Migraine headache is triggered by and associated with a variety of hormonal, emotional, nutritional and physiological changes. The perception of migraine headache is formed when nociceptive signals originating in the meninges are conveyed to the somatosensory cortex through the trigeminal ganglion, medullary dorsal horn and thalamus. We propose that different migraine triggers activate a wide variety of brain areas that impinge on parasympathetic neurons innervating the meninges. According to this hypothesis, migraine triggers such as stress activate multiple hypothalamic, limbic and cortical

Studying communication between the gut and the brain is as relevant and exciting as it has been since Pavlov's discoveries a century ago. Although the efferent limb of this communication has witnessed significant advances, it is the afferent, or sensory, limb that has recently made for exciting news. It is now clear that signals from the gut are crucial for the control of appetite and the regulation of energy balance, glucose homeostasis, and more. Ghrelin, discovered just a few years ago, is the first gut hormone that increases appetite, and it may be involved in eating disorders. The stable

The thalamus is a critical component of the frontal cortical-basal ganglia-thalamic circuits that mediate motivation and emotional drive, planning and cognition for the development and expression of goal-directed behaviors. Each functional region of the frontal cortex is connected with specific areas of each basal ganglia (BG) structure and of the thalamus. In addition, the thalamus sends a massive, topographically organized projection directly to the striatum. Tract-tracing and physiological experiments have indicated a general topographic organization of the cortical-BG-thalamic loops and su

Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by bradykinesia, rigidity, postural instability, and resting tremor. Increasingly, Parkinson's disease has been associated with a broad spectrum of non-motor symptoms, such as olfactory loss, sleep disorders, autonomic dysfunction, cognitive impairment, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and apathy. In addition, a minority of Parkinson's disease patients develop compulsive behaviors while receiving dopamine-replacement therapy, including medication hoarding, pathological gambling, binge eating, hyperlibidinous behavior, compulsive

OBJECTIVE: It has been shown that finger circumference negatively correlates with sensory nerve action potential amplitude (SNAP-A). Also fat people have lower sensory nerve amplitudes. Factors that cause electrodes displaced further away from underlying nerves, such as increased cutaneous and subcutaneous tissue, will lower SNAP-A. This study was designed to evaluate correlation between skin thickness and SNAP amplitude.
METHODS: Thirty-seven healthy 22-40-year-old subjects were selected. Nineteen (51.4%) were males and 18 (48.6%) were females, without significant difference between males an

We report a patient with a hemorrhagic lesion encroaching upon the posterior third of the corpus callosum but sparing the splenium. She showed marked difficulties in recognizing objects and shapes perceived through her left hand, while she could appreciate elementary sensorial features of items tactually presented to the same hand flawlessly. This picture, corresponding to classical descriptions of unilateral associative tactile agnosia, was associated with finger agnosia of the left hand. This very unusual case report can be interpreted as an instance of disconnection syndrome, and allows a d

The term hippocampal sclerosis was originally used to describe a shrunken and hardened hippocampus, which histologically displayed neuronal loss and glial proliferation. These alterations are mainly located in the hilus of the dentate gyrus and in the CA1 and CA3 pyramidal cell layers but all hippocampal regions may show neuronal cell loss to varying degrees. A number of morphologic and cytochemical findings are associated with mesial temporal sclerosis, especially within the dentate gyrus. These changes include selective loss of inhibitory interneurons, abnormal sprouting of axons, reorganiza

We described a 16-month-old female patient who developed West syndrome at 3 months of age. MRI revealed a holoprosencephaly with incomplete fusion of the cerebrum, associated with central tegmental tract (CTT) lesions. At 1 year of age, the CTT lesion was still present on T2-weighted MRI. The CTT represents an important projection pathway of the extrapyramidal tract and the CTT lesions have rarely been reported using MRI in patients with neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy and several inborn errors of metabolism. Although the exact mechanism remains obscure, we suggest that disturbances i

The role of dopamine in the retina has been studied for the last 30 years and there is now increasing evidence that dopamine is used as a developmental signal in the embryonic retina. Dopamine is the main catecholamine found in the retina of most species, being synthesized from the L-amino acid tyrosine. Its effects are mediated by G protein coupled receptors constituting the D(1) (D(1) and D(5)) and D(2) (D(2), D(3) and D(4)) receptor subfamilies that can be coupled to adenylyl cyclase in opposite manners. Dopamine-mediated cyclic AMP (cAMP) accumulation, via D(1)-like receptors, is observed

The aim of the present study was to evaluate coherence measures at Theta through qEEG during the accomplishment of a specific motor task. The sample consisted of 23 healthy individuals, both sexes, with ages varying between 25 and 40 years old. All subjects were submitted to a specific motor task of catching sequences of falling balls. A three-way ANOVA was employed for the statistical analysis, which demonstrated main effects for the following factors: time, block and position. However, there was no interaction between the factors. A significant and generalized coherence reduction was observe

