Stress responsiveness in a wild primate predicts survival across an extreme El Niño drought.

We know more about the costs of chronic stress than the benefits of the acute stress response-an adaptive response that buffers organisms from life-threatening challenges. As yet, no primate study has empirically identified how the stress response adaptively affects evolutionary fitness. Here, we take advantage of a natural experiment-an El Niño drought-that produced unprecedented mortality for wild white-faced capuchins. Using a reaction norm approach, we provide evidence from primates that a more robust stress response to a challenge, measured using fecal glucocorticoids, predicts a greater …

Time-Dependent Material Properties and Composition of the Nonhuman Primate Uterine Layers Through Gestation.

The uterus is central to the establishment, maintenance, and delivery of a healthy pregnancy. Biomechanics is an important contributor to pregnancy success, and alterations to normal uterine biomechanical functions can contribute to an array of obstetric pathologies. Few studies have characterized the passive mechanical properties of the gravid human uterus, and ethical limitations have largely prevented the investigation of mid-gestation periods. To address this key knowledge gap, this study seeks to characterize the structural, compositional, and time-dependent micro-mechanical properties of

Hierarchical Temporal Processing in the Primate Thalamocortical System: Insights from Nonlinguistic Structured Stimuli.

The ability of the brain to process auditory information across multiple temporal scales is crucial for perception. This study introduces an innovative experimental approach using nonlinguistic structured stimuli composed of click trains that alternate at different rates to investigate auditory processing across 3 distinct temporal scales: individual clicks (tens of milliseconds), click trains forming auditory objects (hundreds of milliseconds), and higher-order click trains in neuronal novelty detection (seconds) in both rhesus monkeys and humans. Electrocorticography recordings in the audito

Unveiling BCO2 function in macular pigment metabolism: Mitochondrial processing and expression in the primate retina.

BCO2 (β-carotene oxygenase 2) converts carotenoids into apocarotenoids by oxidative cleavage across double bonds and controls carotenoid homeostasis in vertebrate tissues. In this study, we examined BCO2's expression, localization, and activity in human cell lines and the retina. We generated peptide antibodies directed against primate BCO2 and validated their specificity using recombinant BCO1 (β-carotene oxygenase 1) and BCO2 proteins expressed in bacteria. The antibodies specifically detected human BCO2 by Western blot. In BCO2 expressing HepG2 cells, the antibodies recognized a 65 kDa mito

Cell-type specific repertoire of responses to natural scenes in primate retinal ganglion cells.

At least 20 distinct retinal ganglion cell (RGC) types have been identified morphologically in the primate retina, but our understanding of the distinctive visual messages they send to various targets in the brain remains limited, particularly for naturalistic stimuli. Here, we use large-scale multi-electrode recordings to examine how multiple functionally distinct RGC types in the macaque retina respond to flashed natural images. Responses to white noise visual stimulation were used to functionally identify 936 RGCs of 12 types in three recordings. Each cell type was confirmed by the mosaic o

Evaluation of Risk Determinants and Molecular Characterisation for Non-Primate Hepacivirus Infection in Turkish Horses.

The genus Hepacivirus (HCV) has long been a dynamic group, increasing its number by myriads of species collectively referred to as non-primate hepaciviruses (NPHVs). NPHV exhibits a broad hepatotropism and is often attributed to chronic infection in horses and dogs. However, recent studies and meta-analyses on NPHV in horses have remained inconclusive regarding the determination of risk factors for infection. Therefore, our main goal was to investigate the frequencies and molecular characteristics of NPHV infection linked to geographical location, horse breeds, genders, and ages. For this purp

Early-life infection dynamics and genomic diversity of adenoviruses in a wild primate (Theropithecus gelada).

In humans, adenoviruses (AdVs) are frequently associated with respiratory illnesses, posing risks to children with developing immune systems and immunocompromised individuals. Outbreaks and epidemics are generally centred in close-contact settings, such as childcare facilities, and transmission occurs through faecal-oral and airborne pathways. AdVs have coevolved across the primate lineage, but very little is known about whether the early-life dynamics in non-human primates mirror those in humans. Here, we leverage longitudinal data collected on a population of geladas (Theropithecus gelada) i…

Magnetic resonance imaging of placental intralobule structure and function in a preclinical nonhuman primate model†.

Although the central role of adequate blood flow and oxygen delivery is known, the lack of optimized imaging modalities to study placental structure has impeded our understanding of its vascular function. Magnetic resonance imaging is increasingly being applied in this field, but gaps in knowledge remain, and further methodological developments are needed. In particular, the ability to distinguish maternal from fetal placental perfusion and the understanding of how individual placental lobules are functioning are lacking. The potential clinical benefits of developing noninvasive tools for the

Organizing space through saccades and fixations between primate posterior parietal cortex and hippocampus.

