Cost-Outcome of Radiotherapy for Local Control and Overall Survival Outcomes for Selected Cancers.

INTRODUCTION: Optimal radiotherapy (RT) use in cancer patients results in substantial 5-year local control (LC) and overall survival (OS) benefits at the population level. This study aimed to estimate the average per capita cost of the first course of RT treatment and the associated cost per LC and OS outcomes, both overall and by cancer stage. METHODS: Data on RT activities from 2017 to 2020 for lung, rectum, cervix, prostate, brain and head and neck (H&N) cancers were extracted from South-Western Sydney Local Health District electronic oncology information system MOSAIQ (Elekta, version 2.6

Incorporating Percutaneous Laser Ablation for Early Breast Cancer Treatment: A Systematic Review.

Objectives: We conducted a systematic review to compile the findings of all published studies on the use of percutaneous laser ablation (PLA) in the treatment of early-stage breast cancer. We aimed to identify appropriate methodology as well as parameters for the selection of suitable patients to optimize outcomes with the use of PLA. Additionally, we aimed to analyze whether this method is a viable alternative to current surgical treatments employed. Methods: The PRISMA 2020 method was applied. The terms "laser ablation" AND "breast cancer" were used to select all articles published up to Jan

Diagnostic performance of artificial intelligence in detecting bladder carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Accurate diagnosis and staging of bladder carcinoma (BC), particularly distinguishing muscle-invasive (MIBC) from non-muscle-invasive (NMIBC) forms, are critical for treatment planning. While imaging aids diagnosis, its accuracy depends heavily on clinician expertise. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers potential to enhance diagnostic precision, but its comparative performance against clinicians remains unclear. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies published up to February 2025 that compared AI-based diagnostic models with clinicians in detecting a

[Comment to the article "Clinical-pathological characterization of laryngeal cancer in the Mexican population"].

I read with interest the article by Castillo López et al. on the characterization of patients with laryngeal cancer. Although they highlight risk factors such as smoking, advanced age, and prolonged dysphonia, I believe it is important to include other risks, such as HPV16 infection and alcohol consumption, as reported in recent studies. I also point out the need to clarify the discrepancy regarding the impact of the duration of symptoms on cancer staging and progression, as mentioned in later publications by the same authors. Finally, I propose expanding the risk profile and strengthening ear

Long-Term Remission in Stage IIIb Melanoma After Surgical Resection Alone: An Uncommon Clinical Scenario.

Dear Editor, Melanoma is one of the most aggressive skin cancers, with rising global incidence (1). Prognosis is closely linked to the stage at diagnosis, with stage III, particularly cases involving lymph node metastases, carrying a high risk of relapse and mortality (2). Standard treatment includes wide local excision, sentinel lymph node biopsy, and systemic adjuvant therapy in metastatic cases (3). Despite these measures, five-year survival for stage IIIB melanoma remains significantly lower than for earlier stages (2). Herein, we report a rare case of stage IIIB melanoma with over ten yea

Lingual lymph nodes in tongue cancers: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Lingual lymph nodes (LLN) are aberrant nodes located in the floor of mouth. Neither are metastases to these nodes routinely investigated nor are they included in the guidelines for management of tongue cancers. This article systematically collates published literature along with a meta-analysis to address clinically relevant questions pertaining to the lingual nodes. A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Databases were searched to identify all articles on LLN in English until December 2024. A total of 24 articles were included. Proportional a

Pretreatment periodontitis is predictive of a poorer prognosis after esophagectomy for esophageal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Poor oral health is an independent risk factor for upper-aerodigestive tract cancers, including esophageal cancer. Several studies have investigated short-term outcomes after esophagectomy and the impact of periodontal disease, but few have examined the impact of periodontal disease on long-term outcomes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the rate of periodontitis among esophagectomy patients and the prognostic value of periodontitis and its effect on prognosis after esophagectomy. METHODS: A total of 508 patients who underwent esophagectomy received oral health care fr

[Cholangiocarcinomas].

The term cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) includes a group of malignant tumors that develop in the efferent bile ducts and are characterized by a high degree of heterogeneity. These differences between intrahepatic, perihilar and distal CCAs run through all aspects of the disease including the etiology, pathogenesis, symptoms, diagnostics and treatment. This review article presents the current developments in this field of diseases. We highlight surgical innovations in the clinical routine and the application of new systemic forms of treatment to augment the oncological radicality of surgery.

Late-stage diagnosis: The driving force behind high breast cancer mortality in Ethiopia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer continues to be the most common malignancy and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Ethiopia. The poor prognosis and high mortality rate of breast cancer patients in the country are largely caused by late-stage diagnosis. Hence, understanding the epidemiology of late-stage diagnosis is essential to address this important problem. However, previous reports in Ethiopia indicated inconsistent findings. Therefore, this literature review was conducted to generate dependable evidence by summarizing the prevalence and determinants of late-stage diagnosis among bre

[A Case of Laparoscopically Assisted Local Resection of Early-Stage Sigmoid Colon Cancer Arising within a Diverticulum].

