1. An examination was made of the mechanisms responsible for the inhibition of synaptic transmission through the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) of the rat following a single shock to the optic nerve.2. In the rat anaesthetized with paraldehyde we found no evidence that optic nerve stimulation produced any presynaptic inhibition in LGN. In agreement with other workers it was found that repetitive stimulation of visual cortex produced effects attributable to presynaptic inhibition. However, this was of small magnitude in the conditions of our experiments.3. Stimulation of the optic nerve elici

BACKGROUND: Functional neuroimaging studies have examined the neural substrates of treatments for major depressive disorder (MDD). Low sample size and methodological heterogeneity, however, undermine the generalizability of findings from individual studies. We conducted a meta-analysis to identify reliable neural changes resulting from different modes of treatment for MDD and compared them with each other and with reliable neural functional abnormalities observed in depressed versus control samples.
METHODS: We conducted a meta-analysis of studies reporting changes in brain activity (e.g., as

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the relationship between Pacinian corpuscle (PC) count on forefoot MRI in diabetic sensorimotor polyneuropathy (DSP) and large-fiber sensory dysfunction as quantified by nerve conduction studies (NCS).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-nine patients with type 2 diabetes and neurologically confirmed DSP (mean age 67.9 ± 13.5 years; 29 males) underwent forefoot MRI and NCS, including compound muscle and sensory nerve action potentials (cMAP, sNAP) and conduction velocities of tibial, peroneal, and sural nerves. PC counts were assessed in the subcutaneous and deep regions of

Introduction: Surgical decompression remains the gold standard for managing severe carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). However, perioperative pain and incomplete symptom resolution persist in some patients. Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), a neuroprotective antioxidant, has shown potential benefits in neuropathic conditions. This retrospective study evaluates the clinical and electrophysiological effects of ALA as an adjunctive therapy in CTS management. Methods: We retrospectively analysed 164 patients with electrodiagnostically confirmed CTS who underwent open surgical decompression. Patients were divided

BACKGROUND: Advanced cubital tunnel syndrome causes progressive sensory and motor dysfunction, leading to hand weakness, intrinsic muscle atrophy, and functional impairment. Although surgical decompression relieves mechanical compression, functional recovery in McGowan Stage 3 patients is often limited due to irreversible axonal degeneration and delayed reinnervation of distal muscles. Distal end-to-side anterior interosseous nerve transfer has therefore been proposed as an adjunct to decompression to enhance reinnervation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of this distal nerve

OBJECTIVES: To correlate the cross-sectional area (CSA) and elasticity of the median nerve (MN) measured at carpal tunnel inlet between healthy controls and various degrees of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) graded as per nerve conduction studies (NCS).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 53 patients (with 81 wrists) presenting with clinical symptoms characteristic of CTS, having their diagnosis confirmed and severity graded by NCS, and 48 healthy controls (with 96 wrists) were included in the study. All the study participants underwent wrist ultrasound which included initial Grey-scale USG follow

Many patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) suffer from excessive fatigue. To assess whether this fatigue might be related to changes in slow-conducting nerve fibers, we determined the conduction velocity distribution (CVD) in the median nerve. Thirteen fatigued but neurologically well-recovered GBS patients, 2 fatigued and stable CIDP patients, and 19 healthy controls participated in this study. Conventional maximal nerve conduction velocities (NCVs) did not show differences between GBS patients and healthy controls. However, i
