Generation of neural progenitor cells (NPCs) from pluripotent stem cells including ESCs and iPSCs and derivation of NPCs from somatic tissues have been considered promising approaches that could be used therapeutically to restore function in patients suffering neurodegenerative diseases. A new study published in Cell Research shows, for the first time, the generation of NPCs from somatic cells by small molecule compounds under hypoxia without exogenous transcription factors.

A 10-year-old castrated male Shih Tzu presented with severe generalized pruritus. Skin scrapings revealed the presence of Sarcoptes scabiei var. canis. A Yorkshire terrier in the same household simultaneously developed pruritus due to scabies. A series of arylhydrazino-substituted cyanoacrylates 3 and N-aryl pyrazolecarboxylates 6 were synthesized and their bioactivities were evaluated. Long-term success in obesity therapy is difficult to obtain, therefore drug therapy appears to be helpful. Until today, end-point studies for obesity drugs beyond the improvement of individual surrogate parameters are still missing. For all available drugs, medical treatment can be recommended only for a limited period of time due to the data of the studies and under consideration of side effects. Although a weight reduction leads to an improvement of cardiovascular risk factors and hence a reduction of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality should be expected, no study could prove it so far.

A 3-yr community-based study was conducted on residential properties on Mason's Island, Mystic, CT, to determine the efficacy of a rodent-targeted acaricide (fipronil) to control immature Ixodes scapularis (Say) on Peromyscus leucopus. Benzydamine (Tantum) was studied for ulcerogenic and ulcer protective effects in the rat gastric mucosa. Contrary to other non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs, i.e. acetylsalicylic acid and piroxicam, benzydamine was not ulcerogenic. The lack of ulcerogenicity might be explained by the fact that benzydamine does not inhibit the cyclooxygenase. Ulcer protective properties of benzydamine were observed against acetylsalicylic acid- and ethanol-induced gastric lesions. Vasoprotective mechanisms might be responsible for these effects.

The pyrazoloquinoline CGS 8216, a high-affinity ligand for benzodiazepine recognition sites, significantly reduced the consumption of a preferred 0.05% sodium saccharin solution in a 30 min two-bottle test. A highly significant effect was detected at 5.0 mg/kg, IP and at higher doses. The consumption of water and 0.6% saline, in two-bottle tests, or of quinine solution and water, in a forced-choice test, was not reliably affected by CGS 8216. The results point to a sensitive and selective intrinsic effect of CGS 8216 on ingestional responses in the rat.

Lonidamine alone or in combination with hyperthermic perfusion, with or without melphalan, was investigated in 12 patients with stage II, III, and IV malignant melanoma. The authors evaluated the most effective methods and sequence of Lonidamine administration. Preliminary results suggest that the highest effectiveness is obtained with the simultaneous administration of Lonidamine and hyperthermia.
