Ustekinumab-Induced Fatal Acute Heart Failure in a Young Female: A Case Report.

Data regarding short- and long-term cardiovascular complications of biological agents is lacking. Herein, the authors reported a case of abrupt onset of acute heart failure induced by ustekinumab treatment for resistant pityriasis rubra pilaris in a young healthy female with no past cardiac history. Although medical management was immediately initiated for cardiogenic shock, the patient passed away.

Erythema multiforme and Kawasaki disease associated with COVID-19 infection in children.

We read with interest the publications in the JEADV which reported dermatological manifestations associated with COVID‐19, such as pityriasis rosea, urticaria, rash, vascular signs, or chilblain‐like lesions. Herein, we report two life‐threatening cases of children presenting with fever and eruptions with mucous membrane involvement – erythema multiforme and Kawasaki disease – associated with COVID‐19.

Febrile ulceronecrotic Mucha-Habermann disease: a case report and review of the literature.

A 32-year-old male with febrile ulceronecrotic Mucha-Habermann disease (FUMHD) responsive to methotrexate is reported. This is a severe variant of pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta characterized by the acute onset of a widespread ulceronecrotic cutaneous eruption together with high fever and systemic involvement. To our knowledge, only 13 patients with FUMHD have been reported to date.

Sarcoidosis in a child, presenting as an erythroderma with keratotic spines and palmar pits.

A case of sarcoidosis with generalized erythroderma, exfoliation and micropapule formation in a 6-year-old boy is presented. Follicular spiny keratoses, resembling those seen in pityriasis rubra pilaris, and palmo-plantar pitting were among the other extraordinary features in this case. The epidermis overlying the widespread sarcoid granulomata showed parakeratosis, lymphocytic infiltration and degeneration of the basal layer.

Seborrhoeic dermatitis and napkin dermatitis.

Seborrhoeic dermatitis is described clinically and histologically with emphasis upon the vague definition of the disease. The relationship between pityriasis asteatosa and psoriasis is discussed. Napkin dermatitis is subdivided into infantile seborrhoeic dermatitis and true napkin dermatitis. The relationship between the former and psoriasis is unsettled. The role of microorganisms is stressed. Granuloma gluteale infantum is a condition caused by potent topical steroids and C. albicans.

Hidradenitis suppurativa following acanthosis nigricans. Report of two cases.

Two overweight male patients developed acanthosis nigrican of the axillae. Seven to nine months later, the patients developed hidradenitis suppurativa deep within the areas of acanthosis nigricans. On examination of biopsy specimens, the hyperkeratosis of acanthosis nigricans was found to extend into the follicles. In previous reports, Fox-Fordyce disease and pityriasis rubra pilaris have preceded the onset of hidradenitis suppurativa.

Inappropriate Use of Steroids in Superficial Dermatophytosis: An Uncommon Case of Erythroderma.

Erythroderma is a dermatological emergency presenting with generalized erythema and scaling involving <90% of the body surface.1 There are various causes of erythroderma, such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, phytophotodermatitis, pityriasis rubra pilaris, pemphigus foliaceus, cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, and drug eruptions.2 However, erythroderma induced by dermatophytosis is encountered rarely. We, here, describe a case of erythroderma developed secondary to extensive dermatophytosis.

Wong-Type Dermatomyositis: Literature Review of a Rare Variant.

Wong-type dermatomyositis (WTDM) was first formally discussed in the literature in 1969 by Dr. K.O. Wong. This rare variant of dermatomyositis (DM) is characterized by overlapping features of both classic DM and the cutaneous features of pityriasis rubra pilaris. Since 1969, few cases of WTDM have been published in the literature likely due to the rarity of this condition or lack of recognition by clinicians. This narrative review presents the current published English literature on WTDM, analyzing its clinical presentation, diagnostic testing, and treatments along with a comparison to classic…

Erythroderma: A clinicopathological study of 47 cases from 2018 to 2020.

Erythroderma, or exfoliative dermatitis, is an inflammatory disorder characterized by erythema and scaling, affecting most of the skin surface. It may be a result of many different causes such as previous dermatoses (psoriasis, eczema, atopic dermatitis [AD], pityriasis rubra pilaris, and pemphigus foliaceous), drug reactions, malignancies (mycosis fungoides [MF], Sézary syndrome, adult T cell leukemia/lymphoma), infections, and idiopathic disorders. Regardless of the etiology, the clinical appearance of erythroderma is similar in all patients. The most prominent physical examination findings …

Mycological Considerations in the Topical Treatment of Superficial Fungal Infections.

Trichophyton rubrum remains the most common pathogenic dermatophyte in the United States, Europe, and industrialized Asia, although other species are predminant elsewhere. Candida albicans is the most common pathogenic yeast, with other species occasionally encountered. Just a few of the 14 described species of Malassezia cause pityriasis versicolor worldwide. FDA approval does not always accurately reflect the potential utility of any given topical antifungal agent. Azole, hydroxypyridone, and allylamine agents are beneficial in the management of dermatophytosis; however, the allylamines may …

Common Skin Rashes in Children.

Because childhood rashes may be difficult to differentiate by appearance alone, it is important to consider the entire clinical presentation to help make the appropriate diagnosis. Considerations include the appearance and location of the rash; the clinical course; and associated symptoms, such as pruritus or fever. A fever is likely to occur with roseola, erythema infectiosum (fifth disease), and scarlet fever. Pruritus sometimes occurs with atopic dermatitis, pityriasis rosea, erythema infectiosum, molluscum contagiosum, and tinea infection. The key feature of roseola is a rash presenting af…

Phototherapy in pediatric patients: choosing the appropriate treatment option.

Phototherapeutic modalities, including narrowband-UVB, broadband-UVB, PUVA photochemotherapy, and excimer laser therapy are valuable tools that can be used for photoresponsive dermatoses in children. As a systematically safer alternative compared with internal agents, including the prebiologic and biological therapies, phototherapy should be considered a possible treatment option for children with diseases including psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, pityriasis lichenoides chronica, and vitiligo.
