the growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR), ghrelin increases blood glucose levels, food intake, and promotes weight gain. The liver-expressed antimicrobial peptide 2 (LEAP2) acts as an endogenous antagonist of the GHSR. While the regulation of LEAP2 and its effect on the GHSR likely occur in an opposite pattern to that of ghrelin, the dietary regulation of LEAP2 remains to be described. We, therefore, examined the regulation of LEAP2 by different acute meal challenges (glucose, mixed meal, olive, lard, and fis

This paper is focused on eicosanoid signaling in insect immunology. We begin with eicosanoid biosynthesis through the actions of phospholipase A2, responsible for hydrolyzing the C18 polyunsaturated fatty acid, linoleic acid (18:2n-6), from cellular phospholipids, which is subsequently converted into arachidonic acid (AA; 20:4n-6) via elongases and desaturases. The synthesized AA is then oxygenated into one of three groups of eicosanoids, prostaglandins (PGs), epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs) and lipoxygenase products. We mark the distinction between mammalian cyclooxygenases and insect peroxy

Dairy products have an important role in a healthy diet due to their high-quality protein and rich micronutrients. Yogurt, a fermented milk product, has a similar composition to milk but is a more concentrated product in terms of group B vitamins, minerals, and proteins. It is known that bioactive metabolites and live enzymes that occur by fermentation and digestion, affect the health positively by improving gut microbiota. In recent years, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome, which threatens public health, is increasing rapidly. As with other noninfectious diseases, the diet has an important

Cervicitis is an extremely common gynecological disease and can be induced by diverse factors such as Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis, and Mycoplasma genitalium infections. Long-term unhealed cervicitis may lead to a series of diseases including endometritis, salpingitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and chorioamnionitis. However, the pathogenesis of cervicitis remains unknown. Ainsliaea fragrans Champ. (AFC) has been widely used in clinical treatment of cervicitis. In the present study, we performed an integrative investigation involving histopathology analysis and non-target pla

Prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) and prostanoid precursor fatty acids enhance the acute sedative effects of ethanol in mice, and reduce the intensity of withdrawal after chronic exposure to ethanol. Aspirin, and other inhibitors of prostanoid synthesis, attenuate ethanol's sedative effects, and interfere with the beneficial effects of prostanoid precursors (but not of PGE1 itself) in withdrawal. Neither aspirin nor indomethacin administered alone affect withdrawal behavior. In contrast, ethanol impairment of rotorod behavior is not affected by prostanoid precursors nor by aspirin. These findings suppor

BACKGROUND: Cereal crops and oilseeds provide diverse pool of fatty acids with characteristic properties. Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) provides the staple food with serving as main source of energy and protein. Germination of sorghum generally increases the nutritive value of seeds and the effects of germination on lipids composition of seeds vary greatly with processing conditions. Therefore, the current study was conducted to compare the effect of emerging processing techniques such as ultrasound (US) and microwave (MW) on fatty acids composition and oil yield of sorghum seeds befor

BACKGROUND: n-3 PUFA derived from marine sources, including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), exhibit potential for breast cancer prevention. In contrast, higher dietary intakes of n-6 PUFA, such as linoleic acid (LA), have been implicated in promoting mammary tumourigenesis. However, there is a need for further exploration into how n-3 PUFA influence breast cancer development in comparison to different amounts and sources of LA.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of n-3 PUFA-enriched diets versus n-6 PUFA diets differing in LA content, i

INTRODUCTION: Heart disease is a major cause of mortality worldwide, and the annual number of deaths due to heart disease has increased in recent years. Although heart failure is usually managed with medicines, the ultimate treatment for end-stage disease is heart transplantation or an artificial heart. However, the use of these surgical strategies is limited by issues such as thrombosis, rejection and donor shortages. Regenerative therapies, such as the transplantation of cultured cells and tissues constructed using tissue engineering techniques, are receiving great attention as possible alte

