This study investigates changes with respect to increasing protein levels in dystrophic nerves of two mdx mouse models of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). We propose that these nerve changes result from progressive ongoing damage to neuromuscular junctions (NMJs) due to repeated intrinsic bouts of necrosis in dystrophic muscles. We compared sciatic nerves from classic mdx mice aged 13, 15 and 18 months (M), with D2.mdx mice (on DBA2 background) aged 9 and 13 M, using immunoblotting to quantify levels of 7 proteins. The neuronal proteins S100β and Tau5 were increased by 13 M in mdx nerves (co

Multiple nerve branches were created during the regeneration procedure after a nerve injury and such multiple branches are suggested to be used to control, for example, prosthesis with many degrees of freedom. Transected rat sciatic nerve stumps were inserted into a nine mm long silicone tube, which contained four, five mm long, smaller tubes, thus leaving a five mm gap for regenerating nerve fibers. Six weeks later, several new nerve structures were formed not only in the four smaller tubes, but also in the spaces in-between. The 7-9 new continuous nerve structures, which were isolated as ind

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic facial nerve palsy (Bell's palsy) is a very common condition that affects active population. Despite its generally benign course, a minority of patients can remain with permanent and severe sequelae, including facial palsy or dyskinesia. Hypoglossal to facial nerve anastomosis is rarely used to reinnervate the mimic muscle in these patients. In this paper, we present a case where a direct partial hypoglossal to facial nerve transfer was used to reinnervate the upper and lower face. We also discuss the indications of this procedure.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 53-year-old woman

We report a case of involuntary phonation caused by abnormal vocal cord movements during expiration in a patient with Parkinson's disease. A 60-year-old woman had been treated for parkinsonism at the outpatient clinic of the Department of Neurology since August 1999. She began to groan involuntarily in the daytime in September 2001. She could not eat well while groaning. Stridor was not noted during sleep at night. Endoscopic examination of the larynx revealed insufficient abduction of the bilateral vocal cords, although the glottis was not so small as to cause stridor during inspiration. Duri

Polysomnography, electromyography (EMG) of the face, tongue, and soft palate, blink reflexes (BRs), EMG during bottle-feeding, and brainstem auditory evoked responses (BAERs) were performed in 25 newborn babies with isolated Pierre Robin sequence (PRS) to aid in evaluation and management. Obstructive apneas were found in 23/24 patients (the 25th having undergone tracheotomy). Number and duration of central respiratory pauses were always normal, as well as electroencephalographic and clinical organization of sleep stages. EMG recruitment pattern in facial and lingual muscles, and BRs were norma

To clarify the pathophysiology of boule musculaire associated with cervical spondylosis, we investigated the 13 patients (11 males and 2 females) with cervical radiculopathy caused by cervical spondylosis. None of the patients had any subjective symptoms such as sensory disturbance, weakness in the boule musculaire, and muscle atrophy of the insurround region near the boule musculaire. Among 21 tendon reflexes of the biceps muscle of the arm, 9 were normal, 8 were decreased and 4 were increased. Among the 13 patients there was only 2 clinical cases of cervical myelopathy. MRI obtained from 3 p

Two experiments tested the widely held assumption that the cavernous nerves (CN) are essential not only to erection of the penile body, via the corpora cavernosa, but also to erection of the glans penis, via the corpus spongiosum. In Experiment 1, the copulatory behavior and reflexive erections of male rats were studied before and after the CN were transected bilaterally (n = 8), unilaterally (n = 6), or sham-operated (n = 6). In postoperative tests, bilaterally operated males were severely impaired in their attempts to effect intromission, and they had the expected deficits in reflexive erect

Adductor spastic dysphonia (SD) is a laryngeal dystonia characterized by a choked, constrained voice pattern with breaks in vocal flow. Treatment with a variety of therapies including speech and pharmacotherapy have minimal benefit; only one-third of patients undergoing recurrent laryngeal nerve section have benefitted at 3 years. We have used local injections of botulinum toxin (Botox) bilaterally into vocalis muscles in 42 patients with SD. Injections were through a teflon-coated hollow electromyography (EMG) recording needle. Unilateral small doses (2.5-3.75 U) were of no clinical benefit.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease characterized by degeneration of motor neurons, with the tongue often involved in clinical presentation. In this case, a 60-year-old female presented with progressive choking episodes and speech slurring over 9 months, exhibiting dysarthria, prominent tongue atrophy, fasciculations, and hyperreflexia. Needle electromyography (EMG) showed diffuse chronic neurogenic changes with signs of active denervation changes prominent on the tongue and right arm with normal sensory nerve studies. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain

Consistent explanations of hand and wrist anatomy, how it relates to function and leads to dysfunction, remain elusive. Recent research using new capabilities in computer-aided and three-dimensional (3D) modelling with mathematical tools have advanced our understanding in areas where conventional understanding does not align with clinical observation. Translating the complex biomechanical and clinical realities into mathematical models of the hand and upper limb, however, poses significant challenges; yet when successful, these models can provide answers to questions difficult to address in tw