The primate posterior parietal cortex (PPC) withholds a unified representation of the visual space supporting visual exploration, while the hippocampus (HPC) provides a memory-based cognitive place map of the environment. To probe the interactions between these two representations, i.e. between view and place, we compared neural activity in the two regions of macaques navigating a virtual maze. We show that a large proportion of PPC neurons displayed spatial selectivity, along with the HPC. We hypothesized that such modulation by self-position might stem from visual cues processing through sac

Diffusion kurtosis MRI tracks gray matter myelin content in the primate cerebral cortex.

Diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) has been widely employed to model the trajectory of myelinated fiber bundles in white matter. Increasingly, dMRI is also used to assess local tissue properties throughout the brain. In the cerebral cortex, myelin content is a critical indicator of the maturation, regional variation, and disease related degeneration of gray matter tissue. Gray matter myelination can be measured and mapped using several non-diffusion MRI strategies; however, first order diffusion statistics such as fractional anisotropy (FA) show only weak spatial correlation with cort

Toward human uterus tissue engineering: Uterine decellularization in a non-human primate species.

INTRODUCTION: Uterus bioengineering offers a potential treatment option for women with uterine factor infertility and for mitigating the risk of uterine rupture associated with women with defective uterine tissue. Decellularized uterine tissue scaffolds proved promising in further in vivo experiments in rodent and domestic species animal models. Variations in the extracellular matrix composition among different species and adaptations of the decellularization protocols make it difficult to compare the results between studies. Therefore, we assessed if our earlier developed sodium deoxycholate-

Effect of mGluR2 and mGluR2/3 activators on parkinsonism in the MPTP-lesioned non-human primate.

We have previously discovered that the selective activation of metabotropic glutamate type 2 receptors (mGluR2) and concurrent stimulation of metabotropic glutamate types 2 and 3 receptors (mGluR2/3) enhance the anti-parkinsonian action of L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA). Here, we sought to determine the effects of the mGluR2/3 orthosteric agonists LY-354,740 and LY-404,039, as well as the effects of the mGluR2 positive allosteric modulators LY-487,379 and CBiPES on the range of movement, bradykinesia, posture and alertness as adjuncts to L-DOPA. Cellular and circuit remodeling of the primate foveal midget pathway after acute photoreceptor loss.

The retinal fovea in human and nonhuman primates is essential for high acuity and color vision. Within the fovea lies specialized circuitry in which signals from a single cone photoreceptor are largely conveyed to one ON and one OFF type midget bipolar cell (MBC), which in turn connect to a single ON or OFF midget ganglion cell (MGC), respectively. Restoring foveal vision requires not only photoreceptor replacement but also appropriate reconnection with surviving ON and OFF MBCs and MGCs. However, our current understanding of the effects of cone loss on the remaining foveal midget pathway is l…

Observations on the anatomy of the funiculus spermaticus and the testis in Brachyteles sp. (SPIX, 1823) primates - Atelidae.

BACKGROUND: Analysing the literature about the reproductive anatomy on New World Primates, one can see the need of standardisation on the description methods and, more importantly, the lack of detailed information. The problem is aggravated by the difficult access to specimens of the endangered species such as Brachyteles sp. This paper's objective was to extend knowledge on the male reproductive anatomy of these primates. The testis and funiculus spermaticus of Brachyteles are described in detail. METHODS: We utilised one individual of Brachyteles arachnoides, two hybrids (B. arachnoides × B…

Non-human primate models for understanding the impact of the microbiome on pregnancy and the female reproductive tract†.

The microbiome has been shown, or implicated to be involved, in multiple facets of human health and disease, including not only gastrointestinal health but also metabolism, immunity, and neurology. Although the predominant focus of microbiome research has been on the gut, other microbial communities such as the vaginal or cervical microbiome are likely involved in physiological homeostasis. Emerging studies also aim to understand the role of different microbial niches, such as the endometrial or placental microbial communities, on the physiology and pathophysiology of reproduction, including t

Allocentric information represented by self-referenced spatial coding in the primate medial temporal lobe.

For living organisms, the ability to acquire information regarding the external space around them is critical for future actions. While the information must be stored in an allocentric frame to facilitate its use in various spatial contexts, each case of use requires the information to be represented in a particular self-referenced frame. Previous studies have explored neural substrates responsible for the linkage between self-referenced and allocentric spatial representations based on findings in rodents. However, the behaviors of rodents are different from those of primates in several aspect…

The basal ganglia are a target for sensorimotor domains in posterior parietal, premotor, and motor cortex in primates.

Our research focused on defining and characterizing parieto-frontal circuits for specific actions in primates. Part of the posterior parietal cortex is divided into eight or more domains where electrical stimulation evokes a meaningful complex movement. Domains in the posterior parietal cortex compete with each other over excitatory connections that activate inhibitory neurons, while selectively activating functionally matched domains in the premotor cortex and motor cortex. Thus, the selection process involves competition and cooperation between domains over three different regions of cortex.…