BACKGROUND: Individual fatty acids (FAs) and their derivatives (lipid mediators) with pro-inflammatory or dual anti-inflammatory and pro-resolving properties have potential to influence the health of joint tissues. Osteoarthritis (OA) is an age-associated chronic joint disease that can be featured with altered FA composition in the synovial fluid (SF) of human patients. The counts and cargo of extracellular vesicles (EVs), membrane-bound particles released by synovial joint cells and transporting bioactive lipids, can also be modified by OA. The detailed FA signatures of SF and its EVs have re

Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) is an estrogen deficiency-induced bone loss, which has been shown an association with an altered gut microbiota (GM). Gut microbiota-bone axis has been recognized as a crucial mediator for bone homeostasis. Icariin (ICA) is an effective agent to delay bone loss by regulating the bone homeostasis. Thus, we hypothesize that ICA can prevent bone loss by modulating GM and regulating metabolite alterations. The effects of ICA on bone metabolism improvement in ovariectomized (OVX) rats and their relationships with the GM and fecal metabolites were investigated. Mic

This study was conducted to assess the effect of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) on grass carp preadipocyte glycerol kinase (GyK) expression, as well as to explore the mechanism. Here, we cloned partial sequence of grass carp GyK gene and analyzed its tissue distribution. The result showed that GyK gene expressed most in the liver, followed by adipose tissue and the kidney. Besides, 400 μM oleic acid (18:1n-9, OA) was used to establish a hypertrophic preadipocyte model. GyK gene expression and enzyme activity were significantly enhanced after model cells were treated with 100 μM eicosapentaenoic a

Dietary fibers (DFs), widely used as food additives to replace fat, can benefit metabolic disorders. Soluble and highly fermentable inulin (INU) and insoluble and less fermentable microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) have hypolipidemic or cholesterol-lowering effects, respectively. The current study was aimed at identifying plasma metabolite signatures and metabolic pathways associated with inclusion of DFs with different physiochemical properties, which will lead to a better understanding of functional pathways for DFs to improve metabolic health. Pigs were fed with diets containing 5% INU or MCC

Excessive oxidative stress drives lipid peroxidation and contributes to skeletal muscle atrophy in a range of musculoskeletal diseases. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are essential components of muscle cell membrane phospholipids and are especially susceptible to peroxidation due to the presence of double bonds. Currently, therapeutic options targeting lipid peroxidation to prevent muscle wasting are limited. Substituting the hydrogen atom at the bis-allylic position with deuterium could conceivably limit lipid peroxidation while retaining enzymatic PUFA metabolism. Here we investigated t

Dietary lipids are emerging as critical regulators of tumor metabolism. However, the understanding of how dietary lipid molecules remodel tumor metabolism to drive malignancy remains incomplete. In this study, we revealed that monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) selectively promote hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression by rewiring lipid droplet (LD) metabolism through a selective autophagy mechanism. Proteomic profiling of LD-binding proteins identified HSP90A (heat shock protein 90 alpha) as a MUFA-induced factor translocated to LDs. The recruitment of HSP90A subsequently initiated the b

BACKGROUND: Cancer-associated cachexia (CAC) arises from malignant tumors and leads to a debilitating wasting syndrome. In the pathophysiology of CAC, the depletion of fat plays an important role. The mechanisms of CAC-induced fat loss include the enhancement of lipolysis, inhibition of lipogenesis, and browning of white adipose tissue (WAT). However, few lipid-metabolic enzymes have been reported to be involved in CAC. This study hypothesized that ELOVL6, a critical enzyme for the elongation of fatty acids, may be involved in fat loss in CAC.
METHODS: Transcriptome sequencing technology was

Classical swine fever (CSF) is an infectious disease caused by Classical swine fever virus (CSFV), which is characterized by depression, high fever, extensive skin bleeding, leukopenia, anorexia, alternating constipation, and diarrhea. Hemorrhagic infarction of the spleen is the main characteristic pathological change following CSFV infection. Large-scale outbreaks of CSF are rare in China and are mainly distributed regionally. The clinical symptoms of CSF are not obvious, and show variation from typical to atypical symptoms, which makes diagnosis based on clinical symptoms and pathology chall