Dropped head syndrome (DHS) is manifested as the inability to maintain the head in an upright posture. It has been associated with a wide spectrum of myopathies and neurological conditions. Isolated neck extensor myopathy (INEM) is one of many potential causes of DHS. This is a case report of a 72-year-old man who presented with degenerative cervical spondylosis and DHS for 2 years. He had previously failed to achieve a positive outcome to medication, cervical collar and exercise rehabilitation. However, he was able to regain his voluntary head control after a 4-month chiropractic program. It

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that almost exclusively involves motor neurons although autonomic dysfunction has also been reported. We present an 84-year-old female with no documented history of heart disease, who was admitted with negative T waves in the electrocardiogram precordial leads mimicking myocardial ischaemia. No other abnormalities were shown in the rest of the cardiologic evaluation, suggesting autonomic nervous system dysfunction. A neurophysiological study demonstrated acute and chronic denervation in multiple muscles with normal

We present the case of a 33-year-old woman with benign sporadic monomelic amyotrophy of the distal part of the arm, called Hirayama disease. Clinical features included forearm amyotrophy sparing the brachioradialis muscle, cold paresis and causalgia. Neck magnetic resonance imaging was normal in neutral and flexion position. Electromyography showed denervated patterns in the extensor digitorum communis, and conduction studies ruled out multifocal motor neuropathy. Motor evoked potentials were normal. Serum IgG anti-GM1 antibodies were moderately raised but were negative 8 months later. Outcome

A rare case of pseudohernia of the abdominal wall following video-assisted thoracoscopy (VAT) and pleural biopsy in a 61-year-old male is presented. The patient presented with a recurrent pleural effusion following fractured ribs after a road traffic accident. Computerised tomography (CT) showed thickened pleura, which was biopsied using VAT. Access to the pleural cavity was obtained with two laparoscopic ports inserted at the 8th intercostal space on the posterior chest wall. Following the procedure, the patient experienced sharp pain over the right hypochondrium, which was followed by the de

Toxin-L a lethal neuromuscular blocking agent was isolated from the venom of the scorpion, Lychas laevifrons (Pocock), by the CM-cellulose ion-exchange chromatography. It was a homogenous, thermolabile and low molecular weight protein. The toxin produced irreversible blockade of indirect stimulation induced twitch responses on innervated rat phrenic nerve-diaphragm and chick biventer cervicis preparation. The toxin did not produce any contractile response on toad rectus abdominis muscle preparation. On chronically denervated rat diaphragm, the toxin failed to alter the responses induced by dir

A patient with grade II spondylolisthesis and back pain underwent Harrington rod instrumentation. Postoperatively, he developed pain and numbness of the lateral aspect of the left foot and loss of the left AChilles reflex. Preoperative electrodiagnostic findings of the left lower extremity were normal. Two postoperative studies revealed that, concomitant with evidence of denervation if the left S1-supplied muscles, his sural sensory nerve action potential (SNAP) had been abolished but the superficial peroneal SNAP, recorded from the intermediate branch, was normal and equal to that of the cont

OBJECTIVE: Directly excited the denervated orbicularis oculi muscle (OOM) by electric current on rabbits, to induce efficient eyelid closure, and seek the optimal sites for such excitation that can produce efficient eyelid closure with the minimal excitating current in the least channel.
METHODS: Bilateral peripheral facial paralysis model on 20 healthy NewZealand rabbits (40 sides) were prepared. Exciting current was designed for two-way rectangular pulse, 35 Hz frequency and 0.2ms pulse width. The current intensity could be adjusted between 0 and 2.5 mA. Middle of upper-orbit (A), outer orb

When benzalkonium chloride solution (BACs) is locally applied, to the serosal surface of the intestine, it causes intrinsic denervation (ID) of the myenteric plexus (MP), changes intestinal morphology, and slows intestinal passage by prolonging small-bowel transit time. These effects of ID suggest that chemically-induced bowel denervation may be useful in the treatment of short-bowel syndrome (SBS). How ID affects intestinal morphology in rats with SBS has not previously been investigated. A 75%-80% mid-small-bowel resection was performed in 20 rats with mean body weight 247 +/- 30 g. The prox

Hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSPs) are genetic neurodegenerative diseases. HSPs are characterized by lower-extremity weakness and spasticity. However, there is no specific clinical treatment strategy to prevent or reverse nerve degeneration in HSPs. Mutations in receptor expression-enhancing protein 1 (REEP1) are well-recognized and relatively common causes of autosomal dominant HSPs. REEP1 modifies the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) shape, and is implicated in the ER stress response. Defects in the ER stress response seem to be crucial mechanisms underlying HSP neurodegeneration. Here, we repo
