Association between the "seat belt sign" and intra-abdominal injury in children with blunt torso trauma.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the association between an abdominal "seat belt sign" (SBS) and intra-abdominal injury (IAI) in children presenting to the emergency department (ED) after blunt trauma. METHODS: The authors performed a prospective, observational study of children at risk for IAI who presented to a Level 1 trauma center following a motor vehicle collision (MVC) during a two-year period. Physical examination findings were recorded prior to abdominal imaging or surgery. The SBS was defined as an area of erythema, ecchymoses, and/or abrasions across the patient's abdominal wall resulting

Evaluating home-delivered meal service programs for obesity: a randomized controlled approach.

BACKGROUND: Though a healthy diet is the most effective solution for obesity, it is hindered by two main barriers: difficulty in accessing or preparing healthy meals and lack of portion control knowledge. OBJECTIVE: This study compared two different medical nutrition therapies (home-delivered diet meal service [HDMS] combined with dietary counseling and dietary counseling solely) in terms of anthropometric measurements, biochemical parameters and eating behaviors in women with overweight or obesity who participated in a weight loss program. DESIGN: A non-randomized, controlled, parallel-grou

A highly scalable deep learning language model for common risks prediction among psychiatric inpatients.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of studies exploring the performance of Transformers-based language models in common risks assessment among psychiatric inpatients. We aim to develop a scalable risk assessment model using multidimensional textualized data and test the stability, robustness, and benefit of this approach. METHODS: In this real-world cohort study, a deep learning language model was developed and validated using first hospitalized cases diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depressive disorder between January 2016 and March 2023 in three hospitals. The algorithm was exte

Associations Between Defence-Style, Eating Disorder Symptoms, and Quality of Life in Community Sample of Women: A Longitudinal Exploratory Study.

Background and Aim: Eating Disorders (EDs) impact an estimated 15% of the global population and are linked to maladaptive defence-styles (coping strategies) and poorer mental health outcomes. Defence-styles have been grouped into immature, neurotic, and mature behaviours. Studies have yet to examine all three defence-styles in ED symptomatic individuals over an extended period of time. The current study aimed to investigate using converse analysis the relationships between defence-style and ED outcomes over a 5-years period. Methods: Participants (n = 216, mean age 33 years) were recruited thr

A prospective study of high dose sedation for rapid tranquilisation of acute behavioural disturbance in an acute mental health unit.

BACKGROUND: Acute behavioural disturbance (ABD) is a common problem in psychiatry and both physical restraint and involuntary parenteral sedation are often required to control patients. Although guidelines are available, clinical practice is often guided by experience and there is little agreement on which drugs should be first-line treatment for rapid tranquilisation. This study aimed to investigate sedation for ABD in an acute mental healthcare unit, including the effectiveness and safety of high dose sedation. METHODS: A prospective study of parenteral sedation for ABD in mental health pat

Neurophysiological regulation and target-tissue impact of the pulsatile mode of growth hormone secretion in the human.

Neuroendocrine axes function as an ensemble of regulatory loci which communicate and maintain homeostasis via time-delayed blood-borne signals. The growth hormone (GH)-insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) feedback axis sustains a vividly pulsatile mode of interglandular signalling. Pulsatility is driven jointly by hypothalamic GH-releasing hormone (GHRH) and GH-releasing peptide (GHRP), and modulated by somatostatinergic restraint. Paradoxically, intermittent somatostatin inputs also facilitate somatotrope-cell responses to recurrent secretagogue stimuli, thereby amplifying pulsatile GH secret

Community-based Rehabilitation Intervention for people with Schizophrenia in Ethiopia (RISE): study protocol for a cluster randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Care for most people with schizophrenia is best delivered in the community and evidence-based guidelines recommend combining both medication and a psychosocial intervention, such as community-based rehabilitation. There is emerging evidence that community-based rehabilitation for schizophrenia is effective at reducing disability in middle-income country settings, yet there is no published evidence on the effectiveness in settings with fewer mental health resources. This paper describes the protocol of a study that aims to evaluate the effectiveness of community-based rehabilitation

[Preliminary pilot study of cyproterone acetate for the treatment of aggressive behavior associated with severe dementia].

INTRODUCTION: Behavioral symptoms are common in dementia, and seem to be more frequent in men than in women. Agitation is frequently responsible for caregiver burn-out and leads to institutionalization. The dramatic increase in the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease and related disorders requires better management of behavior symptoms. Although environmental adaptation has been proposed recently, for many years, psychoactive medications and physical restraints were the primary approach. However, in severely demented patients, both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments are inoperative.

Echinacea purpurea Protects Against Restraint Stress-Induced Immunosuppression in BALB/c Mice.

