Understanding the Evidence-to-Practice Gap in Persistent Pain Management.

PURPOSE: Despite advances in pain science education, evidence-based approaches to chronic pain are not consistently translated into physical therapy practice. Physical therapist (PT) clinical instructors (CIs) occupy a unique role as both clinicians and mentors of future practitioners. This study examined PT CIs' pain knowledge, pain-related beliefs, confidence, and self-reported use of pain neuroscience education (PNE) and explored perceived barriers to implementing evidence-informed persistent pain management and preparing students to care for individuals with persistent pain. METHODS: This

Grant-o-thon: A Designathon-informed Grant Writing Program to Enhance Research Grant Writing Skills in Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

PROBLEM: Early career researchers in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) face substantial barriers when writing research grants and have limited writing support. A designathon approach was applied to organize a grant writing workshop (grant-o-thon) tailored for early-career LMIC researchers. This study describes the planning, implementation, and participant-reported outcomes of the grant-o-thon as a participatory training approach. APPROACH: Grant-o-thons were organized in 2023, 2024, and 2025. Consistent with the designathon model, the grant-o-thon was structured in three stages: prepar

Impact of the micro-research model on building research capacity in undergraduate health professions students in HIV-related research: a comprehensive evaluation using the RE-AIM framework.

BACKGROUND: Low-income settings such as Uganda bear a disproportionately high burden of diseases such as HIV/AIDS, but contribute little to knowledge production to address their health challenges. The training of health professionals traditionally focuses on clinical skills with less emphasis on research; yet, in practice, health professionals are expected to do operational research. In this study, we evaluate the impact of a micro-research model on building the capacity of undergraduate health professions students to conduct locally relevant biomedical, behavioral, clinical, and operations re

The Representation of Wellness Programs in Plastic Surgery Residency.

BACKGROUND: Plastic surgery residency comprises a significant portion of early adulthood. The difficulties of residency are well documented, particularly with the impact on wellness and risk of burnout. Structured wellness programs, mentorship, social support, and autonomy can decrease residency burnout. This study looked at how plastic surgery program websites and GME websites represent wellness and support programs between both integrated and independent plastic surgery residencies. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of US plastic surgery residency programs was performed during the month o

Retinal vascular calibers and correlations with biomarkers in bitches with pyometra-induced systemic inflammatory response syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Pyometra is a common uterine disease in intact bitches, frequently progressing to systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). While retinal vascular alterations have been observed in human SIRS cases, similar evaluations are lacking in veterinary medicine. This study aimed to evaluate retinal vascular calibers in bitches with pyometra-induced SIRS (P-SIRS) and explore correlations between retinal measurements and hematological, biochemical, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and interleukin-4 (IL-4) levels. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective observational stu

Adverse childhood experiences and mental health: the mediating role of perceived social support and coping strategies.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are significant risk factors for poor mental health in adolescence. However, the mechanisms linking ACEs to depression, anxiety, and stress remain underexplored in low-resource settings like Bangladesh. To examine the associations between ACEs and mental health and investigate the mediating effects of perceived social support and coping strategies among adolescents. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 1139 high-school graduates in Bangladesh. Self-administered questionnaires assessed ACEs, perceived social support, coping stra

Building capacity for maternal, newborn and child health research in low-income country settings: A research fellowship experience in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: There is a need to build research capacity to improve maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). To address this gap, we co-designed the HaSET (meaning 'happiness' in Amharic) MNCH Research Fellowship programme for academics and policymakers in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MOH) and academic institutions in Ethiopia. METHODS: Based on interviews and focus group discussions regarding a landscape analysis of the MNCH research environment, we developed an innovative 'learning by doing' model in which fellows identified researc

Side Effects of Psychotropic Medications Experienced by a Community Sample of People Living With Severe and Persistent Mental Illness.

BACKGROUND: Psychotropic medications are a common treatment modality for people living with severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI). While effective in reducing relapse and hospitalisation, psychotropic medications cause numerous side effects, varying in nature and severity. Identification and management of side effects is crucial in the ongoing management of SPMI. OBJECTIVE: To characterise the side effects of psychotropic medications, experienced by a sample of consumers living with SPMI, using a validated tool. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Consumers with SPMI living in the community were

A novel approach to the program evaluation committee.

BACKGROUND: The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education requires each residency program to have a Program Evaluation Committee (PEC) but does not specify how the PEC should be designed. We sought to develop a PEC that promotes resident leadership and provides actionable feedback. METHODS: Participants were residents and faculty in the Traditional Internal Medicine residency program at Yale School of Medicine (YSM). One resident and one faculty member facilitated a 1-h structured group discussion to obtain resident feedback on each rotation. PEC co-facilitators summarized the feed

Missed opportunities for early infant diagnosis of HIV in rural North-Central Nigeria: A cascade analysis from the INSPIRE MoMent study.

BACKGROUND: Early identification of HIV-infected infants for treatment is critical for survival. Efficient uptake of early infant diagnosis (EID) requires timely presentation of HIV-exposed infants, same-day sample collection, and prompt release of results. The MoMent (Mother Mentor) Nigeria study investigated the impact of structured peer support on EID presentation and maternal retention. This cascade analysis highlights missed opportunities for EID and infant treatment initiation during the study. METHODS: HIV-infected pregnant women and their infants were recruited at 20 rural Primary Hea

A two-state comparative implementation of peer-support intervention to link veterans to health-related services after incarceration: a study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 600,000 persons are released from prison annually in the United States. Relatively few receive sufficient re-entry services and are at risk for unemployment, homelessness, poverty, substance abuse relapse and recidivism. Persons leaving prison who have a mental illness and/or a substance use disorder are particularly challenged. This project aims to create a peer mentor program to extend the reach and effectiveness of reentry services provided by the Department of Veterans' Affairs (VA). We will implement a peer support for reentry veterans sequentially in two states.