Facial threat conveys important information about imminent environmental danger. The rapid detection of this information is critical for survival and social interaction. However, due to technical and methodological difficulties, the spatiotemporal profile for facial threat processing is unknown. By utilizing magnetoencephalography (MEG), a brain-imaging technique with superb temporal resolution and fairly good spatial resolution, Synthetic Aperture Magnetometry (SAM), a recently developed source analysis technique, and a sliding window analysis, we identified the spatiotemporal development of

Probing undiscovered neurosubstances that play important roles in the regulation of cerebellar function is essential for the progress of our understanding of the cerebellum. New findings over the past decade have established that the cerebellum as well as other brain regions synthesizes steroids de novo from cholesterol through mechanisms at least partly independent of peripheral steroidogenic glands. Such steroids synthesized de novo in the brain are called neurosteroids. Recently the Purkinje cell, a cerebellar neuron, has been identified as a major site for neurosteroid formation in the bra

While abnormalities in head circumference in autism have been observed for decades, it is only recently that scientists have begun to focus in on the developmental origins of such a phenomenon. In this article we review past and present literature on abnormalities in head circumference, as well as recent developmental MRI studies of brain growth in this disorder. We hypothesize that brain growth abnormalities are greatest in frontal lobes, particularly affecting large neurons such as pyramidal cells, and speculate how this abnormality might affect neurofunctional circuitry in autism. The relat

Consistent with configural/conjunctive theories of the hippocampus, we report that rats trained on the non-linear transverse patterning discrimination problem (A+ versus B-, B+ versus C-, and C+ versus A) displayed retrograde amnesia when the hippocampus was later damaged. They also failed to relearn the solution to this problem. Damage to the hippocampus following training also produced retrograde amnesia in rats trained on a set of elemental discrimination problems (A+ versus B-, C+ versus D-, and E+ versus F-) that could be solved based on the associative strengths of the individual choice

The recognition that certain aspects of prefrontal function can be effectively modeled in rats has led to a slow expansion of interest in rat prefrontal cortex over the past decade. One of the most promising of these model systems is the orbitofrontal cortex of the rat. Rat orbitofrontal cortex is anatomically similar to the orbital prefrontal region in primates, and this similarity is borne out by behavioral and neurophysiological findings. Here we will present data on orbitofrontal cortex function from a number of parallel studies from our laboratories that employed single unit recording tec

At present the neurophysiology of Tourette's syndrome (TS) has been investigated largely from two perspectives; one for evaluation of the dysfunction of the cerebral cortex and the other for clarification of the neuronal mechanisms that underlie tics and related symptoms. For the former the following examinations have been conducted: quantitative analyses of scalp electroencephalography (EEG), premovement EEG potentials, contingent negative variation, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and neuroimaging studies, including echo-planar images and positron emission tomography scans. These explorat

The progressive, neurodegenerative process underlying idiopathic Parkinson's disease is associated with the formation of proteinaceous inclusion bodies that involve a few susceptible neuronal types of the human nervous system. In the lower brain stem, the process begins in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve and advances from there essentially upwards through susceptible regions of the medulla oblongata, pontine tegmentum, midbrain, and basal forebrain until it reaches the cerebral cortex. With time, multiple components of the autonomic, limbic, and motor systems become severely impair

Numerous mechanisms contribute to neural damage following central nervous system (CNS) injury. Inflammatory response has emerged as an important interaction between the CNS and the immune system in spinal cord injury that can have beneficial as well as detrimental consequences. This relationship has important implications for the development of therapeutic interventions for injuries and diseases of the spinal cord. This article details the innate and adaptive arms of the immune response, including cell-mediated and humoral pathways, and describes their relevance to the processes of degeneratio

Male zebra finches learn to sing during a restricted phase of juvenile development. Song learning is characterized by the progressive modification of unstable song vocalizations by juvenile birds during development, a process that leads to the production of stereotyped vocal patterns as birds reach adulthood. The medial magnocellular nucleus of the anterior neostriatum (mMAN) is a small cortical region that has been implicated in song behavior based on its neuronal projection to the High Vocal Center (HVC), a nucleus that is critical for adult vocal production and presumably also plays a role

Drug addiction, as a disease, has grown to reach the level of a social illness. Psychostimulants, opiates, alcohol, nicotine and cannabis abuse affects millions worldwide and virtually all classes of modern society. In spite of the enormous proportions of its spread, intimate neurobiological mechanisms leading to distintictive features of this pathological status, such as craving for the abused substance and loss of control over intake, remain largely obscure and pharmacotherapies sadly unsatisfactory. In the last decade, preclinical and clinical research in this field has made great progress