Echinacea purpurea has been widely used for the prevention and treatment of upper respiratory tract infections and the common cold. The restraint stress has been reported to suppress a broad spectrum of immune functions. The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effects of the pressed juice of E. purpurea (L.) Moench (EFLA®894; Echinacea) against restraint stress-induced immunosuppression in BALB/c mice. Echinacea significantly normalized the restraint stress-induced reduction in splenocyte proliferation and splenic natural killer (NK) cell activity (P < .05). Echinacea treatment

Chronic restraint stress decreases the repair potential from mesenchymal stem cells on liver injury by inhibiting TGF-β1 generation.

Chronic psychological stress has been demonstrated to play an important role in several severe diseases, but whether it affects disease therapy or not remains unclear. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been demonstrated to have therapeutic potentials in treating tissue injury based on their multidifferentiation potential toward various cell types. We investigated the effect of chronic restraint stress on therapeutic potential of MSCs on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver injury in mice. CCl4-induced mice were injected with enhanced green fluorescent protein-MSCs, which was followed by

Sex, drugs, and adult neurogenesis: sex-dependent effects of escalating adolescent cannabinoid exposure on adult hippocampal neurogenesis, stress reactivity, and amphetamine sensitization.

Cannabinoid exposure during adolescence has adverse effects on neuroplasticity, emotional behavior, cognition, and reward sensitivity in adult rats. We investigated whether escalating doses of the cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1 R) agonist, HU-210, in adolescence would affect adult hippocampal neurogenesis and behavioral processes putatively modulated by hippocampal neurogenesis, in adult male and female Sprague-Dawley rats. Escalating doses of HU-210 (25, 50, and 100 µg/kg), or vehicle were administered from postnatal day (PND) 35 to 46. Animals were left undisturbed until PND 70, when they were

AdipoRon ameliorates anxiety- and depression-like behaviors in chronic restraint-stressed mice via AMPK-PPARα-BDNF-TrkB signaling.

Depression is a major global health burden, and current treatments are limited by delayed onset and incomplete efficacy, highlighting the need for novel, mechanism-based therapies. Chronic restraint stress (CRS) induces behavioral, hormonal, and synaptic changes relevant to depression, but the role of adiponectin signaling remains unclear. Here, we examined whether the adiponectin receptor agonist AdipoRon exerts antidepressant-like effects via brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)/tropomyosin receptor kinase B (TrkB) signaling in mice subjected to 14 days of CRS. CRS produced anxiety- and

Agmatine Reverses Sub-chronic Stress induced Nod-like Receptor Protein 3 (NLRP3) Activation and Cytokine Response in Rats.

The activation of Nod-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) has lately been implicated in stress and depression as an initiator mechanism required for the production of interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-18. Agmatine, an endogenous polyamine widely distributed in mammalian brain, is a novel neurotransmitter/neuromodulator, with antistress, anxiolytic and antidepressant-like effects. In this study, we examined the effect of exogenously administered agmatine on NLRP3 inflammasome pathway/cytokine responses in rats exposed to restraint stress for 7 days. The rats were divided into three groups: stress, stress+

Fluvoxamine increased glutamate release by activating both 5-HT(3) and sigma-1 receptors in prelimbic cortex of chronic restraint stress C57BL/6 mice.

Emerging evidence from therapeutic trials in humans and animal models suggests that in the treatment of depression, antidepressants play a role by targeting the glutamatergic system. Fluvoxamine is one of the widely used SSRIs which has been considered to target monoamine neurotransmitter reuptake mechanisms. However, whether fluvoxamine has an effect on the glutamate release is still unclear. The present experiment studied the effect of fluvoxamine on presynaptic glutamate release in prelimbic cortex, both in control C57BL/6 mice and chronic restraint stress C57BL/6 mice, and further investig

Early life stress enhances behavioral vulnerability to stress through the activation of REST4-mediated gene transcription in the medial prefrontal cortex of rodents.

There is growing evidence suggesting that early life events have long-term effects on the neuroendocrine and behavioral developments of rodents. However, little is known about the involvement of early life events in the susceptibility to subsequent stress exposure during adulthood. The present study characterized the effect of maternal separation, an animal model of early life adversity, on the behavioral response to repeated restraint stress in adult rats and investigated the molecular mechanism underlying behavioral vulnerability to chronic stress induced by the maternal separation. Rat pups

Glucocorticoid receptor and mitogen-activated protein kinase activity after restraint stress and acoustic trauma.

Restraint stress (RS) protects auditory function against acoustic trauma by activating glucocorticoid receptors (GR) in the cochlea. In a search for the signaling pathways downstream to GR that may be involved in RS-induced protection we report here (1) a downregulation of phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1 and 2 (pERK 1/2) after the combined treatment of RS and acoustic trauma; (2) activation of phospho-p38 in the auditory nerve after RS; (3) the abolition of these two effects by pretreatment with metyrapone (an inhibitor of corticosterone synthesis) and RU486 (a GR antag