The patient was a 79-year-old male in whom a neoplastic lesion was found in the sigmoid colon diverticulum during a follow-up colonoscopy for colorectal adenoma. Endoscopic treatment was difficult, and the patient was referred to our department for surgery. The patient had many underlying diseases, including angina pectoris, interstitial pneumonia, and diabetic nephropathy, and the decision was made to perform local resection as a minimally invasive treatment. The patient was treated with laparoscopic excision of the sigmoid colon, followed by a small laparotomy and intraoperative endoscopy to

Conditional survival of stage III non-seminoma testis cancer patients.

PURPOSE: In many primaries other than non-seminoma testis cancer, the risk of death due to cancer decreases with increasing disease-free interval duration after initial diagnosis and treatment. This effect is known as conditional survival and is relatively unexplored in stage III non-seminoma patients, where it may matter most in clinical decision-making. We examined the effect of disease-free interval duration on overall survival in stage III non-seminoma patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Within the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Database (2004-2018), stage III non-seminoma patie

Prognosis of Primary Papillary Ta Grade 3 Bladder Cancer in the Non-muscle-invasive Spectrum.

BACKGROUND: Ta grade 3 (G3) non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) is a relatively rare diagnosis with an ambiguous character owing to the presence of an aggressive G3 component together with the lower malignant potential of the Ta component. The European Association of Urology (EAU) NMIBC guidelines recently changed the risk stratification for Ta G3 from high risk to intermediate, high, or very high risk. However, prognostic studies on Ta G3 carcinomas are limited and inconclusive. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prognostic value of categorizing Ta G3 compared to Ta G2 and T1 G3 carcinomas.

Avascular spaces in radical hysterectomy.

The most common cancer in women worldwide is cervical cancer. For early-stage disease the standard treatment is radical hysterectomy. One of the main issues faced by surgeons performing a radical hysterectomy is the wide variation in the terminology used to define the procedure and the nomenclature used to describe the anatomical spaces critical to the success of the surgery. The aim of this review was to synthesize currently used anatomical landmarks with relation to surgical avascular spaces for the performance of radical hysterectomy.A computer-based comprehensive review of the MEDLINE, Coc

Tissue proteome analysis for profiling proteins associated with lymph node metastasis in gallbladder cancer.

Lymph node (LN) metastasis is the earliest sign of metastatic spread and an established predictor of poor outcome in gallbladder cancer (GBC). Patients with LN positive GBC have a significantly worse survival (median survival- 7 months) than patients with LN negative disease (median survival- ~ 23 months) in spite of standard treatment which includes extended surgery followed by chemotherapy, radiotherapy and targeted therapy. This study aims at understanding the underlying molecular processes associated with LN metastasis in GBC. Here, we used iTRAQ-based quantitative proteomic analysis using

Surgical Management of Advanced Glottic Cancer.

In advanced glottic cancer, it is widely known that definitive chemoradiation can result in comparable survival outcomes to primary surgery. This deserves consideration given the immense effects total laryngectomy (TL) has on patients. It is important to consider that not all advanced glottic tumors should be treated in the same way, and surgical management remains a critical consideration for optimization of local control and survival outcomes. Advances in organ preservation surgery and the more developed understanding of the survival benefits of TL in extensive T4 disease further support the

Techniques of staging laparoscopy and peritoneal fluid assessment in gastric cancer: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Staging laparoscopy for gastric cancer is recommended to assess the tumor's locoregional extension and exclude peritoneal disease. As there is no consensus on optimizing the procedure's diagnostic accuracy, we aimed to systematically review the literature on operative techniques, followed by peritoneal lavage fluid assessment in gastric cancer patients. Specifically, we sought to indicate the most common characteristics of the procedure and cytological evaluation. METHODS: This study was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses

The diagnostic accuracy and prognostic implication of pelvic and peritoneal fluid cytology specimens in ovarian clear cell carcinoma.

INTRODUCTION: Ovarian clear cell carcinoma (OCCC) is a rare subtype of ovarian epithelial carcinoma. Patients with low-stage disease have an excellent prognosis, while the prognosis for those with high-stage disease is poor. Neoplastic cells in abdominopelvic washings upstages the patient to at least FIGO 1C3. Positive cytology confers a worse prognosis when compared to similar stage patients with negative cytology. This study aims to investigate the diagnostic performance of abdominopelvic fluid cytology specimens in cases with pure OCCC and reaffirm the importance of accurate cytologic detec
