[A small-mammal study in the northeastern Kara Kum for leptospirosis infectivity].

Search for natural foci of leptospirosis was carried out in 1987-1989 in humid biotopes of Tashauz Province, Turkmenistan. Such potential carriers of leptospirosis as house mice (Mus musculus) and tamarisk gerbils (Meriones tamariscinus) are widely spread in this area, and the size of their population can amount to great numbers. The sharpest fluctuations in the population size are characteristic of house mice inhabiting the shores of water collecting ponds and lakes in the regions of minimally used pastures. A moderate number of house mice was registered in spring and autumn at the area of ir

[Ecological aspects of American tegumentary leishmaniasis: 8. Evaluation of the enzootic activity of Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis, in forest and peridomiciliary environments of the Ribeira Valley region, São Paulo State, Brazil].

The evidence of mucocutaneous leishmaniasis transmission in the non-forest environment in the Ribeira Valley region, São Paulo, Brazil, has made this epidemiologic four years' study possible, viewing the enzootic activity of L. (V.) braziliensis. Furthermore, the natural infection in small mammals and the domestic dog population has been completed in collecting of phlebotomine sandflies in the forest and peridomiciliar environments. Positive test-results have only been found in resident dogs (Canis familiaris) with a rate of 5.6 and 2.4% for serological and parasitological test respectively. A

[The Auvergnan focus of alveolar echinococcosis. Research on the intermediate host, description of the lesions].

Echinococcus multilocularis larvae occurred in 23 (2.44%) of the 943 adult vole rats (Arvicola terrestris scherman Shaw, Mammal Microtidae) collected in the mountanous center of France (Massif Central, departments of Puy-de-Dôme and Cantal, province of Auvergne) and obtained from August 1981 to Aug. 1982 in seven different localities. According to this localities, the average percentage of parasitized voles changes from zero to 4.65%; according to the month of the year, these percentages change from 0.6 to 3.6 in the active sites while unusual peaks can be reached (17.5 in January in the Allan

Spontaneous obesity and weight loss: insulin binding and lipogenesis in the dormouse.

Obese dormice (Glis glis) become anorexic during the weight loss phase of the 2-mo (infradian) body weight cycle. We have shown previously that this phase is characterized by severe insulin resistance, manifested by impaired insulin-stimulated glucose utilization in isolated adipocytes. Contrary to other obesity models, the insulin resistance was not accompanied by hyperinsulinism. In the present study, impaired lipogenesis was associated with decreased maximal insulin-binding capacity (due to a reduction in receptor concentration) and a postreceptor defect, which were exacerbated rather than

[Detection of the tularemia zoonosis in the territory of the Kartlian Plain].

The natural focus of tularemia was found to cover the whole territory of the Kartlian plain. Epizooty occurred mainly among common voles with the involvement of insectivorous voles. Hard ticks, gamasids and fleas infected with Francisella tularensis were detected. Rodents highly sensitive to tularemia can be affected by this infection. Water rats were not involved into the enzootic process. Further studies are necessary for the final solution of this problem.

Leptospirosis in rodents from an arid environment.

Rodents (n = 358) were trapped from 6 locations in Arizona, including 2 dairies, 2 swine raising operations, and 2 areas where domestic animal access was limited. Isolates of Leptospira interrogans serovar ballum were obtained from 3 house mice (Mus musculus) trapped in dairies. Leptospira were seen in silver-stained kidney sections of 10.4% of the rodents. The usefulness of serologic data in detecting leptospiral infection in these rodents was uncertain because so few animals yielded isolates that valid comparisons of culture positives to serologic positives were not possible. Titers greater

Ecology of plague in Africa: response of indigenous wild rodents to experimental plague infection.

The Mastomys natalensis species complex, subdivided into genetically distinct species having diploid chromosome numbers 2n = 32 and 2n = 36, is a reservoir for several zoonoses including Lassa fever and plague. This report describes a study to determine whether these sibling species and three other rodent species have different potential as reservoirs for plague. It was found that M. natalensis (2n = 32) was significantly more resistant to experimental plague infection (50% survived inoculation with 120 000 Yersinia pseudotuberculosis subsp. pestis) than was M. coucha (2n = 36) (none of which

Glycosylated hemoglobin in Mystromys albicaudatus: a diabetic animal model.

