Ginsenoside Rb1 From the Functional Food Panax ginseng Suppresses Pancreatic Cancer Progression via Macrophage Reprogramming Through the PI3K-AKT Pathway.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a highly malignant gastrointestinal tumor, and its nutritional intervention strategies remain rel … eng. This work is framed within the medicine-food homology (yao shi tong yuan) paradigm, an ancient philosophy holding that many edible plants possess both nutritional value and bioactive properties, which is increasingly recognized by modern nutritional science as a framework for developing evidence-based functional food ingredients. sUsing ultra-high perfo …

[Power of personal goal sharing--treatment plan using personal goal maps for patients with mental disorders].

A female patient in her sixties with schizophrenia had secretly disposed of all her medication and was not cooperating with hospital staff for about four months. During one of our consultations she mentioned that she wanted to be out of hospital by a certain date. That date happened to be her grandchild's birthday. It was at this point that she shared her goals with us, and voluntarily started having treatment. She was able to return home three months later, just in time to celebrate her grandchild's birthday with her family. A male patient in his sixties was able to leave the seclusion room a

Mapping the debate on the role of national ethics councils in democratic reasoning. A narrative literature review.

Developments in science and society are moving fast. Emerging technologies give rise to ethical questions about manipulability of life and the ethical limits of biomedical science. To foster legitimate and justified policymaking on bio-ethical issues, governments seek expert guidance from bioethics advisory bodies such as national ethics councils. This raises questions about how they fulfil their advisory role within the democratic context. In what way can national ethics councils best contribute to democratic reasoning and decision-making regarding complex bioethics issues? We performed a nar

Information avant la lettre: The mathematical constitution of brain waves in early EEG analysis (1929-1932).

This article examines the epistemological conditions under which the brain's electrophysiological trace was first constituted as a mathematical object of analysis. Rather than treating information as a cultural metaphor externally projected onto the brain, the paper reconstructs how specific tools of signal analysis made the trace into an object that the informational lineage would come to require. Hans Berger's research of 1929-1931 secured the trace as an effect of nervous processes in the brain, but read it as the signal of a single source. The case study is Günther Dietsch's 1932 paper, th

Can structural realism leave the comfort zone?

This essay critically examines the recent interpretation of the transition from phlogiston theory to contemporary chemistry developed through the lens of structural realism. This interpretation seeks to establish a correspondence between phlogistication/dephlogistication and reduction/oxidation processes, lending support to the preservation of structures amidst theory change. Here, we argue against the tenability of such a structuralist view on several grounds. First, we identify an ambiguity inherent to the parallelism between dephlogistication and oxidation. Second, we cast doubt on the gene

Patient's knowledge, doctor's ignorance: The production of knowledge about myalgic encephalomyelitis.

It is usually assumed that patient and doctor know strictly different things: the patient knows the phenomenological aspects of their illness, and the doctor knows its medical aspects. I present a case study, that of myalgic encephalomyelitis, wherein, due to severely dysfunctional institutional knowledge production and transmission mechanisms, the medical aspects of the illness are on the whole better understood by sick people than by their doctors. Indeed, lay scientists within the patient community disseminate and produce science on their disease, ensuring that patients as a whole have reli

Disclosure policies and the epistemic corruption of biomedical research.

Disclosure policies in biomedical journals require authors to disclose potential conflicts of interest (COI), typically -but not exclusively- originating in the industry funding they receive for their research. The consensus among philosophers and sociologists studying COI is that disclosure policies are not working. This failure has been interpretated by pharma scholars as a telling sign of the corruption of biomedical research. But how could have disclosure policies worked? Using Bicchieri's theory of social norms, we are going to argue that for disclosing to work in correcting the adverse e

Letter and landscape: early Soviet plant hunting in Transbaikalia and the relocations of Tibetan medicine between environments and epistemologies.

The early decades of Soviet rule saw dramatic developments in medicine and public health. Many regions of the new state, particularly the so-called 'national peripheries', underwent extensive health reform. Vernacular medical practices, which were often embedded in religious doctrines, were to be eradicated. Paradoxically, a keen interest in alternative medical knowledge also emerged, resulting in institutionalised research in ethnobotany and ethnopharmacology and recruiting heterodox practitioners as research partners. This article discusses how Buryat Tibetan medicine of Transbaikal Buddhist

Kant and the tradition of axiomatic chemistry.

In the Metaphysical Foundations of Natural Science, Kant famously argues that chemistry is not a proper science because chemistry does not allow for the application of mathematics. Although existing work on Kant and chemistry has greatly clarified many aspects of Kant's views on chemistry, a contextualized account of Kant's views on chemistry in relation to the chemistry books of his day is still a desideratum of Kant scholarship. In this article, I relate Kant's views on chemistry to the views of Stahl (1659-1734), Wiegleb (1732-1800), Erxleben (1744-1777), Weigel (1748-1831), Lavoisier (1743

Should we be testing pregnant patients' urine for drugs? An applied ethics approach.

Urine toxicology testing among birthing people in the United States remains a clinical practice often informed more by personal values and conscious and unconscious biases, than by medical evidence and ethical obligations. As empirical evidence addressing harms and benefits of toxicology testing in pregnancy grows, and national organizations are taking a moral stance around clinical practice, no published structure explicitly positions the evolving data within an ethical framework. We draw on a model of applied ethics to inform a set of concrete recommendations about what clinicians ought to d

What does it mean to predict earthquakes?

In the historical and philosophical literature regarding scientific prediction, what constitutes a prediction is often taken for granted. The debate on prediction is focused on its role and status in the scientific endeavor. In this paper I move in a different direction by problematizing the notion of scientific prediction. I do so by focusing on earthquake prediction, an exemplary case for studying the problem of scientific prediction. More specifically, I focus on a controversy around the so-called VAN method, a method proposed by three physicists as capable of short-term earthquake predicti

Towards functional precision medicine? Evidence standards of organoids as patient-specific models.

Evidence-based medicine (EBM), with meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials as its gold standard, has been criticized for failing to represent the individuality and variability of disease. Precision medicine (PM) has been proposed as an alternative to EBM's "averaging approach", leveraging genomic and other biological information at the individual level. However, PM is still an emerging and changing concept. It is unclear what constitutes acceptable evidence, when the number of patients with a specific condition approaches one. Despite large investments, PM´s overall capacity to predict an

Rethinking the trade-off hypothesis in evolutionary epidemiology.

The trade-off hypothesis plays a foundational role in the theoretical framework of modern evolutionary epidemiology, proposing that pathogen fitness is maximized at intermediate levels of virulence. Despite its influence on the study of host-pathogen interactions, the hypothesis has been criticized for its limited empirical support and the conceptual ambiguities surrounding the definition of virulence. This paper reassesses the scientific status of the trade-off hypothesis by interpreting the dependencies among epidemiological parameters as constitutive principles. Therefore, the results of th
