Urate crystals deposition in the feet of overweight juveniles and those with symptomatic hyperuricemia: a dual-energy CT study.

BACKGROUND: The present study evaluated the clinical value of dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) for detecting urate crystals in juveniles with symptomatic hyperuricemia. METHODS: We recruited 24 juveniles (15 male and 9 female) who presented with symptomatic hyperuricemia. The mean body mass index (BMI) was 26.4 kg/m2 (standard deviation, SD 11.3 kg/m2). Fifteen juveniles (71.4%) were overweight. DECT scans of the feet were performed. For post-processing, a color-coding gout software protocol was used. RESULTS: Urate crystals deposition was observed in 21/24 (87.5%) juveniles with sympt…

Impact of obstructive sleep apnea on lung volumes and mechanical properties of the respiratory system in overweight and obese individuals.

BACKGROUND: Even through narrowing of the upper-airway plays an important role in the generation of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the peripheral airways is implicated in pre-obese and obese OSA patients, as a result of decreased lung volume and increased lung elastic recoil pressure, which, in turn, may aggravate upper-airway collapsibility. METHODS: A total of 263 male (n = 193) and female (n = 70) subjects who were obese to various degrees without a history of lung diseases and an expiratory flow limitation, but troubled with snoring or suspicion of OSA were included in this cross-sectiona

Prediction of liver injury using the BP-ANN model with metabolic parameters in overweight and obese Chinese subjects.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is often associated with dyslipidemia. Metabolic disequilibrium, resulting from being overweight and obesity, increases risk to cardiovascular system and chronic liver disease. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) are standard clinical markers for liver injury. In this study, we examined association of body mass index (BMI) and metabolic markers with serum ALT, AST and GGT activity in an overweight and obese Chinese population. A total of 421 overweight and obese Chinese adults (211 males …

Comparison between overweight due to pregnancy and due to added weight to simulate body mass distribution in pregnancy.

The assessment of biomechanical loading in the musculoskeletal system of the pregnant women is particularly interesting since they are subject to morphological, physiological and hormonal changes, which may lead to adaptations in gait. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of the increased mass in the trunk associated to pregnancy on the lower limb and pelvis, during walking, on temporal-distance parameters, joint range of motion and moments of force, by comparing a pregnant women group to a non-pregnant group, and to this group while carrying a 5 kg additional load located in th

Physical performance in relation to body composition and bone mineral density in healthy, overweight, and obese postmenopausal women.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Diminished physical performance can be detrimental among the older adults, causing falls and subsequent fractures, loss of independence, and increased morbidity and mortality rates. Therefore, it is important to maintain functional ability from the early onset of aging. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between physical performance measures and body composition (bone, fat, and lean mass) in healthy, overweight and obese, early postmenopausal white women. METHODS: A total of 97 participants aged 56.0 (4.4) years (mean (SD)) with body mass ind…

No difference between high-fructose and high-glucose diets on liver triacylglycerol or biochemistry in healthy overweight men.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Diets high in fructose have been proposed to contribute to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. We compared the effects of high-fructose and matched glucose intake on hepatic triacylglycerol (TAG) concentration and other liver parameters. DESIGN: In a double-blind study, we randomly assigned 32 healthy but centrally overweight men to groups that received either a high-fructose or high-glucose diet (25% energy). These diets were provided during an initial isocaloric period of 2 weeks, followed by a 6-week washout period, and then again during a hypercaloric 2-week period. The p…

A qualitative study of motivators and barriers to healthy eating in pregnancy for low-income, overweight, African-American mothers.

Poor diet quality is common among low-income, overweight, African-American mothers, placing them at high risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes. We sought to better understand the contextual factors that may influence low-income African-American mothers' diet quality during pregnancy. In 2011, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 21 overweight/obese, pregnant African Americans in Philadelphia, PA, all of whom received Medicaid and were eligible for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children. Two readers independently coded the interview transcripts to iden…

Elevated maternal lipids in early pregnancy are not associated with risk of intrapartum caesarean in overweight and obese nulliparous women.

BACKGROUND: Maternal overweight and obesity are associated with slower labour progress and increased caesarean delivery for failure to progress. Obesity is also associated with hyperlipidaemia and cholesterol inhibits myometrial contractility in vitro. Our aim was, among overweight and obese nulliparous women, to investigate 1. the role of early pregnancy serum cholesterol and 2. clinical risk factors associated with first stage caesarean for failure to progress at term. METHODS: Secondary data analysis from a prospective cohort of overweight/obese New Zealand and Australian nullipara recruit…