Glycosylated hemoglobin was measured in Mystromys albicaudatus, a rodent model of diabetes mellitus, using a newly developed colorimetric assay. The mean glycosylated hemoglobin for non-diabetic Mystromys (n = 321) was 14.8 nmol hydroxymethylfurfural / 10 mg hemoglobin which is similar to that obtained in non-diabetic humans. Animals with a glycosylated hemoglobin value greater than 19 nmol hydroxymethylfurfural / 10 mg hemoglobin were characterized as diabetics. Significant correlations were found between glycosylated hemoglobin and both plasma glucose and urine glucose levels.

The hormonal control of implantation.

The hormonal control of implantation in mammalian species with and without embryonic diapause is described. In a majority of species displaying the obligate form of diapause the corpora lutea appear to exhibit a low level of steroidogenic activity throughout diapause, full luteal activity being resumed just before the initiation of implantation. Fluctuations in the plasma levels of oestrogen and progesterone during diapause may serve to prime the uterus for implantation. In species exhibiting the facultative form of diapause, such as the rat and mouse, both progesterone and nidatory oestrogen

Seasonal variation in the morphology of thyroid parafollicular (C) cells in the woodchuck, Marmota monax: a light and electron microscopic study.

The morphology of parafollicular (C) cells in the thyroid gland of the woodchuck, Marmota monax, was studied during the four seasons of the year. The spring C cells are characterized by a large Golgi zone, rough-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum, free ribosomes and relatively few dense granules. In the summer these cells appear to be larger and many are packed with dense granules. Fall cells exhibit morphological characteristics suggestive of intense synthetic activity, having rough-surfaced endoplasmic reticulum in whorls or parallel arrangement, a large Golgi apparatus and few, to many granules

Monkeypox and whitepox viruses in West and Central Africa.

Prospects for the eradication of smallpox are now highly encouraging. With the cessation of man-to-man transmission, the question of possible animal reservoirs of smallpox becomes increasingly important. During the period 1970-1975, 20 cases of a smallpox-like disease were detected in smallpox-free areas of tropical rain forest in West and Central Africa. Epidemiological and virological investigations revealed that the disease was caused by an animal poxvirus termed monkeypox virus, a member of the orthopox virus group. The disease spread with difficulty even among susceptible close contacts a

Rodent leptospirosis in Colorado.

A study was conducted to evaluate leptospirosis in brown rats (Rattus norvegicus), muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus) and mice (Mus musculus) in southeastern Larimer County, Colorado. Leptospira serotype icterohaemorrhagiae was isolated from fourteen of 143 feral brown rats, an infection rate of 9.8%. Serological evidence of infection with this stereotype was found in 66.4% of the rats. Serological evidence of L. serotype ballum infection was present in three of 17 muskrats. Leptospires were seen in histological sections of kidney tissue from two of 61 feral mice. No isolations were made from cultu

Evidence of SARS-CoV-2 Exposure in Rodents from Rural Localities in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico.

Zoonotic diseases involve pathogen transmission between humans and animals, with most research focused on animal-to-human spillover. However, reverse zoonosis-the transmission of pathogens from humans to animals-remains understudied despite its potential ecological and epidemiological consequences. The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic highlights this risk, as human-associated viruses may sporadically infect wildlife species and generate novel exposure pathways. To assess evidence of SARS-CoV-2 exposure in wildlife, we analyzed serum and rectal swab samples from rodents collected in rural localities of the

Phylogenetic and histopathological characterization of putative Hepatozoon ophisauri-like lineages in rodents from Italy.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to describe the occurrence and phylogenetic diversity of Hepatozoon spp. in small mammals from the Emilia-Romagna region, northern Italy, and to assess their genetic relationships with previously described lineages. METHODS: Tissue samples (spleen and ear) from wild animals belonging to eight small mammal species were examined. Molecular screening was performed using PCR targeting the 18 S rRNA gene of Hepatozoon spp. Positive amplicons were sequenced and analyzed using phylogenetic methods to determine their taxonomic placement, and one positive fresh sampl
